The challenge:

"Show us photos that represent a lifelong connection to structures that will stand the test of time, evoke what it means to endure, to be indestructible, or to last forever."

This old seawall was part of the old bridge across Tampa Bay. It was hit by a ship and collapsed in 1980. The new bridge starts here as well but is virtually indestructible.

Here is a link to the story with pictures of the event from forty years ago. (www.tampabay.com/photos/2018/05/09/the-sunshine-skyway-br...). These days this sea wall and the remnants of the old bridge are used for recreation and fishing.

I took this photo about three years ago. However, lately, there is an on-going project to re-enforce the seawall so that it doesn't erode. Because I drive by it several times a week, I was getting tired of seeing the construction equipment. But upon reflection, and through a longer lens of history, it's probably good that they take all the time they need to get it right.

Taken in 1963, these are our German shepherds, Romair and Amber, taking life easy in our 1949 Plymouth. We set up the back seat area with a platform so the dogs would have more room, and, weather permitting, we left the door open so they could hop in and out at will. As you can see, they were right at home in there.

Aside from serving as a dog house, it also served as our main means of transportation for a year or so, and even after we got a couple of newer cars, we kept it because it proved to be just about indestructible. And besides, the dogs would never forgive us if we ever got rid of it. As I recall, we paid $25 for the Plymouth.

I hate my body

My heart is too weak

My bones are too brittle

My skin is too thin

So let me do something to change that

I need a cover

Something that protects me

A shell in which I can grow

In which I get stronger

Or become something else…

Something I was always supposed to be

An indestructible, annoying, disgusting beast

It's sad to see these old rural barns and buildings crumbling under the weight of time and neglect. It would be interesting to see the magnificent barn that was built on that nearly indestructible stone foundation behind this dilapidated old hay barn; I bet it was magnificent. The only thing still standing strong is the more modern concrete silo.

Entrance to Killer's Indestructible Bunker.

The moat of the former Thetford Castle, a medieval motte and bailey castle on Castle Lane in Thetford, Norfolk.

The first castle in Thetford, a probable 11th century Norman ringwork called Red Castle, was replaced in the 12th century by a much larger motte and bailey castle on the other side of the town. This new castle was largely destroyed in 1173 by Henry II, although the huge motte, the second largest man-made mound in England, remained intact.

The first castle on the Thetford site was Red Castle and was probably built shortly after the Norman conquest by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey.

By 1100, the town of Thetford was controlled by Roger Bigod, the Earl of Norfolk. Roger Bigod decided to build a new motte and bailey castle. The castle was constructed by hand, using workers digging with wooden shovels, and probably without pickaxes. It is estimated that the motte would have taken around 24,000 man days of effort to build.

The Bigod family continued to build their grip on the region, taking advantage of their powerful castles at Thetford, Framlingham, Bungay, and Walton. Roger's son, Hugh Bigod, played a prominent role during the civil war years of the Anarchy, rebelling against King Stephen from his strongholds in East Anglia. It appears likely that a stone wall had been built around the bailey around this time, and recent work has speculated that a stone keep was also erected on the site. At the end of the war, Henry II took the throne and attempted to restore royal power across the region. In 1157, Henry seized Bigod's castles; he ultimately returned Framlingham and Bungay but retained Thetford Castle for his own use. Hugh Bigod then joined the revolt by Henry's sons, seizing the castle, but in 1173 Henry's forces captured the castle and destroyed the fortifications. The mound, however, proved effectively indestructible.

Thetford declined after the 12th century, and the castle rapidly became disused, although as late as 1558, the Castle Yard was in use and still said to have been surrounded with a stone wall.

Local medieval tradition suggested that the mound had been made by the devil, after he completed the dykes at Narborough and Newmarket. Other traditions claimed that the mound covered a palace filled with treasure, or six silver bells from Thetford Priory.

6 December 2018 news was given of the killing of the Elisio bear, a Friulian bear monitored by the University of Udine (Italy), and killed in Slovenia by a hunter at the end of November.

