Sh2-308 is an emission nebula and HII region located near the center of the constellation Canis Major, composed of ionised Hydrogen. It is about 8 degrees south of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula is bubble-like, surrounding a Wolf-Rayet star named EZ Canis Majoris. This star is in the brief, pre-supernova phase of its stellar evolution.

Hi Folks,

I just published my latest imaging project!

This is IC 5070, better known as the Pelican Nebula!

This is the result of 18.75 hours of naroband integration - my longest yet! It's a challenge to get this much time on target on Update NY with our weather!

Now that my observatory is operational, I have been capturing data on nights that were marginal enough that I might not have set up my gear in the driveway for them. But this is not a problem for the observatory!

I actually collected 21+ hours but had to remove two hours of data due to thin clouds passing through at some point.

In this image, the "pelican" is lying on its back with its beak up in the air. If you rotate the image 90 degrees counterclockwise, you may see its form better, but I opted to use the landscape format for aesthetic reasons.

I am very pleased with the final image. There is some incredible dust detail that can be seen when view full screen.

The whole story of this project and a detailed processing walkthrough can be seen here:

cosgrovescosmos.com/projects/ic5070-pelican-2025

I have data sets collected for three more targets, so stay tuned as I process and complete those!

Thanks for looking!

Clear Skies,

Pat

That's no Star Cluster!

That's the Coma Cluster of Galaxies - over 1000 galaxies about 320 M light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices!

It may look ho-hum at first glance, but look deeper!

Zoom in and explore! Almost everything you see will be tiny galaxies. Many are old population elliptical galaxies with their yellow coloration. But there are also many spiral galaxies to be seen as well. Some face-on, some edge-on.

This is the result of 8.2 hrs of LRGB from William Optics 132 scope platform - and is the last image to be processed from the First Light from my Whispering Skies Observatory!

The full post can be seen here:

cosgrovescosmos.com/projects/coma-cluster

This describes in detail what you are seeing here, the efforts taken to secure this image, and the full step-by-step processing details.

Now I just need the clouds and forest-fire smoke to go away so I can get more data!

Stay Tuned...

Pat

Our works in stone, in paint, in print, are spared, some of them, for a few decades or a millennium or two, but everything must finally fall in war, or wear away into the ultimate and universal ash - the triumphs, the frauds, the treasures and the fakes. A fact of life: we're going to die. "Be of good heart," cry the dead artists out of the living past. "Our songs will all be silenced, but what of it? Go on singing." Maybe a man's name doesn't matter all that much.

Greetings once again, thanks for stoppin’ by, good to be back and connect, always enjoy our visits.

Meet The Jazz Singer, an outstanding talent with personality galore and one of my favourite acts at The 2014 Beaches International Jazz Festival in Toronto. What a great performer. As you can see, amazing stage presentation, his mannerisms are second to none, truly a class act with a silky smooth voice.

And a big bravo to his 12 piece band, funky, jazzy, bluesy, soul-fully groovin’ all day long. An outstanding assembly of accomplished musicians from the big smoke. Fabulous rhythm section, fabulous horn section, absolutely superb in every way. Imagine Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, with a touch of Quincy Jones mixed in for good measure, you get my drift. Simply awesome.

All in all, yet another fantastic festival, I’m already making plans for next year. Perhaps we’ll meet to share some sunshine and music on the beach.

Enjoy your day.

Dundas Square, The Eaton Centre

Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

There’s always something going on in our great city and this day was no exception, we had a great time at Dundas Square being entertained by musicians, singers, dancers and clowns, something for everyone.

Meet Clarence the Clown, a colourful character who kept us in stitches with his performance, wonderful costume and mannerisms. Everybody loved him, especially the little ones who all received one of his balloon creations, figures of animals, birds or whatever they asked for. The smiles on their faces were simply priceless. What kid could ask for anything more on a sunny day at the Square, well ok, ice cream perhaps. ha!

Thanks once again for stoppin’ by, always appreciate your visit. I wish you a most wonderful day and look forward to connecting with you soon.

