Italien / Belluno - Lago di Sorapiss und Dito di Dio

Sorapiss, also referred to as Sorapis or Punta Sorapiss, is a mountain in the Dolomites within the Veneto region of northern Italy. Situated in the comune of Cortina d'Ampezzo, it has an elevation of 3,205 metres (10,515 ft). In its vicinity is a mountain pass of the same name, as well as Sorapiss Lake (Lago di Sorapiss), at the foot of the mountain. The mountain range is part of the "Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites".

Description

Sorapiss, with its huge perpendicular faces, forms part of the mountainous backdrop to the resort town of Cortina, situated roughly 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) to the southeast of the town. The limestone dolomite formations, which are irregular, rugged and sharp-edged peaks, are part of the Eastern Alps. The Cristallo group lies to the north past the Passo Tre Croci, and its southern neighbour is the Antelao. A path to Sorapiss starts at Passo Tre Croci and continues along an easy slope, reaching the refuge at the base of the Sorapiss range, close to Lago di Sorapiss, which is at an elevation of 1,923 metres (6,309 ft).

The elevation of Sorapiss is 3,205 metres (10,515 ft). The mountain has three ridges: a central ridge, a southern ridge, which is the part of the mountain that can be seen from Cortina, and, beyond a high pass and little to the west, a northern ridge that culminates in the skiing area of Mount Faloria. There are three glaciers on the mountain's slopes, although these have been melting considerably in recent years. Lago Sorapiss, at the foot of the mountain, is a glacial lake at an elevation 1,925 metres (6,316 ft).

History

There are three refuges in the vicinity: Rifugio Tondi di Faloria at 2,327 metres (7,635 ft), Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli at 1,926 metres (6,319 ft) and Rifugio San Marco. Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli was built by Austrians in 1891 on the banks of Lago di Sorapiss. In 1895 it was destroyed by an avalanche, but was rebuilt the following year in a more sheltered spot. At the end of World War I in 1918, Cortina d'Ampezzo became part of the Kingdom of Italy (1918) and the refuge became the property of the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) of Venice. In 1924, thanks to a donation by Cesare Luigi Luzzati, a new refuge was built.[10] A fire destroyed it completely in 1959, and it was again reconstructed; the current shelter was opened on 18 September 1966 and was named after the president of the CAI of Venice, Alfonso Vandelli.

Paul Grohmann made the first ascent of the mountain in September 1864, taking 8 hours and 30 minutes. There are at least two routes to the summit: the Grohmann-Weg, which crosses the mountain's west flank, joining the S. Vito route near the summit, and the Muller-Weg, which traverses the east glacier and ascends direct over the precipices on the northeast side.

Flora

The flora on Sorapiss includes Festucetum pulchellae (slopes), Euphrasio-Globularietum (base), and Drabetum hoppeanae (on the range).

Legend

There is a legend associated with the name of Sorapiss, which in local dialect means "above the waterfall". A "peace-loving" king named Sorapiss turned himself into a rocky mountain during a course of unexpected events. A witch had bewitched the king's impulsive daughter Misurina by promising her a magical mirror as a reward for providing shade to her house. This was honoured by her doting father, who turned himself into a mountain. At a later date, Misurina, demonstrating a sense of gratitude towards her father, cried and shed tears which formed the Lago di Sorapiss at the foot of the large cliff of Sorapiss, the immobilized form of her father.

Lago di Sorapiss (Italian: Lago di Sorapiss; German: Sorapissee) is a lake in the mountain range Sorapiss in the Dolomites, province of Belluno, c. 12 km away from Cortina d'Ampezzo. The lake has an altitude of 1,925 metres (6,316 ft.) above sea level.

The strong turquoise color is dust from the glacier. The lake can only be reached by foot or by helicopter. The hiking trail has a length of 10.5 km and takes 1.5 hours one way starting from Passo tre Croci.

#2 "Enjoy times when you shoot impulsively and photograph mindlessly. The edit might reveal more than you think." - Jack Simon

She covers her shame begging on the path to Taragadh, and mind you it is insanely dry and hot ..and she will sit there for hours as devotees going upwards to the Chilla of Ghaus Pak or the Dargah at Taragadh will throw her a few coins.

This is the sad part of existence , he children cluster around her and without throwing doubts on her poverty , where is her husband.I dd not ask her most of the beggars I shot in Mumbai at Bandra where I stay are forced into beggary by their husbands in most cases.

And so you know how the hijab saves her from ignominy and degradation.

And I am really upset by a news in Times of India , Hands chopped off for Prophet insult by Muslim fanatics in Kerala of a college lecturer accusing him of defaming the Holy Prophet.

And Kerala the most literate and Gods own country.. Shame.

The other sad news was the fall of a six year old boy from a luxury hotel in Juhu.. Saddening.

Well this is the last segment of this memory card I have place about 99 pictures for uploading , another card remains before my Ajmer travelogue in Sufi hinterland comes to an end.

Taragadh was introspection of street pain..though it is a hilly trail, I shot it as a street photographer .

Street photography is an impulsive piece of madness you shoot with your inner eye and let the camera do the rest.

Using a digital camera makes it much easier and as much as I liked shoting film and slide I could never do it again my world is larger than 35 frames of Film.

I post everything I shoot only the dark black duds I remove.

I dont mess my pictures with cropping nor do I re-size them..they come hot and burning like loaves from the furnace of life.

And I am cooped up at home ., earlier Bandhs I took my camera to shoot the shut shops and the lonely streets , but my world is a world of people I shoot humanity and would not be able to shoot a blank canvas..