He had swum across Lake Cavazzo several times. He had crossed the Trieste-Ljubljana motorway. He had ended up under a train in Tolmin, but survived. Born in Slovenia, he trespassed here and there. Also captured with the help of a Friulian hunter who gave him his name, his movements were reported to the Slovenian authorities, to warn hunters not to kill him.

No way. Shooting everything that moves, just to fill your belly, sell trophies, or boast with your friends, I don't know, is stronger than everything. Culture of the hunter man who kills and destroys, an indestructible thousand-year-old culture that will leave us all orphans.

Hi Elisio, your name didn't bring you luck.

Aveva attraversato l'autostrada Trieste-Lubiana. Era finito sotto un treno a Tolmino, comunque sopravvivendo. Nato in Slovenia, sconfinava qua e là.

Pompon left us on Valentine's Day.

She just peacefully fell asleep for the last time... after 2.5 years of a quiet, happy life.

It was such a beautiful, perfect way to go.

She just sweetly fall asleep in her Orange Maisonette. On Valentne's Day - just imagine...

Pompon remained perfectly lively til her final day. The night before it happened, she had her last supper in her usual manner, full of appetite and sprightly and showing no signs it would be her last meal...

At some point, I almost began to believe she'd stay here forever.

She just somehow always managed to fight every single health problem, and, I'm ashamed to admit, som many times I was pretty sure wouldn't make it, she was so tiny and so frail... But she seemed indestructible! Such heroic little girl. I wish every hamster was as strong as Pompon.

Eventually, she only had problems with her eyes.

That's why I stopped taking her pics... I didn't want torture her.

Pompon was a very odd little girl.

Or, a little tomboy.

She never liked company, she was extremely shy, a misanthrope. She used to play only at night, ran in her stationary ball only in the dark.

Most of all, she loved her Orange Maisonette.

Oh, and fresh sunflower bread. It was the love of her life.

All in all, she had a very peaceful life, I tried not to disturb her too much, especially during last year.

The luckiest of my hams... ;)

Pompon was actually from my first generation of hamsters.

She knew Chmurka and Szarotka, so her passing kind of marks the end of an era.

There's only poor pink Piórko left now...

We will miss you, dearest Pomponik...

Play in Peace in heaven

Character Creation

The Shade (Richard Swift) is a comic book character developed in the 1940s for National Comics, first appearing in the pages of Flash Comics in a story titled "The Man Who Commanded the Night", scripted by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Hal Sharp.

Debuting as a villain, the Shade was best known for fighting against two generations of superheroes, most notably the Golden Age and Silver Age versions of the Flash.

He eventually became a mentor for Jack Knight, the son of the Golden Age Starman, Ted Knight, a hero the Shade had also fought.

Though portrayed in Silver Age comics as a thief with a cane that could manipulate shadows, the character was reinvented in 1994 as a morally ambiguous Victorian-era immortal who gained the ability to manipulate shadows and immortality from an unexplained mystical event.

In 2009, the Shade was ranked as IGN's 89th-greatest villain of all time.

The Shade appeared as a major character from the season 1 finale onwards in Stargirl, played by Jonathan Cake

Publication history

The Shade first appeared in Flash Comics #33 (September 1942), and was created by Gardner Fox and Harold Sharp.

Shade received a solo series in late 2011, written by Robinson and drawn by Cully Hamner, Darwyn Cooke, Javier Pulido, and others. It deals with Shade and his descendants, flashing back to various points in his life as he travels the globe trying to find who is behind a plot to kill him.

Fictional Character History

Origin

Born and raised in London, England in the early 1800s, Richard Swift was a wealthy importer. In the course of his business he came into contact with Simon Culp, who hired Swift to import a lion for him. The pair became friends while awaiting the arrival of the lion. It was soon revealed that Culp was merely using Swift in an effort to enact an arcane ritual; he captured Swift and attempted to use him as a sacrifice to the goddess Scathach. However, for reasons unknown, Swift was gifted with the powers that Culp had intended only for himself. The resultant mystical occurrence resulted in the deaths of over a hundred people. Bereft of all memories of who he had been, Swift departed his old life and was reborn as the Shade. Immediately after the events that gave him his powers, the disoriented Shade was taken in by Piers Ludlow, who attempted to take advantage of Shade's state by framing him for murder. Shade lashed out instinctively with his powers, making an enemy of the Ludlow family when he killed almost the entire family. Following this he embarked on a career of questionable legality, exploring the world and occasionally taking work as an assassin.

