I know this engine house has been photographed dozens of times before, but I'm afraid I find it irresistible. So I thought I'd try it from a different angle. This is the Towanroath Shaft engine house on the side of the cliffs in between St Agnes and Chapel Porth on the north coast of Cornwall. It is part of the Wheal Coates mine complex.
Earliest records indicate a mine at the site since 1692. The present mine opened in 1802 and came into full production in 1815. At the height of its production, 140 people were employed at the site to mine a seam of tin just below sea level. It closed for the first time in 1844 and was allowed by the owners to flood.
A new owner re-opened the mine in 1872 and built the Towanroath Shaft engine house to allow deep mining to commence. The engine house was used to pump water from the adjacent shaft which was 600 feet deep - well below sea level.
The mine closed again in 1889 when the price of tin fell. In 1906, new ownership hoped to work the mine for both tin and copper as Wheal Coates had produced a small amount of copper ore more than a century earlier. The period of operation from 1911-1913 was not very successful because tin production was sporadic and the mining boom was long gone. The mine closed for good in 1914.
Most of the mine buildings, which are Grade II-listed and from the 1870s, are on the top of the cliff out of shot. These, plus the Towanroath engine house, are preserved and maintained by the National Trust.

The vervain hummingbird is perhaps the second-smallest bird in the world after the smallest, the bee hummingbird, though some other tiny ones are close to it in size. It is about 6 cm (2.4 in) long, including the 1 cm (0.39 in) bill, and weighs about 2 to 2.4 g (0.071 to 0.085 oz).
A large falcon that is endemic to South Asia including parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. This is as large as a Peregine Falcon and taller than Saker Falcon, but more leaner unlike the bulky build of Saker Falcon or Peregrine Falcon. We sighted them on two days in action - they were hunting in the area and one of them was fighting with the Saker Falcon. They seem to be quite common in the desert regions and as a fan of falcons was delighted to be sighting them and seeing them in action.
This was sighted in Pokhran, again a desert region. The bird was hunting in the area possibly targeting the many small birds like Pipits, Larks, Crested Larks, Wheatears etc.. There was no dearth of prey. Unfortunately, we didn't see it with any catch though and we were in a rush to see the Indian Bustards, so had to move along.
Many thanks in advance for your views, faves and feedback - very much appreciated.