Of course for the beggar there is no Bandh at all.

Without any political overviews or influence I am apolitical by nature but yes..

I support the Bandh as the poor Mans suffering the rock spiraling prices is a silent way of eliminating him completely..driving him away from Mumbai..making it only the rich mans paradise.

I left this post incomplete and ran down as I saw BJP protesters running beneath my house to shoot the events..arrest of Advocate Ashish Shelar BJP leader and I walked towards the Sea Link to shoot protesters burning tyres and shouting slogans.

A little paddle in a the warm late afternoon slanted rays on my pond in South Stukely

This gorgeous cedar strip canoe was a gift I received from my Francine my x wife and best friends a few years back.

The Canoe is a work of art. You are not Canadian if you have not made love in a cedar strip. I am pure unadulterated ...

The bow and stern decks are made of African Lace Wood.

Also have the matching lace wood paddle. The Bow & Stern seats are made of rosewood as are the thwarts ...

The planking and canvas are nailed with 3500 brass tacks..

The big question Red or Green ... My first instinct was red, after a month long internal debate ... I settled with green . Listened impulsively to the little voice inside...

I am glad I did. It just blends in with nature. Oh yeah 27 coats of varnish adorn that forest green paint. My pride and joy.

Of course it is wonderful to paint with a bristle brush. At the moment I am more expressionist, more impulsive with a clear brushstroke. This fits well with the season, which suddenly awoke recently.

Today's Random Fact

I have this need for things to not get stagnant. Ever since I was large enough to make it happen, I have moved the furniture around at a whim. I can remember doing so when I was as young as 10. Just last week, this room (which is the other end of yesterday's room with the dining room table in it) was where my living room couch was (we saw that TWO days ago) -- I just got this need to swap the two rooms out. It mixes it up and makes me feel like I'm living somewhere new. It's the impulsive risk-taker in me clamoring to get out.

callous lack of empathypsychopath test pclr

please score yourself 0 1 2 3 on each of the 20 items and record your score as a comment on the total score image

The PCL-R is a clinical rating scale (rated by a psychologist or other professional) of 20 items. Each of the items in the PCL-R is scored on a three-point scale according to specific criteria through file information and a semi-structured interview. A value of 0 is assigned if the item does not apply, 1 if it applies somewhat, and 2 if it fully applies. In addition to lifestyle and criminal behavior the checklist assesses glib and superficial charm, grandiosity, need for stimulation, pathological lying, conning and manipulating, lack of remorse, callousness, poor behavioral controls, impulsivity, irresponsibility, failure to accept responsibility for one's own actions and so forth. The scores are used to predict risk for criminal re-offence and probability of rehabilitation.

The current edition of the PCL-R officially lists four factors (1.a, 1.b, 2.a, and 2.b), which summarize the 20 assessed areas via factor analysis. The previous edition of the PCL-R[5] listed two factors. Factor 1 is labelled "selfish, callous and remorseless use of others". Factor 2 is labelled as "chronically unstable, antisocial and socially deviant lifestyle". There is a high risk of recidivism and currently small likelihood of rehabilitation for those who are labelled as having "psychopathy" on the basis of the PCL-R ratings in the manual for the test, although treatment research is ongoing.

PCL-R Factors 1a and 1b are correlated with narcissistic personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. They are associated with extraversion and positive affect. Factor 1, the so-called core personality traits of psychopathy, may even be beneficial for the psychopath (in terms of nondeviant social functioning).

PCL-R Factors 2a and 2b are particularly strongly correlated to antisocial personality disorder and criminality and are associated with reactive anger, criminality, and impulsive violence. The target group for the PCL-R is convicted criminals. The quality of ratings may depend on how much background information is available and whether the person rated is honest and forthright.

[edit] The two factorsFactor 1: Personality "Aggressive narcissism"

Glibness/superficial charm

Grandiose sense of self-worth

Pathological lying

Cunning/manipulative

Lack of remorse or guilt

Shallow affect (genuine emotion is short-lived and egocentric)

Callousness; lack of empathy

Failure to accept responsibility for own actions

Factor 2: Case history "Socially deviant lifestyle".

Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom

Parasitic lifestyle

Poor behavioral control

Lack of realistic long-term goals

Impulsivity

Irresponsibility

Juvenile delinquency

Early behavior problems

Revocation of conditional release

Traits not correlated with either factor

Promiscuous sexual behavior

Many short-term marital relationships

Criminal versatility

Acquired behavioural sociopathy/sociological conditioning (Item 21: a newly identified trait i.e. a person relying on sociological strategies and tricks to deceive)

Early factor analysis of the PCL-R indicated it consisted of two factors. Factor 1 captures traits dealing with the interpersonal and affective deficits of psychopathy (e.g. shallow affect, superficial charm, manipulativeness, lack of empathy) whereas Factor 2 dealt with symptoms relating to antisocial behaviour (e.g. criminal versatility, impulsiveness, irresponsibility, poor behaviour controls, juvenile delinquency).

The two factors have been found by those following this theory to display different correlates. Factor 1 has been correlated with narcissistic personality disorder, low anxiety, low empathy, low stress reaction and low suicide risk but high scores on scales of achievement and well-being. In addition, the use of item response theory analysis of female offender PCL-R scores indicates factor 1 items are more important in measuring and generalizing the construct of psychopathy in women than factor 2 items.

