One of the most amazing places I've ever visited!
7,000 feet above sea level and nestled on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range, the majestic city soars above the Urabamba Valley below. The Incan built structure has been deemed the “Lost Cities”, unknown until its relatively recent discovery in 1911. Archaeologists estimate that approximately 1200 people could have lived in the area, though many theorize it was most likely a retreat for Incan rulers. Due to it’s isolation from the rest of Peru, living in the area full time would require traveling great distances just to reach the nearest village.
31 December 2020: Update on The Corona Pandemic – The drop in the number of hospitalisations and new covid cases is being confirmed. In the week leading to 27 December on average 1,789 people a day tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
The figure is down 29% on the week. The figure is dipping below 2,000 for the second successive day now. It's the first time in three months that the figures are so good. Experts, however, are warning against too much optimism, fewer people are having themselves tested during the Christmas holidays and the impact of family gatherings and vacationers still has to be seen. But still, Belgium is doing particularly well compared to other European countries. We are currently having an incidence of 260 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past two weeks. In the Netherlands, this is 907, in Germany 379 and in France 277. The U.K. is facing a figure of 720 and is struggling with the new variant of coronavirus. As a consequence, there is a growing fears that international travellers may import the coronavirus in times when Belgian figures are improving. Therefore, the government announced yesterday tighter measures for holiday makers returning home. The new rules will apply to anybody returning to Belgium after a stay of at least 48 hours abroad. People will have to undergo a corona test upon arrival, self-isolate for 7 days and take a new corona test after one week. The new scheme will come into force as from today, and will apply at least until 15 January. All of this makes perfect sense to me; however, I’m wondering how one can drive compliance to these rules. The occasional checks in airports, on international trains and on motorways will most likely not do the trick. Anyhow, we’re happy that we stayed at home but we’re missing our international travel. This was just an incredibly beautiful view. The sun was perfectly casting rays over Machu Picchu - you could see why the Incas chose the location in the first place. I remember thinking it was spectacularly perfect and so I turned to Edwin and asked him if it was often like this - he replied "Every day!"

Moray, located in the Sacred Valley of Peru. The current theory is that the large concentric rings created a series of different microclimates. Studies have shown that many of the terraces contain soil that must have been imported from other parts of the region. The temperature at the top of the pits varies from that at the bottom by as much as 15ºC, creating a series of micro-climates that apparently match many of the varied conditions across the Incan empire, leading to the conclusion that the rings were used as a test bed to see what crops could grow where.

These are the largest known Inca ruins in Ecuador. The most significant building is the Temple of the Sun, an elliptically shaped building constructed around a large rock. The building is constructed in the Inca way without mortar, as are most of the structures in the complex. The stones were carefully chiseled and fashioned to fit together perfectly. The Temple of the Sun was positioned so that on the solstices, at exactly the right time of day, sunlight would fall through the center of the doorway of the small chamber at the top of the temple. Most of this chamber has fallen down.
Ingapirca had long been settled by the Cañari indigenous people, who called it Hatun Cañar. As the Inca Empire expanded into southern Ecuador, the Inca Túpac Yupanqui encountered the Cañari "Hatun Cañar" tribe and had difficulties in conquering them. In a second attempt, he used different political strategies, marrying the Cañari princess and improving the Cañari city of Guapondelig, calling it Pumapungo (nowadays Cuenca).
