🇬🇧 The monarch It is possible to immediately spot an adult monarch thanks to its two pairs of orange wings veined with black and spotted with white. The males can be distinguished by the black dot they display in the center of their hind wing. The variety of Monarchs that live in Canada undertakes migrations of 4 to 5000km...it has a longer lifespan than that of Costa Rica which does not migrate The adult Monarch feeds on nectar from several flowers. In the cold season, on wintering sites, it stops feeding. The caterpillar eats exclusively milkweed leaves

A view of the west side of the 200 block of S. Sixth St. from Adams St. in downtown Springfield. All of the buildings in this view lie within the Central Springfield Historic District.
Centered on the Old State Capitol, which served as the Illinois state house from 1840 to 1876, this area includes an outstanding number of two and three story late 19th and early 20th century commercial structures, intact for most part on the upper facades. These buildings included hotels, drug stores, groceries, clothing stores, and dry good stores. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and was expanded in 1986 and 2015.
The Greek Revival style building on the immediate right was built by Seth M. Ainsley in 1840-41 for commercial use, and is the site of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices. During his nearly 25-year law career, Abraham Lincoln used office space in several Springfield locations, but this now historic site is the only building which still stands.
During Lincoln's time the federal government rented the first floor for a post office and the second floor for a district courtroom, judge's chamber and clerk's office. In the 1840s the federal district included the entire state of Illinois.
William H. Herndon became Lincoln's junior partner in 1844. While Lincoln and Herndon occupied this building, they prepared cases for the federal courts, the Illinois Supreme Court and the state's Eighth Judicial Circuit, which covered most of east-central Illinois. Lincoln rode the circuit for a total of six months during the year, but Herndon usually stayed in Springfield.
Lincoln and Herndon moved from this location in 1852 to another building on the west side of the square. Their partnership was not officially dissolved until Lincoln's death in 1865. Just before Lincoln left Springfield to become President he told Herndon, "If I live I'm coming back some time, and then we'll go right on practising law as if nothing had ever happened."
Took this beautiful cloud formation at 8.15am on Tuesday 18th January 2022 - just after sunrise - with the sun's ray's being diffused behind the horizon.
Altocumulus Clouds are middle altitude clouds that are characterised by globular masses or rolls in layers or patches and occur between 2,000 - 7,000m (7,000 - 23,000ft).
There are several sub groups.
Altocumulus Floccus clouds generally indicate that there is instability in the altitude when they are formed. That's certainly been the case here recently with the extremes of weather we've experienced during the last month and are ongoing!
Our topgraphy is quite 'Unique' - being five miles distant from the North Wales Coast Line to the immediate left and to the right bordering on the foothills of the Carnedd Mountains and thereafter Snowdonia. Frequently this results in converging weather systems above our village - resulting in atmospheric turbulence as well as great photo opportunities like this!

The medieval castle on a cliff rising on the eastern side of the valley of the Hernád River, in the immediate vicinity of Boldogkőváralja. The Miocene andesite tuff Bodókő Hill, on which the castle stands, is part of the Zemplén Landscape Protection Area. Due to the beauty of the landscape and the relatively good condition of the castle, it is a popular hiking destination, which is one of the stops of the National Blue Tour.
The earliest part of the castle (an old tower surrounded by a fortification) was probably built after the Tartar invasion and was erected either by Ispán Tyba, son of Jaak of the tribe of Tomaj, or by Judge Aba Amadé. When Károly Róbert Anjou chased the Aba, the castle came to the Drugeth family, which was loyal to him, and later to Péter Czudar. In the 15th century, it became the property of Serbian princes István and György, and then of the Szapolyai family. In Turkish times, he often changed hands as one of the venues for the intense battles between the emperor and the king. It was acquired by the conquering György Rákóczi in 1666, later it became important several times in the Kuruc times, but even before the Rákóczi War of Independence, in 1701, it was made uninhabitable by the emperors. The ruin was taken possession of by the Jesuits in the 18th century, who used it as a grain warehouse. Later it became the property of the Péchy and then the Zichy family, who, however, no longer lived in the uncomfortable fortress, instead using a baroque castle built in the area of the serf village. Despite the bombing of imperial soldiers and the devastating centuries that followed, it is one of our best-preserved medieval castles.
Although they can swim immediately after hatching , chicks ( common loon ) spend a lot of time on their parents backs during the first few days of their lives .This helps them regulate their body temperature and protects them from underwater predators. Chicks are entirely dependent on their parents for food , and one adult usually stays on the surface of the water with
the chicks while the other catches fish and feeds them !