In contrast, Factor 2 was found to be related to antisocial personality disorder, social deviance, sensation seeking, low socio-economic status[6] and high risk of suicide. The two factors are nonetheless highly correlated and there are strong indications they do result from a single underlying disorder. However, research has failed to replicate the two-factor model in female samples.

Recent statistical analysis using confirmatory factor analysis by Cooke and Michie indicated a three-factor structure, with those items from factor 2 strictly relating to antisocial behaviour (criminal versatility, juvenile delinquency, revocation of conditional release, early behavioural problems and poor behavioural controls) removed from the final model. The remaining items are divided into three factors: Arrogant and Deceitful Interpersonal Style, Deficient Affective Experience and Impulsive and Irresponsible Behavioural Style.

In the most recent edition of the PCL-R, Hare adds a fourth antisocial behaviour factor, consisting of those Factor 2 items excluded in the previous model. Again, these models are presumed to be hierarchical with a single unified psychopathy disorder underlying the distinct but correlated factors.

The Cooke & Michie hierarchical ‘three’-factor model has severe statistical problems—i.e., it actually contains ten factors and results in impossible parameters (negative variances)—as well as conceptual problems. Hare and colleagues have published detailed critiques of the Cooke & Michie model. New evidence, across a range of samples and diverse measures, now supports a four-factor model of the psychopathy construct,] which represents the Interpersonal, Affective, Lifestyle, and overt Antisocial features of the personality disorder.

Diagnostic criteria and PCL-R assessmentPsychopathy is most commonly assessed with the PCL-R, which is a clinical rating scale with 20 items. Each of the items in the PCL-R is scored on a three-point (0, 1, 2) scale according to two factors. PCL-R Factor 2 is associated with reactive anger, anxiety, increased risk of suicide, criminality, and impulsive violence.

PCL-R Factor 1, in contrast, is associated with extraversion and positive affect. Factor 1, the so-called core personality traits of psychopathy, may even be beneficial for the psychopath (in terms of nondeviant social functioning). A psychopath will score high on both factors, whereas someone with APD will score high only on Factor 2.

Both case history and a semi-structured interview are used in the analysis.

Another quick shot an upload today as I'm racing the clock to post before my company shows up very shortly!

Came home from work and noticed were out and fluttering around my neighbour's tree so I grabbed my almost dead camera and took a couple shot.

Luckily I like the way this turned out so a quick photo was accomplished.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

The story goes that long ago--maybe two or three hundred years ago--a newly wed couple came to Charleston, SC, to make their new home. Sadly, they chose a spot for their plantation that Indians had long used as hunting ground. The Indians were not violent sorts, as a rule, but they wanted to make their claim dramatic, and so they scalped the bride and flung her long curly hair up onto the branches of a live oak tree, which had the intended effect of frightening the young couple enough so that they promptly went elsewhere. What the Indians had not expected, however, was that the bride's long curly hair, once caught in the branches of the tree, would not only stay there but would also spread to other branches, other trees, and, in time, turn gray. Nowadays, when the moon is full, if you stand beneath one of these festooned trees and listen carefully, you can hear the soft moan of the bride, the same moan that escaped her lips in the moment she was deprived of her beautiful long hair, which never grew back as full and lush as it had been, so that the rest of her life, which was long and prosperous--for her husband dealt shrewdly in deerhides, tea, and, later, rice--she never appeared in public unless in a wig. It was a beautiful wig, made of human hair--in fact the hair of a Cherokee maiden who had impulsively traded it to an itinerant merchant for a pair of shoes with Queen Anne heels--and nobody was ever the wiser.

When you get a text at 10:30AM saying, "yooo I'm bored come to Hagerstown" and you do some mathematics to realize it'll be around noon by time you get there...the motivation is slim. However with nothing better to do and a fairly good train line up, the impulsive decision was made. The next 7 hours of shooting would consist of lots of traffic, odd chases, misses, and above all fighting light that even the best would say is workable. So, while watching an EB manifest pass, I was looking for cool cars to pan. Luckily an old Bayline centerbeam was sticking out like a sore thumb. so here she is, looking worse for wear but still rolling just fine. In the back is a WB stack train, I believe I135.

Call me impulsive, but sometimes I plan trips based only on a single photo of a place. The first time I did this I visited L'ile de la Reunion in the middle of the Indian Ocean, all because of this amazing photo by Yann Arthus Bertrand. More recently I decided to backpack through Coyote Gulch, Utah, thanks to a spectacular shot by Michael Anderson. The Gulch did not disappoint: soaring walls, massive amphitheaters, gigantic rock arches, and even a waterfall or two. Truly a southwest paradise.

In Photoshop:

This has got to be one of the most photoshop-heavy images I've ever produced and it's taken me 5 months of fiddling to process it in a way that I like. Since May when I took this I've been experimenting with some new techniques, many of which are incorporated into this image. Here's the full run-down, starting with the lowest layers.

- Background layer from 1/6 sec exposure as baseline image

- Selective sharpening layer for rocks, trees, and canyon walls

- Empty layer set to "color" blend mode, some greens painted in over the top of a few dead branches

- Minor saturation bump to everything except the canyon walls

- Color balance to add a teensy magenta hue

- Dodge and Burn layer set to "soft light" blend mode, rocks and canyon walls burned, tree leaves and water channels dodged in patches to create mottling

- S-curves adjustment applied only to dodge/burn layer in order to enhance it

- Tiff file from long exposure layered on here, masked to show only the waterfalls and stream channel

- Dodge/burn layer, soft light blend mode. Waterfalls and water channels dodged, stream bed heavily burned

- Curves adjustment to only this dodge/burn layer to enhance it

- Major saturation reduction of the stream bed

- Empty layer set to color blend mode, orange tones painted in over the lower section of the splash in the lower left because there was too much white too close to the edge of the frame

- This same area burned via a soft light layer in order to match the dark tonality of the stream bed

- Curves adjustment to tree leaves only to get the highlights to pop a little more

- "Fairy dust" layer: high-radius gaussian blur, high contrast layer set to low opacity for dreamy look. A Marc Adamus technique, Ryan Dyar lingo.

