Vancouver, BC / Canada - October 25, 2019: Swedish teenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg, leads a throng of 15,000 on a march through the streets of Vancouver to protest inaction on climate change.
Three months ago I reported this to Haringey through the FixMyStreet website. So far there is no sign of a fix.
I will re-report this to Haringey with my new photo taken on 12 October 2016. Another three months of inaction risks this alley having a sheet of ice if we get a cold winter.
At the U.S People’s Delegation Speak Out, individuals representing various communities from youth to frontline and indigenous communities to advocates/policy makers share their stories of grassroots and on-the-ground organizing in their communities to push back against federal inaction on climate in the United States.
A frozen statement on global climate change and inaction by the public and the Canadian government, while participating in the 2009 Polar Bear Swim in Vancouver, BC, Canada. What better time to raise the issue of the imminent threat facing Polar Bears (and the other environmental and societal impacts of climate change) than at the Polar Bear Swim?
On National Day of Action, Hundreds of New Yorkers Say: Washington Must Move Now on Immigration Reform, Halt Deportations
Statewide Campaign Demands Fairness and Equality for Immigrants in New York and Nationwide
(New York, NY) On a warm spring day, New York’s Foley Square was packed with New Yorkers - old and young, workers and students, families and faith leaders, elected officials and labor, immigrants and their allies - united with one message: inaction is not an option. New Yorkers for Real Immigration Reform, the statewide campaign organized by the New York Immigration Coalition, coordinated the rally as part of a national “Day of Action” for immigrants’ rights. In Los Angeles and in New York, advocates made clear that Congress needs to move immediately to pass immigration reform, that the Administration must stop deporting over a thousand people every day, and that immigrant communities refuse to wait any longer.
With deportations reaching over 2 million in the last six years – approximately 400,000 deportations a year since 2008 – New York’s immigrants and their families have suffered immensely while our Federal elected officials have failed to reach a fair and workable solution to our broken immigration system. At the rally, speakers representing New York’s diverse communities urged the Administration and members of Congress to act immediately to pass immigration reform and bring an end to the deportations that have torn immigrant families apart. Throughout the rally, speakers shared the same sentiment: that our communities will not stop fighting until we pass comprehensive immigration reform that honors family, bolsters the economy, serves the public interest, and provides a path to citizenship for undocumented Americans –our patience is running out.

Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, opened the rally by saying, “There is a crisis in our immigrant communities, with our families continuing to be ripped apart and hope torn asunder by destructive immigration policies. It is high time that Congress get on the right side of history and pass a bill that allows people to come out of the shadows and become citizens. It is high time that the Administration brings an end to the deportations that have decimated our communities. The level of inaction from Washington on the issue of immigration reform is a national disgrace. We will do what we can in the meantime to support our immigrant communities – like pushing forward municipal IDs for all New Yorkers regardless of status, or fighting for the New York State DREAM Act – but our Federal elected leaders must step up immediately and provide relief for the millions of immigrants waiting for solutions. Our communities will not - and cannot – simply wait any longer, and we demand that our politicians step up and show true courage and leadership.”
New York’s top elected officials, faith and labor leaders, immigrant advocates, and members of affected communities also came together to share stories highlighting the suffering that New Yorkers have faced in light of Congress’ stalemate.
“I am proud to stand side by side with advocates on this immigrant day of action, urging Congress to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” said Councilmember Carlos Menchaca, chair of the Immigration Committee in City Council. “At the local level, I will fight for a reform package that doesn't undercut important immigrant community needs. Congress needs to come together to end the suffering of our immigrant families and put them on a path to real security.”
“Comprehensive Immigration Reform isn't some passing political issue, it is a movement that will define a generation,” said Byron Silva, assistant business manager at Laborers’ Local 78.
“Immigration reform has been used as a political football for long enough,” said Janet Baharona, a cleaner in Manhattan who is a member of 32BJ SEIU. “Congress’ inaction – and the silence of my Congressman Michael Grimm – is tearing families in my community apart and pushing more and more hard working immigrants into the shadows and into poverty. Voters will hold Rep. Grimm and accountable for his actions.”