St Anne's Church, on Kew Green, is adjacent to the world famous Royal Botanic Gardens. This parish church in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames dates from 1714, and is a Grade II listed building.
Many famous people are buried at St Anne’s, including English portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough (died 1788), Sir William Hooker (d. 1865), director of the Royal Gardens at Kew, and his son, English botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Hooker (d. 1911).
Red Deer - Cervus elaphus
Double click image....
The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species. The red deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. Red deer have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the meat (venison) from red deer is used as a food source.
The red deer is the fourth-largest deer species behind moose, elk and sambar deer. It is a ruminant, eating its food in two stages and having an even number of toes on each hoof, like camels, goats and cattle. European red deer have a relatively long tail compared to their Asian and North American relatives. Subtle differences in appearance are noted between the various subspecies of red deer, primarily in size and antlers, with the smallest being the Corsican red deer found on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia and the largest being the Caspian red deer (or maral) of Asia Minor and the Caucasus Region to the west of the Caspian Sea. The deer of central and western Europe vary greatly in size, with some of the largest deer found in the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe.Western European red deer, historically, grew to large size given ample food supply (including people's crops), and descendants of introduced populations living in New Zealand and Argentina have grown quite large in both body and antler size. Large red deer stags, like the Caspian red deer or those of the Carpathian Mountains, may rival the wapiti in size. Female red deer are much smaller than their male counterparts.
The European red deer is found in southwestern Asia (Asia Minor and Caucasus regions), North Africa and Europe. The red deer is the largest non-domesticated land mammal still existing in Ireland. The Barbary stag (which resembles the western European red deer) is the only member of the deer family represented in Africa, with the population centred in the northwestern region of the continent in the Atlas Mountains. As of the mid-1990s, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria were the only African countries known to have red deer.
In the Netherlands, a large herd (ca. 3000 animals counted in late 2012) lives in the Oostvaarders Plassen, a nature reserve. Ireland has its own unique subspecies. In France the population is thriving, having multiplied fivefold in the last half-century, increasing from 30,000 in 1970 to approximately 160,000 in 2014. The deer has particularly expanded its footprint into forests at higher altitudes than before. In the UK, indigenous populations occur in Scotland, the Lake District, and the South West of England (principally on Exmoor). Not all of these are of entirely pure bloodlines, as some of these populations have been supplemented with deliberate releases of deer from parks, such as Warnham or Woburn Abbey, in an attempt to increase antler sizes and body weights. The University of Edinburgh found that, in Scotland, there has been extensive hybridisation with the closely related sika deer.
Several other populations have originated either with "carted" deer kept for stag hunts being left out at the end of the hunt, escapes from deer farms, or deliberate releases. Carted deer were kept by stag hunts with no wild red deer in the locality and were normally recaptured after the hunt and used again; although the hunts are called "stag hunts", the Norwich Staghounds only hunted hinds (female red deer), and in 1950, at least eight hinds (some of which may have been pregnant) were known to be at large near Kimberley and West Harling; they formed the basis of a new population based in Thetford Forest in Norfolk. Further substantial red deer herds originated from escapes or deliberate releases in the New Forest, the Peak District, Suffolk, Lancashire, Brecon Beacons, and North Yorkshire, as well as many other smaller populations scattered throughout England and Wales, and they are all generally increasing in numbers and range. A census of deer populations in 2007 and again in 2011 coordinated by the British Deer Society records the red deer as having continued to expand their range in England and Wales since 2000, with expansion most notable in the Midlands and East Anglia.

An estimated 45,000 people visited Morecambe for this year's Vintage by the Sea festival including record crowds on the first day.
The event on Morecambe Promenade, in its 11th year, celebrated the iconic music, fashion, film, art, design and dance of the 20th century on Saturday and Sunday.
The vintage festival, centred around the Midland, the Platform and the Promenade Gardens, was blessed with glorious sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday was mainly dry too, with rain only coming late in the afternoon.
People dressed in fashions from the 20s to the 90s to strut their stuff and the Vintage Marketplace at The Platform and the local and regional makers' market in The Midland were huge attractions.
Perfectly preserved classic cars outside the Midland and Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust’s vintage bus rides from Heysham to Bare also proved very popular.
Other events included the iconic Best In Show catwalk, vintage cycle bike rides, and the new Boogie Ballroom with popular classes including Bhangra with Sohan Kailey, the Charleston, Northern Soul and even breakdancing with the nationally acclaimed UC Crew Powered by Hip Hop.
"We were absolutely thrilled to see so many thousands and thousands of people in Morecambe this weekend, enjoying not only the joyful festival programme made possible by so many artists and performers, but also to see our audiences take in everything else Morecambe has to offer as so many local cafes, restaurants, bars and shops put on their own Fringe events, ensuring the Promenade has never felt so vibrant," said Elena Jackson from Deco Publique and the festival organising team.
"Vintage by the Sea really is a shared celebration of this place and we’d like to thank each and every person who had a role in making the event happen and who joined as a visitor over the weekend”.
It was a great day to see finches at Lake Meyer Park, including this pretty American goldfinch in winter plumage.