- Whew, that's it!

Went to Haarlem today with Emiel, thought I had a meeting there, but I think there was some miscommunication. So we went there together and did a little shopping, had lunch, and visit Inez and Nick (remember me holding their baby girl? Well now there's one with Emiel holding her, I MELTED!) It was an impulsive action meeting them. Emiel and I had a real good conversation about doing more together, more impulsive things. Most of the time one of us sais no to the other's plans. Played a little with poladroid, I loooove it :D

The Imagine Van Gogh Exhibition at the Convention Centre in Vancouver is an amazing audiovisual experience (Image Totale).

This one taken with my cell phone shows the projection on a huge wall screen and on the floor providing a surreal image.

Most of the exhibition paintings were chosen from his last two years of life 1888-1890 when he lived in Arles, in the south of France. Van Gogh tragically died by suicide at the age of 37.

www.imagine-vangogh.com/the-exhibition/

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty.

Born into an upper-middle-class family, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet, and thoughtful. As a young man he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. He turned to religion and spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. He drifted in ill health and solitude before taking up painting in 1881, having moved back home with his parents. His younger brother Theo supported him financially, and the two kept a long correspondence by letter. His early works, mostly still lifes and depictions of peasant labourers, contain few signs of the vivid colour that distinguished his later work. In 1886, he moved to Paris, where he met members of the avant-garde, including Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, who were reacting against the Impressionist sensibility. As his work developed he created a new approach to still lifes and local landscapes. His paintings grew brighter in colour as he developed a style that became fully realised during his stay in Arles in the south of France in 1888. During this period he broadened his subject matter to include series of olive trees, wheat fields and sunflowers.

Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions and though he worried about his mental stability, he often neglected his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. His friendship with Gauguin ended after a confrontation with a razor when, in a rage, he severed part of his own left ear. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals, including a period at Saint-Rémy. After he discharged himself and moved to the Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, he came under the care of the homeopathic doctor Paul Gachet. His depression continued, and on 27 July 1890, Van Gogh is believed to have shot himself in the chest with a Lefaucheux revolver. He died from his injuries two days later.

Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime, and he was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide and exists in the public imagination as a misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge". His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and he is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.

When I asked Diconay beginning of April if she and Good Cross were able and willing to exhibit in May (instead of later in the year as we initially agreed), to fill the slot which had suddenly become available, I was so happy she said yes! However, Good Cross, Dico's SL partner was too busy RL, so Dico took it upon her to do the exhibition alone ... AND what a wonderful display it has become of sensual, high quality works in monochrome and color with a theme that will appeal to many:. tattoos in SL.

I sincerely hope Dico and Good Cross will return to Nitroglobus in the future with a shared exhibition; giving us something to look forward to.

A B O U T 'W H I T E C A N V A S':

Tattoos are jewelry for the skin.

People get them for many reasons: for attention, self-expression, artistic freedom, rebellion, a visual display of a personal narrative, reminders of spiritual/cultural traditions, sexual motivation, addiction, identification with a group or even drunken impulsiveness. Our current society craves individuality and self expression. And now many people wear their artistic expression.

Tattoos are especially interesting in the virtual world because of its lack of permanence on a virtual mesh body. But someone talented in the digital arts can really make it look surreal and beautiful.

To me tattoos represent creativity, sensuality and this is what I have hoped to achieve in this study. This exhibit is a study of second life tattoos and my interpretation of the work of some tattoo artists in SL.

This is the reason I call this exhibit a White Canvas, representing the bare skin on which will be imprinted memories, emotions and art.

I hope you take some joy from it.

Welcome to my head and heart.

In all of our three week trip through Italy from June 20th, 20 July 9th, 2022, this was just about the only time we saw any real rain. You may remember Europe was burning last year. We got a lucky break as we entered for Dolomites and stopped for lunch at Quinz, on Lago di Misurina. As we left to continue on towards Bozen, the rain stopped and started in fits, and clouds and fog seemed to emanate from the mountains in the background, which would appear temporarily, only to disappear in the fog a minute later. It was an unbelievable event to witness.

"Sorapiss, also referred to as Sorapis or Punta Sorapiss, is a mountain in the Dolomites within the Veneto region of northern Italy. Situated in the commune of Cortina d'Ampezzo, it has an elevation of 3,205 meters (10,515 ft). In its vicinity is a mountain pass of the same name, as well as Sorapiss Lake (Lago di Sorapiss), at the foot of the mountain. The mountain range is part of the "Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites."

Sorapiss, with its huge perpendicular faces, forms part of the mountainous backdrop to the resort town of Cortina, situated roughly 9 kilometers (5.6 mi) to the southeast of the town. The limestone dolomite formations, which are irregular, rugged and sharp-edged peaks, are part of the Eastern Alps. The Cristallo group lies to the north past the Passo Tre Croci, and its southern neighbor is the Antelao. A path to Sorapiss starts at Passo Tre Croci and continues along an easy slope, reaching the refuge at the base of the Sorapiss range, close to Lago di Sorapiss, which is at an elevation of 1,923 meters (6,309 ft).