“For too long House Speaker John Boehner has let a small faction in the Republican party hold immigration reform hostage,’’ said S.J. Jung, president of MinKwon Center for Community Action. "Our NY Republican Congress Members now have a chance to break this stonewall by signing on to the discharge petition. We are done with lip service and delaying tactics! The Asian American and immigrant communities across the nation demand real immigration reform now!”
"Immigration reform is just as important to American citizens as it is to those whom are undocumented," said Magdolyn Kawas, member of the Arab American Association of New York. "Many of us were born and raised here, and still our communities continue to suffer from a broken immigration system. My father came to the U.S. for a better future for his family but, because of his immigration status, we are forced to live apart. As someone impacted and as a voter, I'm calling on Congress to take action. We need real reforms that will reunite me with my father and bring thousands of families back together."
“While we are resolved more than ever to put pressure on the House to act on comprehensive immigration, we are seriously concerned by the devastating impact of the deportations that have been tearing apart our communities,” said Imam Souleymane Konate with African Services Committee. “Seizing on the anniversary of the historic April 10th rally, we are appealing to the administration help build families, but not to destroy them.”
"Immigration reform is absolutely necessary. As a Catholic and a DREAMer, I strongly believe that immigrants need to be treated equally and recognized as part of this nation in soul, heart and mind. Let's make humane reform a reality,” said Dennisse Pizarro, an undocumented youth with Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC. “To congress and the white house: it is is said that we can make a change if we all work together"
"This is not a political issue for pundits to opine over, this is an issue of civil rights, respect, and basic human dignity. Washington has procrastinated for far too long, the need for reform is urgent and the time is now!" said Don Elisa-Garcia, member of La Fuente.

Here is the Arduino based Precision High Speed Photography Trigger in action during testing. This is a quick setup of the unit and a single solenoid valve so that I could go through the motions of testing the unit out using the IR sensor while making adjustments to the delay times to produce water drop collisions. During the process, I found several things that I could change to help make this an even easier process and I have already made those adjustments to the program in the unit. With the random way the drops fall, I would like to work on a way to see if I can make that more consistent. I am also thinking about adding switch to the Launch button so that I can put the unit in a loop mode to just keep taking photos until I turn the switch back off. I guess I could just put a rubber band on the remote to hold the button down too! ;-) Ha!
You will see in the video that pressing the Launch button starts the following sequence:
1) Turn out the Lamp
2) Fire the strobe to make sure it is not in sleep mode
3) Open the Shutter
4) Release two drops of water
5) Fire the strobes to freeze the action
6) Close the Shutter
7) Turn the Lamp back on
Tonight I want to test the sound trigger out and then I will start working on getting the valves setup in a way to help make things more consistent with the way the drops fall.
When I was in Skerries last week a crew were filming on location. A scene centred on this bus shelter and in the three hours I was there the only action I saw, other than standing around, was the chap in the shelter with the fur coat falling on his knees and roaring "Aaaaaaaagh"! I wasn't convinced of his acting abilities as I know that if I dropped on my knees the way they are now I would have screamed with so much more feeling:-)

Half Hearted Doesn’t Get You Started. It doesn’t matter what your business or job, if you don’t commit to doing something you love, you’re in danger of getting into the “half hearted” zone. This is more dangerous when you have your own business, but could also mean losing a job. The first thing you need to look at is your own desire to do the job at hand. If there is something in the business that you see as lucrative and that is the ONLY reason you want to do it, there is the possibility (or worse) that you can enter into it half heartedly. So, ask yourself if it is something that you are really passionate about. Does the task you have to do FEEL like work, or is it a pleasure? In my own experience, something that doesn’t “float your boat” is that which leads to a less than committed approach. Essentially, you need to reflect on your own desires, interests and passions to be able to make the right decisions. Avoiding Half Heartedness. I have already mentioned knowing what you want, the reason for doing it and your passion for the business. If you are sure that your choice is truly the one for you, there could be other factors that are causing your less than fully committed approach. These things usually end up being psychological and can destroy confidence and therefore the belief that you will get results. The importance of looking inside yourself and discovering the underlying problem cannot be stressed enough, but this is not always easy to accept. Many people