It has certainly got a fair bit colder in the past two days . Nevertheless the garden is beginning to awaken I took these snowdrops , hellebores and violas yesterday . It is always good to see the first flowers of the new horticultural year.
I expect someone will come out with that old chestnut that the cold weather will kill the flowers off, actually it won’t . I have been cultivating this little patch of earth for almost thirty years plants always begin to flower in late January and even if they are hit by very cold weather and inches of snow they will stay well and flower away when the thaw comes . I planted the hellebores over 25 years ago they have coped with severe winters and hot and dry summers without a problem I think they are probably indestructible ….and an annual joy

Happy Halloween Everyone
As anyone who has followed my recent meandering thoughts will know I've become interested in vintage lenses. There are some old lenses that have taken on a cult status in the world of the vintage lens aficionado, one of them being the Helios 44M 58mm F/2.0, renowned for it's extreme bokeh, which in the late 70s and early 80s shipped as the kit lens with the Russian made Zenit TTL cameras. They made well over a million of these cameras and lenses and both are built like soviet tanks, basically indestructible, so there are loads of them around for very cheap. I decided that instead of looking for the lens on its own I'd look for a Zenit TTL camera on eBay that had a Helios already on it. I found one in no time at all and £20 later I walked away with camera and lens, bought from a very agreeable older gentleman who happened to live only 20 minutes from my home. So if anyone out there is in the market for Zenit TTL 35mm film camera, body only(!), give me a call. 😁 I'm keeping the lens!

Love locks are typically engraved with the lovers names and a meaningful date before being installed on bridges, fences, statues, or other installations to commemorate the indestructible bond. They form a fun display of affection and optimism.
Sealing reciprocal love with a lock has became a big thing. Bridges in Rome, Venice, Paris and Rotterdam are ‘adorned’ with them. Even in Purmerend and Oosterwolde. Lovers attach their lock on the bridge and throw the key in the water. Some municipalities remove the locks, amongst other things fearing that parts of the bridge might collapse under the load. Others leave them be, using the gestalt as a city marketing tool.
The origins of the lock love ritual aren’t entirely clear. Couples in Eastern Europe seem to have started it in the 80s of the previous century. When the ritual was mentioned in the Italian novel 'Ho Voglia Di Te' by author Federico Moccia (2007), it took off in Italy. The story: the main protagonists swore to love each other eternally by attaching a padlock to the Milvio bridge and throwing the key into the river Tiber.
The first Dutch lock bridges are some five years old.

I drove almost 3 hours (one way) for this?
We've had a few days of thawing this week here in southern New England, but this past Friday, when on a lark I decided to go on a long overdue photosafari, temperature was well below freezing (as it undoubtedly was during the night that preceded it). I'm glad I had micro spikes on my Lacrosse Alphaburly boots (not a sponsor) and a pair of indestructible Leki trekking poles (not a sponsor either LOL), because the trail down to the falls was steep and thoroughly iced up (I imagine that's what the path to Purgatory must be like).
No wonder I had the place all to myself! What fool would would risk his, her or xis life for a few lousy photos in conditions like these, except maybe Gavin Hardcastle 😂