The elevation of Sorapiss is 3,205 meters (10,515 ft). Lago Sorapiss, at the foot of the mountain, is a glacial lake at an elevation 1,925 meters (6,316 ft).

This was honored by her doting father, who turned himself into a mountain. At a later date, Misurina, demonstrating a sense of gratitude towards her father, cried and shed tears which formed the Lago di Sorapiss at the foot of the large cliff of Sorapiss, the immobilized form of her father" (Wikipedia).

On June 15, 1845, John Fremont, the Pathfinder, already renowned for mapping a route to the Columbia River and discovering Fremont Peak (Colorado), Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, Lake Tahoe, and Great Basin, set out from St. Louis with 60 men and scout Kit Carson to find the source of the Arkansas River. Instead upon reaching the river he promptly shot West to California, which he had visited on his previous expedition.

After months through the deserts of the Southwest, Fremont reached California to find it in the midst of chaos, with Californio José Castro having just overthrown the Mexico City-appointed governor and established himself as military comandante in Monterey, while his former subordinate Pío Pico, seized control of Southern California and began to oppose Castro. Into this rode Fremont, with his small but strong force of scouts, sharpshooters, scientists, frontiersmen and hunters, armed with the latest weaponry. Greeted frostily by Castro, Fremont was allowed to obtain provisions from the American Consul Thomas Larkin, but then ordered to leave. Instead, on March 4, 1846, Fremont led his force to a prominent hilltop known as Gabilian Peak overlooking San Juan Bautista, and built a log fort. Then with his men cheering on, Fremont raised an American flag, the first display of the flag over California.

Castro was not amused, and immediately raised a force of 300 with 3 cannon to drive back the Americans. Rightly fearing the powerful American rifles, Castro surrounded the hill but decided against attacking into the ambush Fremont had prepared. Instead he fired his cannons to warn the Pathfinder away. Meanwhile, frantic about Fremont's presence, Larkin wrote a letter suggesting that he leave. Things came to an end after three days on the peak, when a violent windstorm blew down the American flag. Fremont took the hint:

"Thinking I had remained as long as the occasion required, I took advantage of the accident to say to the men that this was an indication for us to move camp. . . "

Mediators from Castro arrived the next morning to smoldering fires as Fremont's force retreated back towards Oregon.

Ironically less than a month after the odd siege of Gabilian Peak (later renamed Fremont Peak in the Pathfinder's honor) was going on, war had finally broken out between the United States and Mexico. When news reached California, American settlers pre-empted an expulsion order and declared the Bear Flag Revolt . Still in Northern California, Fremont quickly brought back his exploration party and took command, creating the California Battalion.

Much has been discussed about Fremont's strange actions in Mexican California. While his record certainly exhibited impulsiveness, with war threatening in the horizon between the United States and Mexico it would have been foolish even for a hero like Fremont to move halfway across the continent just to try to start a war.

Many have suggested that in fact Fremont had secret orders from President James Polk to seize California the instant war broke out. Such orders are known to have been given to Commodore John Sloat and Consul Thomas Larkin. Perhaps, with the trouble of communication between overland travel, Fremont had ignited the spark too early, leading to him running off to await the proper signal two months later. Certainly President Polk had plausible deniability to opposition claims that he coveted annexing California: after all, the United States had taken over the region in response to the desire of the independent Bear Flaggers. As for Fremont, he was simply a rogue actor, one that would be court-martialed (but pardoned by Polk) for running afoul of occupation politics between Commodore Robert Stockton and Brig Gen Stephen Kearney.

Of course it is wonderful to paint with a bristle brush. At the moment I am more expressionist, more impulsive with a clear brushstroke. This fits well with the season, which suddenly awoke recently.

Here are some gods and goddesses from the pantheon of Greek myth:

• Icarus, an impulsive flyer

• Achilles, an invulnerable warrior

• The Minotaur, a savage monster

• Theseus, a brave hero

• Marigold, an unfortunate daughter

• Midas, an unhappy father

• Circe, a cunning sorceress

In psychology, there is one type of mental disorder - Pyromania. Pyromania is a disorder of impulsive behavior, expressed in arson and fire monitoring. To date, this syndrome has not been fully studied. Various cases of Pyromania are the subject of research in psychiatry. Pyro, who watch the fire and experience the joy, satisfaction and relief. Besides being a phenomenal photographer, my Dad is an incredibly talented guitarist. I grew up hearing songs like Sunshine on My Shoulders and Rocky Mountain High. My dad used to love to take us camping as kids. Looking back I have no idea how my parents had the energy to pack up NINE kids in the van and go TENT camping. for fun?! but they did... I have the fondest of memories, so dear and nostalgic to my heart that even listening to John Denver brings tears to my eyes - I can close my eyes and picture my Dad sitting at the campfire, guitar in his lap, the sounds of laughter and busy chatter around me, the smell of the smoke curing 'round my shoulders like a throw blanket on a chilly night. The sun is still out but it is darker than it should be because the sun is hidden behind the forests of trees and is has sunk into the shadow of the mountain. My Dad's eyes are focused on the fire really without seeing though as he sings and plays his music. I remember him going through a few of the Joh Denver classics, specifically Sunshine on my Shoulders. All is safe, all is well in my flashback to being a child sitting at the fire. I was loved, I was surrounded by all of the things I loved best, set up against the backdrop of the fierce yet oddly comforting mountains.