Three bulls including Hoback (the big old bull on the right) hanging out at a creek with a cow. The rut is over at this point, so the bulls are relaxed and perhaps just wondering who the father is. I purposely used a closed aperture for a big depth of field, which ended up also showing the telephone lines in the distance. Next season I'll either open the aperture or get in the creek or both. The grounds of Rundāle Palace amount to 85 hectares including the French Baroque Garden which covers 10 hectares. Based on a layout by Francesco Rastrelli from 1735/1736, the garden was created by Christopher and Michael Weyland between 1736 and 1740. The garden borders a former hunting park to the south, whereas the area on the north side is used for agriculture.
The renovation began in 1972 when the Rundāle Palace Museum was established. At that time, the Baroque garden was overgrown, the carved trees had grown tall and thin, and there was a school sports ground instead of the parterre. The renovation was implemented in several stages and with substantial support by volunteers: trimming of overgrown trees, restoration of paths, replanting of trees and bushes, restoration of bosquets surrounded by hedges, installation of arbour passages or pergolas, reconstruction of ornamental parterres, pools and fountains, restoration of the Gardener’s House. Rastrelli’s design did not give a specific bosquet filling, but it shows pavilions that were never built. Therefore, samples of baroque gardens were considered in the creation of the bosquet fillings.
In 2004, the Green Theatre was opened. In 2005, the rose garden on both sides of the ornamental parterre was commenced. It contains 2,230 rose varieties, including 600 historical varieties. The restoration of fruit tree orchards commenced in 2018. Lists of plants used in the garden of Rundāle Palace and thematic exhibitions are shown in the Gardener’s House.

Marine life, or sea life or ocean life, is the plants, animals and other organisms that live in the salt water of the sea or ocean, or the brackish water of coastal estuaries. At a fundamental level, marine life affects the nature of the planet. Marine organisms produce oxygen and sequester carbon. Shorelines are in part shaped and protected by marine life, and some marine organisms even help create new land. The term marine comes from the Latin mare, meaning sea or ocean. Most life forms evolved initially in marine habitats. By volume, oceans provide about 90 percent of the living space on the planet. The earliest vertebrates appeared in the form of fish, which live exclusively in water. Some of these evolved into amphibians which spend portions of their lives in water and portions on land. Other fish evolved into land mammals and subsequently returned to the ocean as seals, dolphins or whales. Plant forms such as kelp and algae grow in the water and are the basis for some underwater ecosystems. Plankton forms the general foundation of the ocean food chain, particularly the phytoplankton which are key primary producers. Marine invertebrates exhibit a wide range of modifications to survive in poorly oxygenated waters, including breathing tubes as in mollusc siphons. Fish have gills instead of lungs, although some species of fish, such as the lungfish, have both. Marine mammals, such as dolphins, whales, otters, and seals need to surface periodically to breathe air. There are over 200,000 documented marine species with perhaps two million marine species yet to be documented. Marine species range in size from the microscopic, including phytoplankton which can be as small as 0.02 micrometres, to huge cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), including the blue whale – the largest known animal reaching 33 metres in length. Marine microorganisms, including protists, bacteria and viruses, constitute about 70% of the total marine biomass. 31151
Gustaf Adolfs torg ("Gustaf Adolf's square") is a town square located in central Gothenburg, Sweden. It was named Stortorget (the Big Square) until 1854 when a statue of the founding father of Gothenburg, king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was raised. Surrounding the square are the city hall, the bource, including the law court extension and the main harbour canal of Gothenburg.
Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632) led Sweden to military supremacy during the Thirty Years' War, helping to determine the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe. His most notable military victory was the Battle of Breitenfeld. He was poised to make himself a major European leader, but was killed at the Battle of Lützen in 1632. Within only a few years of his accession, Sweden had become the largest nation in Europe after Russia and Spain.

A distinctive, large white wading bird with a spatula for a bill.
Adult has short crest, yellowish breast patch.
First year birds have paler bill, with fine black wingtips visible in flight.
Sleeping birds have horizontal posture and bulging neck, vs. more vertical stance of egrets.
Found in wetlands with shallow water (including tidal flats), where feeds by sweeping its bill side-to-side for crustaceans and small fish.
May be confused with egrets when sleeping, but note stockier, more thickset overall appearance.