make statements that are designed to take away the feeling of failure in a personal way. They tend to blame a system for not working, even though others are using it with great success. Either that or it’s so and so’s fault because they promised to have you earning by the end of month 1. The problem with this attitude is that EVERY opportunity is no opportunity. NOTHING works because the person is relying on others and not doing the work necessary to see the success they crave. “We will do the work for you” is a myth, or extremely rare at best so don’t fall for it! The most important thing you can do is look for the RIGHT opportunity in the niche that you have the MOST passion for. If there isn’t one, perhaps you could design and build that opportunity yourself. There are courses out there that can help you do just that. There are so many ways to research with the resources available to us. It’s vital that you know what you want FIRST. You avoid the danger of the half hearted approach when you are fully committed to making something work. Yes, you may have to learn new skills. Until you accept that it’s YOU that makes things happen and are aware that blame is just another excuse for your own inaction, you will never move forward. Think about what you say to yourself and others. Is it right to state that something “doesn’t work” when there are several people making a LOT of money from it? The most ethical marketers share what they are doing to earn that money in paid for courses or sometimes for free if you’re a part of a network marketing team. It’s up to you to ask questions if you don’t understand what you have to do so you can be successful too. Of course, there are occasions where certain tasks don’t suit certain people. If you don’t “fit” in a particular system, you have not failed. You have found out that the system is not the right one for you. To know this, you have to do the work. Edison succeeded in making the light bulb by means of finding out what didn’t work. He eventually found what did and it grew from there. Without that determination and passion to achieve, we may not have had the advances in lighting technology we have now. They could have taken longer. Don’t give up your dream. Know what you want to do and where your passion is and you will achieve the success you crave. Settling for less than your true desire can lead to a half hearted approach that can prevent you starting on the right foot, or worst still, guarantee failure and dissolution and the fatal “blame culture”. Reverberating to a different place and time, what remains of these great docks and relics from the shipbuilding era, lie abandoned and detached from the city; economic conditions and inaction have until recently spared it from the risk of being over developed as so often happens to land where profit calculations determine the highest number of dwellings that can be fitted onto a site. Nature has taken hold, and a vast expansive wilderness, remains fragile and disconnected from the city and the river to which it belongs. The City Development plan intends the land to be used for approx 700-800 homes most of which are owner occupied, which could be seriously over developing the site, offering little to the existing community in Govan, not least to mention further removal of Govan's cultural heritage in the wake of the cranes being removed from its skyline. An appropriate form of housing may well be a welcome addition to the area and encourage a high quality, and imaginative environment, however despite being in private ownership, there is room for more than purely housing on this site; its strategic riverside location is ideal for Govan and the wider city to enjoy. Somewhere for Glasgow to be proud of and that allows the city to breathe. Hopefully sense will prevail and a huge asset to the city in terms of heritage, open space and potential for expanding on community facilities and creative regeneration in Govan will be recognised. I can imagine an urban park, a gateway into Govan, an imaginative and creative open public space that connects the city to nature and to its past, opening up the area to new vistas, encouraging new activity and an environment that reinterprets heritage with water side development, new lighting, landscape and public art. The creative activity, networking and collaboration between individuals, grassroot organisations, and development agencies has created rich dialogue re development proposals, and it would be a great testament to Glasgow and Govan's industrial legacy if the land provides a stage and platform for creative activity to harness ideas in collaboration with required needs within the community. There’s something very special about this place; questions need to be asked over what is appropriate for its future. The neglect and lack of maintenance that its current situation presents is not purely remedied by building houses alone. Its tranquility is part of its attraction - at odds with a heavy industrial past and yet disheartening as this space should not lie vacant and unsafe. Glasgow deserves more. As an integral symbol of the industrial grounds on which the city grew, its people should be able to connect with and enjoy this place, have a voice in its future and trust that the city will act in their interests. A new central and accessible landscape to confront the past and look forward would be a brave and tremendous insertion into the city.
