“Soldiers learn to kill, but Christ says we shouldn’t kill our fellow man.”.
A black and white photograph of two pilots playing with two Dutch children, 1945.
Some of the reasons men and women chose to enlist in the war effort during the Second World War was the desire to protect their families and liberate other families – mainly the Dutch – from German rule. Under German occupation, the Dutch people suffered from a lack of food and medical care.
Despite the campaign costing the lives of many Canadian soldiers, many were happy to deliver food and supplies, such as these pilots who are pictured playing with two Dutch children.
While fighting and supplying Dutch families, nearly 2,000 soldiers met Dutch women who would later become war brides and immigrate to Canada after the war.

This is probably Angus "Scotty" McKay not his borther Donald McKay also nicknamed "Scotty". They fought in Victoria and Toronto and even in Vancouver around the turn of the century. Donald was born in Scotland, Angus too, immigrating to Canada just after the turn of the century. I have a bit more info and of course all these old newspaper clippings...
I met Michele in the living library event. Her parents immigrated to Canada from Germany. Michele was borne in Calgary and moved to this city at 2. Since I am a visible minority and Michele’s parents are European immigrants, I was interested in Michele’s immigrant experience and see if there’s any difference. Turned out they had come across kind of discrimination as well. She explained to me it’s because they were Germans and WWII was still in people mind. However, it’s a different era now. She is glad to see the campus is more diverse nowadays.

In the background (between the front of the truck and the signs on the road) is the farm where my Great-Grandfather worked when he immigrated to Canada from England in 1929.
When my Great-Grandmother returned from a trip with her cousin across Canada, she arrived back to that farm and met my Great-Grandfather, who since he was a hired-hand, took her home across the hand-pull ferry. They married two years later.
My Grandmother was born about 1km down the road from here.
My great grandparents and my granddad as a toddler- there was not a caption on this photo so based off his age I can only assume this picture was taken in the late 30's probably 1937-8. I also know this picture was taken in liverpool england as thats where they lived until my granddad immigrated to Canada in his 20's

Historian, author, priest. Henry Scadding immigrated to Canada as a child with his parents in 1821. His father was John Scadding, clerk to the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe. The child was initially schooled in York, and then received his education at Upper Canada College, where he had the distinction of being the first pupil enrolled in 1830. He also matriculated at Saint John's College at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. He graduated from the latter in 1837, and returned to Canada. (He received additional degrees from Cambridge in 1840, 1852, and 1867.) In 1838, Scadding was appointed a classical master at Upper Canada College. He was also ordained a priest of the Church of England, and served at Saint James' Church in Toronto. Scadding married in 1841, but was widowed in 1843. He served as rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto from 1847 to 1875. Due to his failing health, he resigned from the college in 1862 and the church in 1875. At that time, he was appointed as a canon at Saint James' Cathedral. While Henry Scadding published on a variety of subjects throughout his life, his strongest interest was Toronto history. He authored a number of books, but is perhaps best known for his "Toronto of Old: collections and recollections illustrative of the early settlement and social life of the capital of Ontario."

We do not believe the parents of John to be accurate. Mollie (Mrs. John) McKenna probably never met them All other information indicates John's parents were John and Rose McKenna born in Ireland and immigrated to Canada where John was born.

Grey Owl, whose real name was Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, was born in Hastings, England, in 1888. He immigrated to Canada in 1906, became a fur trapper and invented an Indigenous identity for himself. In 1925, his wife, Anahareo, of Algonquin and Mohawk descent, convinced him that his hunting activities were harmful to the environment. He then set about spreading his new ecological convictions and became an early conservationist for Canada's national parks. The author of Tales of an Empty Cabin (1936) wrote various successful novels that delighted the young Riopelle. In 1936, the artist attended a talk given by Grey Owl. In 1938, Archibald "Grey Owl" Belaney passed away in Beaver Lodge, Saskatchewan, now a popular tourist destination. In this large painting executed in Paris, we can make out the famous fur trapper's cabin by the lake from the profusion of coloured strokes rendering the Canadian forest. This Englishman who had usurped an Indigenous identity, this fur trapper who had usurped an Indigenous identity, this fur trapper who had taken up the cause of environmental protection, had all the elements needed to capture Riopelle's interest.
A Polish native, Karolina Francis earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Warsaw in 1999. However, a few years later, Karolina turned her love of listening to and reporting other people’s stories into a love of being part of those stories; in 2007, she completed her certification in becoming an Immigration Practitioner, and began helping people make their dreams of immigrating to Canada come true.

Grandfather of Gladys Emma (Poole) Lethemon. He immigrated to Canada from Ireland, and eventually led a church in Detroit. He held some strange theories about the British being descended from the Jews and published a book on the matter. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Poole for more information on him.
My journey took my even further north to the hamlet of Ellon, which is approximately a twenty minute bus ride from the harbour in Aberdeen. The school in the background is named, much like the street, after Provost Davidson -- a likely distant relative as my own great grandfather John Davidson immigrated to Canada from Ellon, Scotland.

Martin Tolley came to Vancouver in the late 1950’s after a brief stint back east when he immigrated to Canada from England. He is considered to be one of the original Steelhead bum’s in the Pacific Northwest. He loved fishing the Squamish river when the steelhead runs used to be numerous. Tolley was a founding member and the first president of the Totem Fly Fishing club which was the first fly fishing club in BC. He developed this pattern in the 1960’s and was one of the few that promoted the use of fly’s for winter run steelhead in the early days of steelheading in BC. This is a killer pattern and has been proven to fool winter and summer run steelhead across the Pacific Northwest.

Clearly, as you can tell that I don't travel anywhere around the world without my Toronto gear. Recently, I had the opportunity to go back to Sri Lanka and meet my grandma’s older sister! I was able to speak to her about our ancestors and the lifestyle my parents lived before immigrating to Canada. It was a great experience to learn even more about my family heritage and how much we've developed as a whole. This photo means a lot because it relates to Toronto and my family tree. In a way, it's a collaboration of both worlds where you combine the past with the present. ALSO, she was concerned that she wasn't dolled up for this photo but I just got off a 5 am flight in the morning so I had bigger problems haha!😂🍁 #LoveMyCityProject #WeTheNorth
