The ruins of Isla del Sol aren't really that impressive, and we didn't spend that long here, to be perfectly honest, apart from Macchu Pichu, I don't think there are any ruins in South America that come close to what you'll see in Mexico/central America.

Inca ruins on the Inca Trail Day 1

Walk pass Llactapata. The lower terraced walls are particularly beautiful as they snake back and forth, following the contours of the river. Llactapata was primarily an agricultural station used to supply Machu Picchu with maize, the staple crop of the Incas. The settlement comprised over one hundred houses for the workers and soldiers, including five baths.

My favourite Inca site at Pisac. We visited in the late afternoon when the tourists had left. The wind got up a little the place quite an eerie feel. Far more atmostspheric than Machu Piccu itself.

The Inca Tern, Larosterna inca, is a seabird in the family Sternidae. It is the only member of the genus Larosterna.

This uniquely-plumaged bird breeds on the coasts of Peru and Chile, and is restricted to the Humboldt current. It can be identified by its dark grey body, white moustache on the both sides of its head, and red-orange beak and feet.

The Inca Tern breeds on rocky cliffs. It nests in a hollow or burrow or sometimes the old nest of a Humboldt Penguin, and lays one or two eggs. The eggs are incubated for about 4 weeks, and the chicks leave the nest after 7 weeks.

This is a large tern, 41cm long. Sexes are similar; the adult is mostly slate-grey with white restricted to the facial plumes and the trailing edges of the wings. The large bill and legs are dark red. Immature birds are purple-brown, and gradually develop the facial plumes.

The Inca Tern feeds by plunge diving for fish like a Sterna tern. Its call is a cat-like mew.

Inca Dove Cottage in Alamo TX

From June 10-13, four days and three nights, I travelled by foot up and down hills for 39km on paths hundreds of years old. It was the Inca trail: challenging, beautiful and amazing. Something I won't be forgetting any time soon. On the third and longest day, right before you arrive at camp you have the opportunity to walk an extra 30 minutes to Intipata, this site of ancient, huge overgrown terraces. They are overgrown (a rare sight for the inca trail) because many hikers can't be bothered to complete the extra 30 minutes. But my god, is it worth it.

Trecho de Cusco a Machu Picchu Pueblo-Peru

The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In just 26 miles (43km) it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The Inca Trail terminates at the Sun Gate on Machu Picchu mountain. The route requires an ascent to beyond 4,200 metres (13,800 ft) above sea level, which can result in altitude sickness. Trekkers normally take four or five days to complete the Inca Trail.

Je kon vanaf Cusco wandelen naar een oude Inca stad. Het was niet gemakkelijk, we begrepen waarom de spanjaarden de inca's zo moelijk konden verslaan.