There are multiple definitions for when a boat becomes a ship, including size, purpose, and other characteristics:
Size: Some say a ship is a vessel that's at least 197 feet (60 meters) long. Others say a ship is a large, ocean-faring vessel.
Purpose: A ship is a versatile vessel that can be used for commercial, military, or scientific purposes. A boat is often used for leisure activities.
Masts: A sailing ship may be defined as having at least three masts.
Deck: A ship may have a through-fitted deck, while a boat may have an open cockpit.
Weight: A ship may weigh at least 500 tonnes.
Crew: A ship may have a commander and a crew, while a boat may just have whomever is on it at the time.
Personal use: A vessel may be considered a yacht if it was constructed solely for personal use and has a combined occupancy of less than 100, including crew.
Submarines are technically ships, but they are traditionally referred to as boats. The original submarines were small and manned only when in use, so “boat” was appropriate.

Historic Mt. Hope Cemetery founded in 1838 Final resting place for many famous people including Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Rochester, NY
From various public domain photos, including Drazen Nesic.
I found this one relatively quick to create. The beauty of working digitally was that I was able to keep the main elements (the tree line, the boat, the fisherman, the reflection of the boat, the ripples in the water, the foliage and the birds) on separate layers, so I could easily move things around until the composition felt right. And I could change the color, saturation and tone of the colors independently of each other. If I had to paint this with watercolor, oil, etc. it would in fact involved a lot of redos, paint overs etc. I was thinking of traditional Japanese art, especially where it contemplates the natural world for spiritual insight and as a reflection of human emotion. In fact the long fishing pole into a misty cloud reminded me of my youthful flirtation with Zen Buddhism.

During our most recent trip to Zion National Park, I went to one of my favorite viewpoints, the Canyon Overlook, as it has become a tradition for me. I always love capturing the golden hour scenes of canyons, even though it's a challenging experience. However, the challenge of getting it right always seems to lure me out, even on a cold, blustery evening.
In the past, I relied heavily on exposure blending using an HDR plug-in and was never fully satisfied with the results. Over the years, I have learned that taking images with intention is important when you plan on exposure blending later. For this scene, I took images by exposing the darkest shadows and dialed in exposure compensation until I got the bright part in the sky exposed perfectly. It took me about five images, including my safety shots. Although I am not fully there with my editing, I love the results more now.
I like including sunstars in shots to give a bit of interest. Sometimes it has a flare and this time combing a flare, a sunstar and a little different perspective. Not conventional composition but I like it.

The Anastasia Formation extends for 2 miles north along the shoreline with cliffs up to 15 feet high at the House of Refuge. Looking south from the end of the boardwalk, Bathtub Reef is visible.
Immediately ahead is an outcrop with small burrows, aminated crusts, solution pipes, a notch and an abrasion platform, and a mass of collapsed rock. Moving north along the beach moving toward the House of Refuge, there are several outcrops with conspicuous notches.
At the House of Refuge are prominent planar bedding, many fossils (including Busycon), small and large burrows, thick laminated calcium carbonate crusts, lithified infillings, solution pipes, notched cliffs, promontories and small coves, and many large masses of collapsed bedrock.

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is an American four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin). Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft.
The versatile airframe has found uses in other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. More than 40 variants of the Hercules, including civilian versions marketed as the Lockheed L-100, operate in more than 60 nations.
The C-130 entered service with the U.S. in 1956, followed by Australia and many other nations. During its years of service, the Hercules has participated in numerous military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. In 2007, the transport became the fifth aircraft to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary customer, which for the C-130 is the United States Air Force. The C-130 is the longest continuously produced military aircraft at more than 60 years, with the updated Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules being produced as of 2023.
C-130H Identical to the Echo variant but with more powerful Allison T56-A-15 turboprop engines. Introduced in Jun. 1974 with 308 ordered.

The air is alive with the inviting aroma of citrus, mimosas, and incense, weaving a tapestry of sensory delight.
Within this whimsical haven, numerous comfortable areas await discovery, including an array of exciting books ready to whisk you away on imaginative adventures. Even the daisies, watching from behind the curtains, seem to partake in the day's festivities. It's a perfect opportunity to relax with a refreshing drink in hand, lose yourself in the pages of a captivating book, and savor the essence of spring from the serenity of this spring lounge.
