Agahi to implement the Nokia-UNESCO Mobile Learning initiative to deliver quality education to teachers

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO collaborate to launch Mobile Learning for Teacher’s in Pakistan using Nokia Education Delivery App to facilitate teacher training via mobile phones

Nokia Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad launched the project “Mobile Learning Project for Teacher’s Professional Development” today as formal collaboration in the presence of senior government officials, Nokia representatives and UNESCO representatives. As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application “Nokia Education Delivery (NED) for UNESCO’s project on ‘use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers’ in remote areas.

Since 2011 NED has turned into an open source solution to improve livelihoods, and in order to support such mobile learning innovations to be filled with life in Pakistan, The project will be implemented by AGAHI, a UNESCO partner and a non-profit foundation working in the area of communication and media policy design.

Nokia developed NED to allow using a mobile phone to access and download videos and other educational materials from a constantly updated education library. Operating in hundreds of schools and having reached millions of students in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile and Colombia, Nokia Education Delivery has been shown to improve study results and increase retention among students.

This collaboration is part of the agreement signed last year between UNESCO and Nokia at international level to promote the use of mobile technologies to further the objectives of “Education for All”. As part of this agreement Nokia is developing applications and new Mobile technologies offering access to information and enrich learning environments at global level.

In Pakistan, through the project “Mobile Learning for Teachers” Nokia’s Education Delivery application will help UNESCO to enable the delivery of high- quality educational materials to teachers who lack training and resources though mobile phones giving an opportunity to teachers to train themselves on the same level as professionally competent teachers.

Speaking about the project, UNESCO Director, Kozue Kai Nagata said, “In 21st century Public- private partnerships are enjoying growing attention and support as a new and sustainable modality for development. We are confident to collaborate with Nokia to provide us with the best platform to train public school teachers. Nokia Education Delivery is fit to match our need of delivering quality training to a large number of public school teachers across Pakistan through the project named “Mobile Learning for Teachers”

Amir Jahangir, President AGAHI and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, shared his views on the launch that “Pakistan is a knowledge starved country, where universal education has its own challenges. To meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education, Pakistan needs to address its education challenges through innovation and technology which can reach to a larger population with cost effective solutions”.

Speaking about the launch of NED program, Ulrike Vott Nokia Sustainability Manager for Middle East said, “Nokia Education Delivery facilitates education in a fun and interactive way. In addition to the NED software, Nokia offers program implementation support for the benefit of Pakistan’s education landscape.” The Nokia Education Delivery software system has two modules. The first module is installed on a Nokia mobile phone and contains a browse able catalog of educational videos. The second module is installed on the computer of the education administrator. It manages the organization’s mobile video library, so that videos can be added, deleted and updated. It also provides information on the usage of different videos.”

This unique pilot project for Pakistan has been initiated by UNESCO and AGAHI aims at using Mobile phones as medium for training teachers, where the teachers in remote areas will be equipped with devices, SIMs, a software solution and high quality educational content. The course for training and capacity building will be developed into video files and will be transmitted step by step according to curriculum on the phones provided to teachers. Over the course of the training period, teachers will be tested via SMS on regular basis and as an incentive, those who will score highest in tests will receive free mobile top ups. At the end of the course, test scores of all teachers will be aggregated and the passing teachers will be awarded certificate in the final workshop.

AGAHI is UNESCO implementing partner in Pakistan. A not for profit, AGAHI specializes in creating communication, information and media policy design tools, that enables the stakeholders to engage in information collaboration on knowledge-based platforms. AGAHI works in building the capacity of knowledge workers in creating content based on best practices to disseminate information in building a more integrated knowledge ecosystem.

New Castle (1, Heroes' Square).

This tract of the Hofburg is part of a larger conception (Imperial Forum) that was elaborated by Gottfried Semper, but which due to the slow progress of construction and, ultimately, because of the collapse of the Monarchy (1918) was only partially implemented.

Completed were the two Court museums (Museum of Art History, Museum of Natural History), the southern wing of the New Castle (between Heroes' Square and Imperial Gardens [Castle Gardens]) and the two monuments on Heroes' Square (Archduke Carl Monument, Prinz Eugen Monument).

Were not carried out the (planned symmetrically opposite) northern wing of the New Castle, the connection tract of these two wings in front of the Leopoldine wing as well as the two castle wings with the museums connecting triumphal arches along the Ring Steet.

Construction of the New Castle was begun in 1881 according to plans of Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer and, after Semper had left Vienna, it was continued under the leadership of Hasenauer. After Hasenauer's death (1894), the construction management was transferred to Emil von Foerster (1894-1907), Friedrich Ohmann respectively Ludwig Baumann (1907-1913).

The New Castle was only shortly before the First World War completed.

The exterior

The large curved to the inside front towards the Heroes' Square which is divided into a central building with driveway hall and ramps as well as to both sides each nine pairs of columns, between the windows of the ground floor is adorned by 20 large sculptures, demonstrating the main epochs and carriers of Austrian history (proposal of section chief Rudolf Freiherr von Breisky unlike Hasenauer, who wanted to install 20 Habsburg statues).

From left to right: Marcomanian warrier (by Johann Scherpe); Roman legionary (of Wilhelm Seib); Bajuwarian warrier (by Anton Břenek); Missionary (of Carl Kundmann); Slav (by Johann Koloc); Frankish count (Edmund Helmer); Magyar (by Rudolf Weyr); Crusader (by Viktor Tilgner); Sailor (by Josef Kassin); Knight (of Stephan Schwarz); Magister (by Edmund Hofmann); Merchant (of Hugo Haerdtl); Citizen (of Emmerich Alexander Swoboda); Miner (by Werner David); Mercenary (by Anton Schmidgruber); Soldier of Wallenstein (of Franz Koch); Pole of 1683 (Anton Břenek); Citizen of Vienna of 1683 (by Richard Kauffungen); liberated Farmer (of Anton Paul Wagner); Tyrolean of 1809 (by Johann Silbernagl).

