Pretty rad sign--in the First Unitarian Church of Portland, no less

Photo by David Kotsibie. Event featuring Jael Ealey Richardson, Salimah Kassam, Ivan Coyote and Lisa Charleyboy. Unique voices from the Wordfest lineup filter through the “white noise” surrounding the charged concept of inclusivity. The panel tackles hot button issues such as: “What does diversity mean anyway today?” and “Who gets to decide what stories receive mainstream attention?” to “What voices are (still) absent or underrepresented in the book world?” This salon-style discussion is organized by the Festival’s volunteer White Noise Talks committee.

On April 23, 2024, 4H youth gathered and met on the patio of the USDA Whitten building to discuss promoting inclusive and welcoming communities during the 2024 4-H conference in Washington D.C. They then learned about the meaning of the Islamic holiday Eid al-Fitr and the Jewish tradition and celebration of Passover.

This year upholds USDA 97th National 4-H Conference. The program features 4-H Youth Delegates from around the country that will share their voice with federal government officials in the nation’s capital. Working in separate roundtable groups, these youth researched and came up with solutions to challenge experienced by federal agencies and congressional committees with the goal of impacting change in America.

16 Delegates have been prepared with links to reading material and websites as well as working on their own with a collegiate facilitator to research and develop a perspective on the topic and formally present recommendations to USDA staff based on the following:

Challenge question: Imagine going to school and you are isolated and treated differently from those around you, simply because you come from a different faith tradition or identities than your peers. It might help the support of allies.

-How can 4-H members become leaders to develop values and encourage skills that help foster a sense of belonging?

-How can youth help their communities become inclusive environments where all young people feel supported and welcomed?

The Youth delegates offered valuable insights to strengthen USDA’s interactions and communications with young people to better understand and improve programs, services and training needs that empower future civic leaders to be thoughtful in their actions, educate others to help people feel connected and supported in their communities.