I miss this place, my beautiful Colorado. But even if I were to go back it wouldn't be the same - would it?

There are people who have carved and imprinted memories with me in those mountains who are no longer here, life is different, I am different and I know this is how it must be. Although at times I impulsively wish it wasn't so. But it is so - and there are many things about present life that bring me joy and happiness including my own children and the memories we have made and will make together. I'll stop rambling for tonight and leave you with a few of my favorite parts of Rocky Mountain High (I know many of you know and love John Denver and probably know the words better than I ;)

Thank you for listening to me, I love you all xx

-- Not anything special, but the woman who must be obeyed said to post this shot. Had this lens 15 years ago, and then again this summer in an impulsive act, and now reaching the same conclusion about it as before -- a very good lens but nothing special about it. Just sharp and contrasty, even wide open, but thats it. For B&W I tend to gravitate to the flawed, character lenses. Ha, ha, good metaphor for the world we live in. Maybe it's better suited for color film. And I don't especially like the ergo; it's small and thin for a "modern" f/1.4 aspherical, but I like lenses that are either very small and petite, or big enough to get a grip on, like my Big Bertha Voigtlander 35/1..2. Ha, ha, hackneyed, uncreative and pathetic to name a lens, but it fits. Ok, I'll end this stream of conscious there.

Mindfulness in cooking. The mise en place, a process invented by the chef, Escoffier. It helps ton organize and make cooking more efficient in every way. Plan, prepare, execute, reflect. It's so simple that not many people appear to do it.

ADHD is renowned for impulsive behavior. The mise en place when applied to daily life is a great tool to use.

Working retail as I do, I deal with a lot of different types of customers, most of those I sell cameras to though are students, relative newcomers when it comes to purchasing cameras. As such, a lot of what I do over the counter involves educating as well as selling. Or put another way, re-educating.

See, many people operate under a fair number of misconceptions when it comes to photography, and I want to take a bit of time tonight to combat one of them in particular; in order to take professional quality photographs you need professional quality cameras.

Frankly, if the person selling you a camera tells you this, it really means they are just trying to sell you something more expensive, that and they are probably paid on commission. And they would probably auction off a family member for the right price.

I know, many you already realize this is bogus thinking, nonetheless many of us succumb to it. There is something reassuring in knowing your camera has a price tag to rival your social security number. I mean, come on, if you have to skip two mortgage payments how can that camera NOT be good right? Well chances are it is a good camera. Doesn't mean it is the right camera for you though.

And I guess it all depends on how we define good. Oh boy, that is a topic that requires about three hours and four beers...

I always stress that it is how you USE the camera, not the camera itself that makes the most difference and I stand by that. If I sound like a broken record at times, it is merely because it is true and a very valuable lesson to learn. It is one of the things I try to demonstrate with my stream. I shoot five main cameras, though I cycle in others here and there. My main 35mm is my Nikon FM2n. In the store I work at, this camera costs $200 in perfect working order with a warranty. That $200 buys me a camera that will last for decades, will cost about $120 to refurbish when it wears out every 10-15 years or so and will stay in the family my entire life unless I drop it in the ocean as I seem to be more than capable of doing. Plus it takes images that are incredibly sharp and can be printed as large as 24x36 with a fairly high degree of quality. Sure I could have bought an F3 ($300-400), an F4 ($400), an F5 ($500) or an F6 ($1000 or more). Heck the F6 is the latest and greatest film camera out there. It does everything except sweep the kitchen floor. I have shot it, everytime you press the shutter it sounds like the camera is silkily whispering "damn fine shot". Then again, with the same lenses it will take the exact same quality image as my FM2. And sure, it is whiz-bang, but then again pretty much every automatic feature on cameras these days can be duplicated manually. These cameras don't allow you to do things less expensive and sophisticated cameras won't, they generally just tend to make those things quicker and easier. That is what all that extra money tends to buy you, speed and convenience, not necessarily better quality. More on that possibly in a bit.

My second camera, also my main landscape camera these days, is my Pentax 67. This was once a top of the line medium format camera. It produces large 6x7cm negatives with detail and resolution that still blow my mind. I would even go so far as to say it produces a higher resolution, sharper image than all but the most expensive of digital cameras can compete with. It also cost me $200. I am on my third one due to two unfortunate accidents. I have spent less than $700 combined on all three.

My third is my pinhole, brand new for $250. For those who are familiar with my pinhole images, not much more needs to be said. For those who are not, it is an incredibly interesting camera that captures a perspective unlike most other photography. All without the benefit of a lens, auto-focus, a meter of any kind, not a single gear, wire or circuit. It scoffs if you mention LCD in fact.

My fourth, which this image was taken with, is my Holga. $25. No, I am not missing a zero. It is a plastic toy camera that retails for about $25. Certainly not a perfect camera, but then again is there such a thing? No, there isn't. And if the person behind the counter tells you there is, well see the fourth paragraph above. I was down in Yosemite last year browsing the Ansel Adams gallery in the park, and there is a piece by a photographer named Ted Orland. It is an amazing work and though I do not remember the price on it, it was a lot and well worth it. It was taken with a holga.

My fifth is my Leica M3, which is a contradiction to the point I am trying to make, that camera sold for about $700. Though these days, that is about average for most DSLRs. Though honestly it is more of a specialty camera for me and of all the cameras listed above, is one of the ones that gets used the least.