Golden Age

In his original Golden Age appearances, the Shade was portrayed as a villainous character. Primarily a thief, he utilized a cane that allowed him to manipulate shadows. He retained this characterization throughout the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages.

Modern Age

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Shade remained a villain for a few more years. Following Zero Hour his character was significantly rewritten. He was re-imagined as an immortal of Victorian extraction, and given a more morally ambiguous, anti-heroic bent. Much of his previous villainy was retconned as the influence of Culp. This version of the character no longer needed the magical cane to manipulate shadows, this trait became inherent.

Rebirth

Following the universal reboot, the powers of the Darklands, previously only semi-sentient, became fully sentient and autonomous. Shade himself became significantly less competent.

Flash of Two Worlds

Working with the Fiddler and the Thinker, Shade takes part in shifting Keystone City out of phase, trapping the inhabitants and causing the rest of the world to forget the city ever existed. They use this power to loot the city with impunity. They are confronted by both Jay Garrick and Barry Allen, and the heroes eventually defeat the Shade and his companions.

Starman

Shade first comes into contact with Starman when he abducts the hero's father, Ted Knight, at the behest of Mist. He soon turns against Mist and sides with Starman, later forming close ties with the O'Dare family, particularly Matt O'Dare. During their association Shade frequently engages in heroic behaviour to assist Jack and Matt. At one point he agrees to selflessly sell his soul to save those trapped in a cursed poster. Around this time he makes an enemy of Neron by refusing to accept the demon's deal to increase his own power. During the events of the Godwave his powers are completely unaffected by the event that depowered most powered individuals. Slowly but surely Culp is able to take control of Shade's body, culminating in an attempt to destroy Opal City, carried out with the sole intention of destroying the city that Shade loves. Joining Culp's efforts are Neron, one of the last remaining Ludlows, and Mist's daughter. Shade is able to expel Culp, but in so doing loses his powers. Despite this, he is able to use a shadow demon to engage in a battle of wills with Culp, which he ultimately wins. Stripping Culp of his powers and adding them to his own, Shade is victorious.

Infinite Crisis

Still in Opal City and acting as the city's heroic, if cynical, protector, Shade spends the Crisis defending the city and its inhabitants.

Cry For Justice

Shade tells Jay Garrick of Prometheus' plan to distract the heroes from his master plan, and travels with the hero to the Watchtower. There, they encounter Prometheus, who is attempting to flee the ship. As he is not a hero, Prometheus has no file on how to defeat Shade, and is confounded by how to deal with him. Donna Troy takes the opportunity to attack Prometheus and beats him nearly to death. Shade prevents her from killing the villain. He later aids Green Arrow in travelling to Prometheus' lair, where Green Arrow kills the villain.

Blackest Night

Now in a relationship with Hope O'Dare, Shade is attacked by Black Lantern David Knight. Due to his immortality, Shade is not killed when Knight rips his heart from his chest, and is able to resist the Black Lantern ring that attempts to attach itself to him. He traps Knight in the Darklands when Knight threatens to kill Jack and O'Dare. Using his own heart he traps Knight and banishes him permanently. He is found soon afterwards by Barry Allen and Hal Jordan, who ask for transportation to the Ghost Zone. He agrees to help, and they locate the rotting body of Prometheus in the Ghost Zone.

Brightest Day

Shade is sought by Jay Garrick, Doctor Mid-Nite, Sebastian Faust, and Wildcat, all of whom seek his assistance in locating Obsidian. He is found in his home in a comatose state, apparently placed there by the Starheart-possessed Obsidian, who wanted to stop Shade from revealing "secrets". Soon afterwards Shade is captured by Eclipso, who brainwashes him. At the behest of Saint Walker he is sought and rescued by Starman and Atom, who manage to free him of the brainwashing. He turns on his erstwhile captor, helping the heroes defeat Eclipso.