Current housing proposals put forward by the site's owners include a process to consult with the wider public ( starting with a drop in exhibition March 4th ) with commitment being shown to developing additional ideas and open space within the development. These meetings should come at the start of any process for a site and hopefully a willingness to listen and modify proposals will be shown www.facebook.com/GravingDocks2017/

The Korean War Veterans Memorial was authorized by Public Law 99-572 on Oct. 28, 1986 "…to honor members of the United States Armed Forces who served in the Korean War, particularly those who were killed in action, are still missing inaction, or were held as prisoners of war." The law established an advisory board of 12 veterans appointed by the president to coordinate all aspects of the memorial’s construction. The site is located adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial directly across the reflecting pool from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The American Battle Monuments Commission managed the project and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provided assistance. The architect of record is Cooper Lecky Architects. President Bill Clinton and South Korean President Kim Young Sam dedicated the memorial on July 27, 1995. Since the dedication several modifications have been incorporated: a kiosk to provide shelter for National Park Service personnel and a computer system with data housing the "Honor Role," which was accessible to the public. Correcting accessibility issues and replacement of the lighting in the statuary and along the mural wall with a state-of-the-art fiber optic system were required. Reconstruction of the pool and tree grove by the National Park Service and Corps of Engineers to improve tree maintenance and operate the reflecting pool was completed in July 1999. The overall cost for the design and construction of the memorial and kiosk was $16.5 million.
Statues:
There are 19 statues sculpted by Frank Gaylord of Barre, Vt., and cast by Tallix Foundries of Beacon, N.Y. They are approximately 7’3" tall, heroic scale and consist of 14 Army, 3 Marines, 1 Navy, 1 Air Force. They represent an ethnic cross section of America with 12 Caucasian, 3 African American, 2 Hispanic, 1 Oriental, 1 Indian (Native American).
The juniper bushes are meant to be symbolic of the rough terrain encountered in Korea, and the granite stripes of the obstacles overcome in war. The Marines in column have the helmet chin straps fastened and helmet covers. Three of the Army statues are wearing paratrooper boots and all equipment is authentic from the Korean War era (when the war started most of the equipment was WWII issue).
Three of the statues are in the woods, so if you are at the flagpole looking through the troops, you can't tell how many there are, and could be legions emerging from the woods. The statues are made of stainless steel, a reflective material that when seen in bright sunlight causes the figures to come to life. The blowing ponchos give motion to the column, so you can feel them walking up the hill with the cold winter wind at their backs, talking to one another. At nighttime the fronts of the statues are illuminated with a special white light; the finer details of the sculpture are clearly seen and the ghosts appear.

Rally against Turkish attacks against Kurds fighting Islamic State
The Kurdish peoples are very much a forgotten people in the middle-east being one of those cultures that stretches across national borders in the region. Kurdish people live in and form a majority in south eastern Turkey, Northern Iraq, Northern Syria, and western Iran.
The Kurdish militias have been a progressive force in the region, and are in conflict with Islamic State. Turkey has abrogated a ceasfire against the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), and has launched military attacks against Kurdish fighters and people, and arrests within Turkey. Australia has played politics by supporting the Turkish Government in listing the PKK as a terrorist organisation, while there is no threat to Australia.
This rally was held in Federation Square Saturday 29 August 2015
"Turkish state deliberately targeting Kurds and assisting ISIL"
Solicitor:"The PKK and YPG are our de facto allies against Islamic State, So why is Australian Government listing PKK as a terrorist organisation?"
"We have to break the silence on what is happening in Kurdistan" said Cr Sue Bolton.
Tim Gordon from Geelong Trades Hall: message of solidarity and support for Kurdish struggling for peace and self-determination. Together we can win.
The issues of freedom and self-determination for Kurdish people and Kurdistan are complex, but should not be denied.

In Belgium a few days ago in Friends of The Earth launched a video, making part of "The Big Ask" campaign. Belgium wouldn't be Belgium, if the video wouldn't be available in Dutch and in English. Explained by a child. Take 5 minutes to listen! (Not living in Belgium? Look for The Big Ask campaign in your country.)
On December 6th worldwide the next Global Day of Action with international demonstrations on climate change will be held. What is planned in your country?