You'll never believe it, but my first response was an inward groan. Although I wasn't asleep yet, the descent into dreamland was most definitely in my immediate plans as I made one last languid scroll on the back of my camera through the evening's adventure at Eystrahorn, just a few miles along the road from our cottage. Jumping out of the warm cosy bed in which I was so snugly cocooned to rush from my generously heated bedroom outside and into the subarctic night was by no means on the agenda. Not one bit. Not even slightly. We'd had a long and successful day and now it was bedtime - 12:30am kind of bedtime at that too. But then again there had been that knock on my bedroom door, accompanied by an urgent and excited announcement from Lee. "It's started again," he sang through the door. Seconds later I heard the front door opening. He was already out there, disappearing into the night.
An hour earlier it had been my turn. Lee had already headed to bed, while Mr Night Owl here was finding sleep harder to come by and had resorted to uploading the day's images into the cloud to ensure that even if the plane went down and I had to involuntarily surrender my cameras to the icy Atlantic waters, at least I'd be able to work with their legacy on my return home. Once we'd been picked up by a lonely trawler with an extra large hold of course. As I made my final foray to the kitchen for a glass of water, I looked through the window into the inky black night. At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me as it took a few moments to realise that a patch of sky that was neither inky nor black might just be the icing on the day's already richly decorated cake. "Lee, wake up," I threw over my shoulder as I headed for the front door. "I think it's the Aurora."
And that's exactly what it was. Faint but distinctly green patterns covered a small area of the sky to the east and north, shifting in and out of the blackness. Never more than a small patch of the night was filled with green at any one time, but we knew this might be it as we raced out into the dark long grass in front of the cottage, hastily assembling cameras onto tripods and trying to remember the lessons we'd learned about night time photography in the long gone days of occasionally entertaining ourselves with star trails. "Aperture wide open, ISO high as you dare, and remember the five hundred rule so the stars don't blur." Fifteen minutes later we'd agreed that the show was over, and returned to our beds, content that for the first time ever, we'd witnessed the Northern Lights; that afterthought we'd written down on the Iceland trip masterplan along the lines of "Watch the app, and stay alert at night, just in case."
But this time it was Lee who'd stayed alert and peered through his window at the back of the cottage towards the north. This time I was the one who was dragged from his bed as a welter of belated enthusiasm overcame that initial refusal to budge from underneath a warm duvet. Throwing my coat over my pyjamas and pulling my boots onto bare feet, I followed him out into the night once more, where I was greeted by a sight that took stole my words and stopped me in my tracks. Where before there had been the odd green streak, there were now huge drifts, filling large areas of the sky with dancing and glowing magnificence. At least the camera settings were still in situ from an hour earlier, but where had the buttons on my head torch gone? Realising that in my haste I'd put it on upside down I tried to switch it on, selecting the right hand button to engage a pointless pair of red flashing lights instead of the solid white beam I needed to see the controls on my camera. As I moved over the unlit grass I almost tripped over my tripod, the legs of which had remained extended from episode one. Calm and controlled? I'll let you be the judge. Strangely, the one thing I can't remember was whether or not it was cold out there.
We needn't have panicked though. The night was on our side, giving us a display that lasted for more than half an hour, the sky becoming ever more filled with the mysterious green light, hanging in ethereal curtains over the mountains behind us like a gateway to another world, moving subtly from one part of the sky to next without us noticing. Fading almost to blackness and then rebuilding brightly, it seemed as if they were softly breathing as they gazed down at us like gods upon mortals in silent benevolence. What a surreal experience to stand beneath the stars, wearing your jimjams in a land whose story was built upon the sagas handed down over more than a thousand years, where your imagination can roam across those mountains into a universe that you thought only existed in the writings of Tolkien, CS Lewis and Philip Pullman. In a place like this, at a moment like this, the distance between fiction and reality can become blurred to the point that you no longer know which is which. Very much in the same way that you no longer know which button operates which light sequence on your head torch when you put it on in a terrible hurry.
Just after one o clock, exhilarated and beyond any hope of getting meaningful sleep, we took one final look at the sky, where the greens had receded once more and given way to the stars on the black and indigo canvas in front of us. We'd hadn't come to Iceland with any real hope of seeing the Aurora, but here in this remote farmstead, more than twenty miles from the nearest small town, we'd had our moment. Although the show was forecast to return more strongly the following night, we never saw it again. But it didn't matter. I'd taken photos in my jimjams and seen a night sky I'd remember forever. What more could we ask for on this fantastic adventure that seemed to get better and better with every passing day?
Monumental abstract stone sculpture in front of the Hilltop Science Centre of Wisley Gardens (Royal Horticultural Society) in Surrey. A good way of beginning to explore this vast area is to look at its sculptures. These two gigantic stone slabs are different, one bright, the other dark. There is an immediate polarity. However, they are interlocking and, therefore, despite their difference, complementary. They belong together. Out of duality, a new unity is formed. You can't get more abstract or basic than this. We are at an elementary level with this sculpture, and I find it quite appropriate for a place of science.