The Shade

Attacked at his home in Opal City, Shade sets off on a world-spanning quest to discover the origin of the assassination attempt. At the same time he explores his past, and encounters numerous figures that have been important in his long life, as well as exploring the extent of his own powers. It eventually becomes clear that the assassination was ordered by a member of his own family, Dudley, Lord Caldecott, acting in concert with an ancient cult. The cult accidentally unleashes ancient godlike beings on London, whom Shade is able to defeat by trapping them in a pocket dimension and transporting them back to their home dimension.

The Speed of Darkness

As Shade grows increasingly worried that he will return to his life of crime and jeopardize his relationship with Hope, his shadow powers take it upon themselves to begin committing crimes on his behalf. When this is discovered by Hope, who believes that Shade has relapsed, the shadows kidnap and brainwash her, and entrap Shade in the Darklands. He is able to push some shadow into Central City, where it attracts the attention of Kid Flash and the Flash, who come to his aid. They help him rescue Hope and regain control of the Darklands.

Powers and Abilities

Shade is the strongest known channeller of the shadow powers of the Darklands, a dimension of sentient darkness that he can channel to a variety of effects. He can also use this dimension to teleport himself and others, with no known limits to the distance he can travel; it can also be used to travel through time. He is functionally immortal and practically indestructible. He is intelligent and resourceful.

In fact, there are two bridges on this picture. At the end of the sixties, the whole road was rebuilt with costly means. The first (lower) bridge was made seemingly indestructible, with 50 cm thick armoured concrete. But, some years later an avalanche blocked the bridge upper inlet, pushing the river away from its bed, over the road behind the upper pier of the bridge. With such a strong flow the road was soon washed out. This new wooden bridge is one of the many, since then to overcome this new gap. But the flow will soon achieve the destruction of the upper pier of the concrete bridge from its rear, destroying both. Of course, costly emergency reparation of the upper pier would be possible, but so far I know, this upper pier is not anchored on the rock, but on alluvial debris. So, the problem will soon recur.

The secular battle at this point is probably desperate for humans. A more aerial concrete bridge implies complex corrections of an allready steep road and is vulnerable to rocks and avalanches hits. Having many years to turn around this problem, I think the best is probably a tunnel under the river, turning it from behind, since just above, the are very steep rapids, directly on the cliffs.

Here is a photo from Sunday during our walk along the Prescott-Russell Trail.

I'm becoming a big fan of this nearly indestructible Chuckit ball, and often will spend an hour or more carrying it around, putting it down only when something really interesting requires all my sniffing attention. This way it's up to me to decide when I want Dad to throw it, putting it in his hand or dropping it at his feet and racing away. Once I was so caught up looking behind me for the ball that I ran right into a tree!

Who ever desired each other as we do? Let us look

for the ancient ashes of hearts that burned,

and let our kisses touch there, one by one,

till the flower, disembodied, rises again.

Let us love that Desire that consumed its own fruit

and went down, aspect and power, into the earth:

We are its continuing light,

its indestructible, fragile seed.

That Desire, interred in time’s deep winter,

by snows and spring-times, absence and autumns,

bring to it the apple’s new light,

that freshness disclosed by a strange wound,

like that ancient Desire that journeys in silence

through submerged mouths’ eternities.

For over 30 years the ČME3 loco's have been build by ČKD in what's these days the Czech Republic. Over 8000 of these machines have been build and they can be found all overf the world. However they are best known for their presence on the russian broad gauge lines. Many of them have been build for the former Soviet Union and as they are almost indestructible they can still be seen in the modern-day countries. Latvia also still has quite a few of them. Mostly for shunting duties, but they also haul slow mainline trains. Quite a few of them have been modernised and repainted in. a bright orange and blue livery.

During a cold and wet winter's day, ČME3ME-3150 was one of the 2 loco's on shunting duty in Jelgava. On the south city of the station it was busy shunting a train for one of the harbours.

We spent a morning at a school in a VERY rural part of Africa. We rumbled up hot dusty back roads in the Apparently Indestructible Truck Thingie and after a number of spine jarring bumps, we rolled up in front of a brick building.

It was a drab brick affair with peeling paint and a tired principal standing out front. My expectations weren't all that high.

But there were kids singing inside and despite the drab feel of the place, there seemed to be a little cloud of joy surrounding it.