Collections

In the New Castle is located since 1966 the reading room of the Austrian National Library (since 1992 books-storage and journals reading room in the basement floors), also in the Corps-de-Logis-tract are the World Museum, the Ephesus Museum and the image archive (including the Portrait collection) of the Austrian National Library.

Neue Burg (1, Heldenplatz).

Sammlungen

Dear Mr Pugh,

I hope you are well and enjoyed your weekend. I understand that you may have rung earlier with regards to offensive graffiti at Romily Place. I apologize that the graffiti is still present.

I just wanted to inform you that a graffiti removal team attended to the property on 29 September 2011, but unfortunately a disclaimer was unable to be signed, which we need to carry out work on private property. However, the builder working on the property at the time informed us that he would look to remove the graffiti after speaking to the owners, and would contact Cardiff Council if there were any problems.

Thank you very much for bringing to our attention that it is still present, we will attempt to contact the owners to establish if they would like us to remove the graffiti for them. Due to the offensive nature of it, we will make this a priority.

I once again apologize for the delay in attending to your issue.

Best wishes,

A campaign to remove visual litter (graffiti and tags) from our streets.

The trouble with tagging and graffiti is it's like over-littered areas and readily gets added to.

"It's there already, so it doesn't matter if I do it!"

We've become so used to seeing it that we stop acknowledging it's presence and start perceiving it as normal and acceptable.

Visual litter will remain as a recurrent and accumulative issue on our streets if it's not removed as quickly as possible by councils, private businesses or the willing community.

It will remain a cyclic issue, perpetuating the degradation of the quality of our community's environment.

Councilors often like to gain political favor by the removal of graffiti, time and time again, without ever addressing the preventative measures of education.

This will remain a cyclic issue, perpetuating the degradation of the quality of our community's environment if these preventative measures are not put in place!

The Canton Green Party suggests running relevant mentor led projects within our schools and communities.

Teaching in schools and youth centres across south wales as well as producing high quality murals for private and commercial clients.

They are currently on the outlook for public problem walls, especially graffiti vandalism or fly-postering.

So far they have tackled a few problem areas in Roath where fly posters and graffiti was a problem, since they have created their artwork on the walls, all vandalism has stopped.

Their service is free of charge as long as the wall is situated in a high visibility area and that their artists have artistic license over the content of the mural.

I will collate them and present them to the Cardiff City Council with the view to the removal of, and the stemming of the continual visual littering of our communities.

Mentor systems will always have longer term solutions. And lets stem this recurrent issue, of which Councilors love to gain favor with.

I pass this farm daily. The old haying implement in the field is for decoration or placed there as the effect of inertia. With the metal shed listing a bit and the heavy snowfall unsullied, the hay rake's skeletal appearance felt almost like an archeological find.

The Government of Alberta has directed Alberta Health Services (AHS) to proceed carefully in implementing a portion of their plan.

There will be no job losses for nurses or for other front-line clinical staff. Any reduction in full-time equivalent positions will be in keeping with proactive disclosures announced in the fall of 2019.

A minimum of 100 management positions will be eliminated and a full review of senior AHS executives will be completed before the end of the fiscal year.

Alberta’s government has directed that only a portion of the actions identified in the implementation plan proceed, changes that are expected to yield up to $600 million in annual savings.

“The pandemic has changed everything. As a result, AHS has been directed to proceed carefully, putting patient care above all else. As a first step, AHS has been directed to eliminate a minimum of 100 management positions and to proceed with previously announced contracting work. This approach will allow us to strike the right balance between supporting the COVID-19 response and Alberta’s challenging fiscal situation.” said Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health.

Plans to contract out laundry services and community lab services, both announced in 2019, will continue. Requests for proposals (RFPs) for these services will be issued before the end of the year. About 70 per cent of community lab services is currently provided by the private sector, while about 68 per cent of health-care laundry is already cleaned by the private sector.

AHS has been given the go ahead to proceed with developing business cases for both environmental and food preparation services in 2022 and 2023. Both business cases will be subject to review and approval by the Government of Alberta.

AHS will also streamline non-clinical and back office operations, including optimizing distribution and inventory management and strengthening staff scheduling and overtime management systems. Job losses will be minimized in these areas.

“Alberta’s response to the pandemic has been the primary focus of the entire health-care system over the past seven months. The care and well-being of Albertans will always be our first priority. We remain fully committed to continuing to improve the financial sustainability of the organization, and will implement some of the review recommendations in a strategic and paced approach that ensures front-line health-care workers and Albertans are supported throughout the pandemic.” said Dr. Verna Yiu, president and CEO, Alberta Health Services.

A Tableau of the Crop and Assorted Implements

One does not usually think of Connecticut when considering states that produce tobacco, that honor lies with Virginia and farther South and West; but Connecticut farms have grown the crop used primarily for cigar wrappers for centuries. While the Windsor area was most prolific, farms in towns around the state also produced tobacco.

Here we see, next to the thermometer advertising 'Tru Ade' soft drink, tobacco hung for drying. Tobacco is traditionally dried in specially built barns with slat-like openings for ventilation. Once the tobacco is nearly dry, the barns are heated to 'cure' the product. Below area line of cigar boxes and tobacco tins, and a machine labeled,