I am not trying to trumpet my nifty frugalness or impress upon you my ability to not irrationally and impulsively spend my camera budget. The point I am trying to make is that it has always been, and always will be good photographers behind cameras that make good images. Note I have not attached any adjective to cameras, because none needs to be. To be blunt, a photographer is either skilled at what they do, or they are not, or they are somewhere in between hopefully moving towards the former and not the latter. A camera will not change this, though it may seem like it does. And true, cameras can help us see differently, they can help us take different pictures, but that is all they do at the most. Help. We take the pictures, good or bad, and it can be done on all cameras, expensive or not.

Buying the best camera is very very very rarely buying the more expensive camera. Rather it is a moderately tricky process of figuring out what you want to do as a photographer and buying the camera that is the best fit. Want to take odd, alternative artsy photos? Buy a holga, a lomo or a fish eye. Photojournalism? Then you probably want a rugged DSLR. Landscape with the intent to make murals? Medium or large format. Do you want something lightweight? You will want to buy a plastic camera (which will also break on you in a matter of a few years). Do you prefer a heavy and rugged camera for backpacking? Go with one of the SLRs of the 60s or 70s like a Minolta SRT or Pentax K1000. Want to try out medium format on a budget? Get a twin lens. A top notch Yashica Mat 124G can be found for $250 or less.

There are options, sometimes a seemingly overwhelming number of them. Start with yourself. Figure out what you need in a camera (much less than you might think). Plan how and where you will use a camera. Make a list and stick to it. Otherwise you are just going to be paying for a number of features you never actually get around to using. Expensive is not always the answer, but then again neither is cheap. It really revolves around your needs. You are matching a camera to yourself, not the other way around.

Anyway, hope that is somewhat intelligible. And hope you enjoy the photo. I find it interesting to compare the two images, both medium format, but one shot through a high end glass lens, the other a toy plastic camera. I like them both, a lot. And both are very different images taken from almost the exact same spot. That too is the beauty of different cameras, they allow photographers to realize different visions. Just remember, photography begins and ends with living, breathing human beings. Cameras are just means to that end.

Monte Antelao (Cadorino dialect: Nantelòu) is the highest mountain in the eastern Dolomites (a section of the Alps) in northeastern Italy, southeast of the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the region of Cadore. The Monte Antelao is an ultra-prominent peak (Ultra).

It is known as the "King of the Dolomites" (- Marmolada, the highest of all the Dolomites, is the "Queen" although composed mostly of limestones). As the highest pinnacle of the eastern Dolomites, the Antelao is not part of a closed massif or a high plateau, but a single, mighty rock pyramid. Like many Dolomite peaks, Antelao is steep, rocky, and pointed; it also sits close to the edge of the Dolomite uplift and so has dramatic drops to the nearby valleys. When the weather is good, Monte Antelao is clearly visible from Trieste on the Adriatic Sea.

The summit was reached for the first time in 1850 by the hunter Matteo Ossi from San Vito, who then accompanied the mountaineer Paul Grohmann to the summit in 1863.

The easiest route is from the north, known as the "Laste", a steep, narrow ridge. It involves a good deal of exposure, and a few short technical sections, such as a chimney, protected by cables. There is a refuge, the Rifugio Galassi, which is located below the Forcella Piccola in the upper Val d'Oten.

*MOC SHOWCASE video on YouTube:*

www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNw3CqEtXrY&feature=youtu.be

Hey guys,

finally it is august and I received my LEGO STAR WARS set order with the two Obi-Wan Kenobi sets, which I needed for my upcoming creations. The first MOC is a bit bigger, because it shows the arrival of the sith inquisitors on the desert planet Tatooine.

Here is the background story:

[...]Ten years later, the inhabitants of the city of Mos Eisley on the desert world of Tatooine are alerted by the arrival of a black, menacing Imperial shuttle. Several Inquisitors, including the Grand Inquisitor, the Fifth Brother, and the Third Sister disembark from the shuttle. They walk into a saloon and approach the manager, asking if he knows who they are—Jedi hunters. The Grand Inquisitor tells the manager they are investigating rumors of a Jedi hiding in this particular saloon, musing whether the Jedi fugitive is a wanderer who attends to people in need, and asks whether the Jedi would help the manager and risk exposure or hide. The Third Sister hurls a knife at the manager but it is stopped by a young man motioning with the Force. The Inquisitorius stop the man from fleeing and The Grand Inquisitor orders his underlings to prepare the prisoner for interrogation. [...]

Greetings Kevin

Hi Leute,

"Give every day

the chance to become

the most beutiful day

in your life"

[Mark Twain]

Vincent Willem van Gogh

30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His suicide at 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty.

Born into an upper-middle-class family, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet and thoughtful. As a young man he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. He turned to religion, and spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. He drifted in ill health and solitude before taking up painting in 1881, having moved back home with his parents. His younger brother Theo supported him financially, and the two kept up a long correspondence by letter.

The day the snow came to settle and recall

all the forgotten Winter weeks

snowless days stacked upon a Spring drawn to a crawl

in this likelihood of ice touching one's cheeks

is a strain of Wintry art upon a frieze of Spring

spreading across ornamented valley

a vast room with a view of forsaken writing

in one ionic sweep a curtain draws forth the mystery

a swathe of impulsive system

is the nature of the weather of the very time we live

fragile in the extremity of season's exercised freedom

as much anthemic as it is native

burning accustomed to the cold at large

one swallow doesn't make a Summer gulp -

at the mighty North wind's snow to readily discharge

over such unsuspecting souls as to be human pulp

in life

comes death

in death,

comes the deeper, deeper

appreciation of the life

we hope to live.