We were led into a grade eleven classroom and the kids sat there looking at us with shy eyes and we looked back, nodding and smiling and feeling like nasty interruptions in an otherwise lovely day.

The principal assembled the kids and they started to sing.

Okay: I admit it. I put my polite face on. I was prepared to endure a school assembly type of thing.

That lasted five minutes. As the kids sang and the audience clapped something PDC (Pretty Darn Cool) happened.

The kids started to laugh and really sing and dance. Energy infused the room and suddenly everything was magical. Inside of a few minutes, we were all laughing and clapping along with them.

It was one of those wonderful travel moments where two completely different cultures meet, shake hands and actually like each other.

It happened in a "way too hot" classroom in a town so small I'm not sure it even has a name.

This shot is for you, Aaron. Hope you like it. For some reason, as I stood there watching people enjoy being together I thought of you.

I have, of course, given it a really bad pun for a title...which also reminds me of you. Ahem.

The common chicory (Cichorium intybus) is still blooming with its many light blue blossoms along the edges of our roads and country lanes. I love this indestructible flowering plant because I like its light blue colour so much. It is also a medicinal plant and - what many people no longer realise - a plant whose underground parts can be used to make chicory coffee if the roots are dried, roasted and ground beforehand. The war and post-war generation will still remember this taste, which differs slightly from the taste of real coffee. However, chicory is also said to be an edible wild plant that can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen, for example in soups, salads, sauces or as a stir-fry vegetable.

So I’m sitting alone at the kitchen table past any sane person’s bedtime, staring at my son’s canvas wallet. It is much too thick and stuffed for a kid who is unemployed and dependent. I lift it, hold it, weigh it in my hand. I’m surprised to find that it is filled with coinage. Bulky, and heavy with coins. It is also a bit soiled with light dirt, from serving as an inadvertent hand rag for the hands of a teenage boy.

Will was right, this bit of pocket organization will probably go on forever. Never wear out.

A couple weeks ago, Allison presented me with a new wallet. I’m not sure why, except that I actually needed one. But that doesn’t really seem like an adequate reason. I’ve used the same wallet for all the years we’ve been married, which in 16 days will be 22 years. That wallet has held up quite well over the years, but of course 22 are a great many. The edges are worn, torn, and the seams are opening,. When I reach in to pull out a bill, if there are any, I also always pull out a thread as well, and of course this furthers the deterioration process. The once textured leather, alligator-like, is worn smooth and flat and polished to an unnatural sheen.

Upon receiving the new one, I sat at this very table and emptied its contents into sorted little piles and rid myself of the bulk of bits of paper and notes that had long since lost meaning, of receipts for possible returns that showed no signs of ever having contained any written information. Several years of expired car and motorcycle registrations found their way to the trash. I carefully folded and stowed bits that would of course, always be needed – like the yellow legal pad corner that contained, in the blue ink, all-caps, block printing style of my father, the fuel/oil mixture ratio of gasoline and 30-weight detergent motor oil on which the boys’ Maytag engine runs.

When finished, the new wallet made its way to my pocket and the old, no doubt feeling suddenly cold and deserted, lay where it was emptied.

The next day, Will asked me what I would do with the old wallet. “I have no idea,” I told him, “I suppose it will lie around until mom gets frustrated and throws it away.” Will asked if he could have it. I told him of course he could, but asked why he’d want a falling-apart, worn-out billfold. He answered that he thought he’d like a wallet that could be worn out. He didn’t think his wallet could be worn out, and that there was something friendly about a wallet that would grow old and worn.

My heart smiled and wondered at the depth of his contemplations. I wondered if he was feeling vibrations of my years in the emptied, frayed folds. Perhaps he was picturing me in younger, more textured, less worn and thinned days. Maybe he was reaching into a past that he could only trust existed but of which there is no evidence, save bits of weathered and worn leather, textile, and saggy skin. It is possible that he could be merely fantasizing that he, too, as apparently his dad had, could grow older, and richer, and have a deeper past on which to ponder, for at the moment there was no evidence that he was any different than his canvas wallet. In fact, they seem quite the same – rough, indestructible, sturdy construction, and slightly soiled.