Upon entering, the eye is immediately drawn to the ceiling, sumptuously decorated with plant motifs where green, red and yellow blend throughout the cross vaults.
On the vault of the main nave, the large symmetrical motifs with stylized foliage are joyfully repeated ad infinitum with a premature Art Deco look, since the frescoes are dated 1437 ! They include characters, Dominicans, including St. Peter of Verona, martyr (murdered in 1251). It is to him that the church is dedicated, but the Veronese prefer Anastasia, with a beautiful legend, martyred under Diocletian (end of the 3rd century AD) and insist on calling the church by her ancient name. Burned alive because she resisted the greedy and vicious men of power...
¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨
🇬🇧 Just east of the agora is the theatre. With a magnificent view over the Pamphylian plain, it is undoubtedly the most beautiful building in Termessos. It clearly has the characteristics of a Roman theatre, although it retains some of the layout of the Hellenistic period. The semicircular cavea (part of a Roman theatre or amphitheatre where the seating tiers are located) is divided into two parts by a diazôma (aisle that divides the seating tiers horizontally into two parts). There are eight rows of seats above the diazôma and sixteen below, giving an estimated capacity of between 4,000 and 5,000 spectators. An arched entrance connected the cavea to the agora. The southern parados (a passageway for the chorus and some of the actors) was vaulted in Roman times, while the northern parados has been preserved in its original open state.

The green-cheeked parakeet (Pyrrhura molinae), known as the green-cheeked conure in aviculture, is a species of bird in subfamily Arinae of the family Psittacidae, the African and New World parrots.[3] It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay.
The green-cheeked parakeet is most closely related to the maroon-bellied, pearly (P. lepida), and crimson-bellied (P. perlata) parakeets
The IUCN has assessed the green-cheeked parakeet as being of Least Concern. It has a fairly large range but its population size is not known and is believed to be decreasing. No immediate threats have been identified.[1] It is considered common in much of its range.
Living in the immediate vicinity of a real fairytale castle, which is indeed Moritzburg Castle in Saxony, is quite a privilege. Living in the castle would of course be much cooler, but I'm a frugal person by nature.
And so last Sunday evening I was able to spontaneously drive past here and enjoy the sunset. Of course I wasn't alone here, on the contrary. But since I mostly focused my attention towards the castle, I hardly noticed the many walkers who strolled past behind me.
My starting point for photography was at this point. Then, as the sunset progressed, I moved around the lake little by little to adjust the view of the castle to the changed lighting conditions. Here too there are two or three more photos to show. (sometime)
(irgendwann)

My immediate thought, when seeing these small angel statues, was that the one to the rear was actually sneaking up from behind....ready to give karate chops to the neck of the peaceful angel. However, it could be that the standing angel is actually offering some sort of unique massage to the the strained muscles of the seated angel. What is your guess?

Day 12 of 20 of albums that influenced my musical tastes.
Definitely Maybe is the debut studio album by the English band Oasis, released on 29 August 1994.
This was the case of love at first hearing. I don't find any flaws in this brilliant debut. Live forever is one of those songs that will have a special place in my heart and maybe in the history of contemporary music. It can talk of brothers, friends and lovers bond and love.
Definitely Maybe was an immediate commercial and critical success in the United Kingdom, having followed on the heels of the singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", and the UK top-ten hit "Live Forever", which was also a success on US Rock Airplay. The album went on to sell over 8.5 million copies worldwide and brought widespread critical acclaim. It went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK at the time. (from Wikipedia)

The spectacular Boldt Castel is a testament to the tragic love story that began in the late 19th century between the millionaire George C. Boldt, a prominent hotelier and proprietor of the famous Waldorf Asteria Hotel in New York, and Louise Augusta Kehrer known for her grace and beauty. She was the light of George’s life, and he credited her for much of his success. The dream and grander of the Rhineland-style of Boldt Castle began in 1900 in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island, nestled in the calm waters of the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands area of New York State.
It was to be a gift to Louise, a symbol of his undying love and devotion. George spared no expenses with the finest architectural details of the six story, 120 luxurious room castle, complete with tunnels, Italian gardens, playhouse and dove-cote. However, the love story took a sorrowful turn in 1904 when Louise tragically died due to heart failure at age 42. Her sudden death left George devastated and he immediately stopped the project; he never returned to the island. The fairytale castle was abandoned for 73 years. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and started important restoration efforts. Today, it is a major tourist attraction for visitors from around the world. Their love, though marked by sadness, continues to resonate through the halls and towers of Boldt Castle, capturing the hearts of all who visit.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Spring Hill is an immediate inner city suburb to Brisbane's Central Business District and sprawls across the hill that overlooks the city. A lot of it is high rise buildings, hotels, accommodation etc but quite a bit is still an area of close knit heritage houses.
This shot is taken in Victoria Street, a location with which I had great familiarity around the time I turned 18 as a neighbouring house to this was my very good chiropractor** at the time. These people knew how to work on my back and I wish that they were still practising - as it's nearly 50 years on, not very likely, right?
Back then much of the heritage landscape was under threat of massive redevelopment, secret home and building demolishers who would move in at 3.00am to avoid conflict with protestors. Thankfully, we live in a much enlightened world and there are now more protections, by no means guaranteed, against the unscrupulous to ensure scenes like this prevail.
**In fact, this may have been my Chiropractor's premises. I can't tell for sure as many of the homes then had enclosed verandahs done in horrible style which have subsequently removed as homes have been restored to their original design including restoration of the wrought iron railings. They look quite different. If not, it was right next door to the left.