This is my first visit to this Lighthouse, which honestly surprises me. The property features two lighthouses and is fully operational, unlike many others that have been shut down.

My friend Robert and I made an unplanned trip here. We initially intended to capture some city photos but unexpectedly found ourselves at this location. I believe the thrill of spontaneity is the highlight. I've always enjoyed being impulsive. I dislike having plans. This unplanned detour turned into a delightful day.

We dined at Sonny's in Sturgeon Bay and enjoyed some Blueberry Mojitos. I ordered a scrumptious pasta dish that was so generous in portion I could hardly finish it there. I ended up taking it home, but unfortunately, I dropped the container on the road and lost my leftovers! To make matters worse, just as I dropped it, a deer approached and started munching on it right in front of me! Talk about adding insult to injury! HAHA!

Yet surely there are men who have made their art

Out of no tragic war; lovers of life,

Impulsive men, that look for happiness,

And sing when they have found it.

Ego dominus tuus –

William Butler Yeats

Impulsive buy inspired by Laurence's awesome photography.

I am on "compulsive photography mode". Can't stop clicking. Need help.

Set off on foot yesterday late afternoon with just 45 minutes or so remaining on the daylight clock. Wanted to be outside as the sky began the transition from daytime to nightfall. We're a couple weeks past the winter solstice, and the sun is now setting noticeably (though not significantly) later. The twilight phase is still dramatically short in comparison to summer. Even after all these years, it is still exhilarating to witness the process unfolding, to literally watch as night descends upon the village. In those moments, everything changes, light, shadow, backlighting, color...and it all feels simultaneous and continuous. Familiar scenes can take on weird appearances. A dramatic scene pops up right before you then vanishes within seconds, all because the lighting changed. I love the energy of these moments and find it a great time to shoot. It's a very impulsive time for me; I'm looking here, suddenly I'm distracted and looking over there. I seldom remain in one spot for more than a minute or so. I prefer to keep moving and adapting. What attracted me to this scene was the sense of silhouetting. Put me in mind of a cutout, like paper dolls. My visual sense of depth perception seems to fade with the daylight. Space is compressed as the foreground texture is lost. There's a sense of simplification as all that remains is light and dark.

I finally managed to take some photos of this creation. It has been sitting on my shelf for a while, but I guess it was good, as I kept adding some extra details from time to time.

This build was also a good excuse to finally use those tons of dark orange 2x2 plates I bought impulsively from BL. ;D

Oh, and the engines in the spaceship light up!

Make sure to check out the other photos.

Enjoy! :)

The second of three missions as part of NASA’s Antarctica Long Duration Balloon Flight Campaign was successfully launched at 8:10 a.m. EDT, Dec. 2.

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa was launched from Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo Station with support from the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Program.

Scientists will use ANITA’s instruments to study the reactions in the core of stars and as they explode via the release of neutrinos that travel to Earth and interact with the Antarctica ice. More: go.nasa.gov/2ghR6Le

Erotomania can be defined as a psychological disorder in which the afflicted relentlessly pursues the notion that the object of his/her affection reciprocates his/her romantic feelings and/or fantasies. This obsession with the desired individual continues long after that individual has asserted that he/she is not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with the afflicted. Consequently, erotomaniacs tend to stalk their victims. Characteristic of the erotomaniac (generally across the board) are the following: irrationality, a tendancy toward impulsive actions, obsessiveness, paranoia, psychotic tendancies. The erotomaniac tends to begin with simple, subtle expressions of affection to reach the object of his/her desire which later spirals out of control and can lead to expressions of anger, rage, frusteration and violence when such gestures go ignored and the victims continues to assert lack of interest. Strangely the erotomaniac fails altogether to see the victim's lack of interest.

explore front page !! thanks all

if anyones ever seen the movie "Obsessed" its pretty much about an Erotomaniac.

I actually really like this one... NOT the disorder. the picture. Even though its by far the most akward clone ever... :P

a very fast candid of a stranger.

Photography is a game of inches. At least it is for me. I can't begin to tell you how many shots have slipped through my fingers due to a full SD Card, a forgotten battery, a slow buffer, auto focus that refuses to focus....or just a stupid impulsive decision right at game time.

That was me two weeks ago while standing at the tunnel with a completely blah sky. Never mind that 40 photographers were standing patiently next to me behind their tripods waiting for the sky to do something amazing. I knew better. I was going to drive down to the valley view for one more shot before calling it a day.

But as I got to the El Cap turn off, I looked back and there it was. The sun had finally popped out and had lit up the valley in pink and orange. And it was almost gone.

Frick.

So I gunned the accelerator and drove...um...cautiously...like a maniac back to the tunnel. I pulled in, jumped out of the truck and knew I didn't have time for a tripod. I just pulled the camera out and started shooting brackets as fast as I could before all the light disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared.

The clearing storm has become the Holy Grail of Yosemite Photographers simply because you can't set your watch and head off and get a shot. Unless you live in Mariposa like Jedi Photorgpaher Micahel Frye, there's just no telling what the sky is going to do ahead of time, and generally you git what you git. So to come THAT close and miss it would have been truly criminal. This photo certainly didn't do this scene justice as the valley lit up, but for me it was enough just to be there, camera in hand, shooting away. As I told several of my photography buddies last week while we were shooting in the valley, I was there for four days last Summer and couldn't BUY a cloud. This is truly a stunning valley under every sky imaginable, but there's something about that view through torn clouds that just stops you right in your tracks. I know that was certainly my reaction as I finished shooting....and just stared until the light had gone from the sky.