There is a moment, maybe a long one, between the invulnerable, immortal, forever-young freedom of adolescence and the growing responsibilities and reality of growing up, during which a boy’s thoughts begin to morph. He begins to contemplate if maybe this slow becoming never actually comes. Suddenly his short past life and shallow experience whisper to his untrusting heart that he’s had all there is. His short past grows longer in his mind and he feels as if he’s lived forever with nothing to show for it. He begins to look for himself before he existed. He searches through the past of his father for glimpses of his becoming, and perhaps sees his reflection, but as of now, he feels no gathered wisdom, no garnered confidence, no assurity of future success based on past work. He glances at himself in the now and sees smooth skin, peach fuzz, lean muscle, tender feet, and green behind his ears. These observations provide little confidence for the young man who has only begun to imagine the road that lies ahead, has measure himself against, and found that his whole being is out of balance.

It may seem like a strange request, the owning of a discarded, worn out leather wallet to replace a newer, indestructible, hip, canvas one. But there is great solace in knowing that hard work makes a mark and assures us that we’ve done well. Reminds us that we work toward an end, and that the infinite vanity we feel in our seemingly pointless pursuits and preparations actually moves us slowly forward toward a goal that brings with it the trophies of physical erosion and the marks of the passage of time as evidence of work well done.

Indeed, many of us carry the previously discarded, the finished-with, the no longer needed. I carry, and use a pair of 60 year-old pliers, and wire clippers in my guitar case as I live out my routine and search through my pre-existence for images of me as assurance of purpose, and meaning, and perhaps even immortality in the post-Rod era.

Until now, I’ve had only the past for promise. I’ve had only the bits that I carry. But I guess I’ve reached a stage where I begin replacing the used-up and the used-up is used for future promise.

It is profound what promise is held in the empty folds of worn out leather, what image is reflected in the polished shine of the tired surface of an old wallet. Promise and reflection, these are elements of wealth, and one should always carry them.

„Steinhaus mit Seelenloch“- ein Kunstwerk von Hansjörg Voth im Park.

at the Love Island in the park there is a

„Stone house with a hole gor the soul“. The Munich artist Hansjörg Voth describes and explains his work as follows: “The stone house is built from 35 green dolomite blocks with the following dimensions: height 4.20 meters, width 1.80 meters, length 3.60 meters. The stone blocks are raw on the outside. The abutting edges and inner surfaces are cut. On the south side of the gable there is a hole that is drilled inwards at an angle of 23.5 ° (sic!). Inside the building there is a stone throne. At the winter solstice, at 12 p.m., a ray of light falls through the hole in the gable onto the throne at chest height. The inaccessibility of the building and the indestructibility of the material (pyramid, temple, etc.)

Alter Ego: Destron

Name: Tatum Thorpe

Allegiance: Villain

Powers:

* Extreme super strength and enhanced stamina

Weapons:

* Destrite (indestructible metal) armour body suit

Key Weakness: If he is met by an electrical current it will conduct and shall electrocute him due to Destrite being highly conductive.

Origin:

Tatum was pretty much you're stereotypical burly henchmen until he realised he could make more of himself and become better than those he used to protect. When he and some other goons were ordered to move a crate full of Destrite across town he was quick to put down the it her goons and lift it for himself. He took the metal to some of his sources he had accumulate over the years and had them fashion an indestructible suit that would protect him from a direct hit from a tank. With this suit, power and intelligence he thinks he's untouchable and now tries to trump fellow villains to be the best of the best at what they do.

It's an interesting story of how the salamander is historically associated with asbestos; from medieval folklore to modern-day symbolism.

“Preliminary tests of the B&B Innovative Tactical’s new hardsuit have shown generally positive results. The newer model’s reinforced bio-mechanical limbs are nearly indestructible and have proven to cause psychological damage within the desired range on the test targets. While our military advisors have argued for more armour around the pilot, accounting has made it clear that the budget has no space for ergonomic considerations. The hardsuit will cost around 9 million dollars, you could buy all the pilots you want for that price.”

Here’s my cyberpunk horror monstrosity of an entry in the 9 Brick Mech contest. Enjoy!