For all you music lovers, a trip down Memory Lane. Follow the Link to listen to Cathy’s Clown by the Everly Brothers, one of the greatest hits from the 60’s. Enjoy!

hi there, a bit o' colour for you, hope it brightens your day.

ah yes, that age old question; what rhymes with orange. in case you’re wondering, the rumor that orange rhymes with no other word in the English Language is totally incorrect.

in fact, “orange” rhymes with Blorenge (a mountain in Wales) and sporange (a sac where spores are made). "silver" has the same rumor going for it, but it actually rhymes with Wilver (a nickname) and chilver (a ewe lamb).

how about that. who knew, eh. thanks wiki.

good to be back in flickr'land, look forward to catching up, seeing all your wonderful works. and thank you for your kind visits and comments while I was away, sincerely appreciated and always welcomed. you guys are the best.

I wish y'all a wonderful day. enjoy!

Every time I walk past this place it reminds me of my childhood, growing up in the west end of our great city.

Mrs. Brown was a kind old lady who adopted all of us as her own. Her door was always open, “come in, come in” she would say, “want some milk and cookies, how was your day at school”. All the neighborhood kids called her mom because she wanted it that way.

We went to Mrs. Brown’s, after school, after the game, after a date, after having been scolded by our parents, Mrs. Brown’s was our place of choice, she always made us feel at home.

And a great mom she was. If you had a problem, who would you go to first, Mrs. Brown of course, she was never too busy to lend an ear and always so understanding. A retired School Teacher, she knew her way around kids and treated us with all the empathy and tenderness any kid our age could ever ask for.

Thank you Mrs. Brown, you taught your children well.

Texture Tutorial — Adobe Photoshop

I like playing with digital blending on PS and one of the simplest applications is texturing an image (of course without the use of filters!) .

I have numerically labeled the images for your reference and this is how we proceed :

Step1 (Image Selection) — Take the image (1) and process it to get on to image (2).

Step2 (Texture Selection) — Select the texture you wish to render. One example is the vintage crushed-postcard in image (3). You can either scan a texture of your choice or google it. || Examples Tex 1, Tex 2 etc

Step3 (Texture Preparation) — This is an important step! We shall use the Distort Filter in photoshop and for this we need to make a texture map. This is done as follows,

Step3.1 Make a new image file and paste the texture there.

Step3.2 Now, desaturate the image (Ctrl+Shift+U in PC) and blur it (I prefer 'Blur More' filter or alternatively you can also use Gaussian Blur).

Step3.3 Save this file in PSD format by name 'Texture_map.psd".

Step4 (Texturing) — Keep your texture image (3) as background. Take the processed image (2) to a new layer above it (called 'layer 1'). Keeping layer 1 selected, go to Filter-> Distort -> Displace. Select displace range to 5 pixels (I use this often). And apply the filter.

Step5 (Digital Blending) — Keeping 'layer 1' selected, change the image blending mode to multiply or soft light (depends on subjective selection, as you want!) and just play with the opacity of this layer and you are done!

———————————————————TIPS———————————————————

∎ The color balance of Texture image should be in sync with that of your foreground image. (Imagine how blue over yellow would look like..it could be creative though).

∎ If you select a texture with great number of ridges you need to use a stronger blur (in STEP3.2). You don't want to make your projection of image on the texture look like an artifact!

∎ You can't move your layer 1 once you have applied the displace filter.

∎ Your image size should be less than or equal to your texture image.

∎ I Strongly Recommend you to view this Gallery.

There are many kind people who are willing to share their textures. Check this for example! Drop me a mail if you want your texture page to be added here.

Late afternoon winter sun through the trees. Although it was initially a good picture, I literally spent days trying to achieve an effect that felt right. And after all that time I'm still not quite sure exactly what I was trying to do, but its time to move on. Maybe some day I'll figure it out.

A little memento from last summer, o' how I miss

summer, already.

It's a good thing that I was out plenty of times last

season to snap off a few, I have a hard drive full of

memories to play with during the cold and blustery

winter months.

Thanks for stoppin’ by, always enjoy our visits, a little memento from my last waltz in the woods on a spectacular late summer day at Thornton Bales Conservation Area. Only minutes north of the city, yet miles away from the big smoke.

Simply had to get out one more time before autumn leaves begin to fall, while everything is still lush, still green, still wonderful and warm. Needless to say, it was a glorious day in Mother Nature’s backyard and my favourite way to spend the last day of summer. More…

Happy belated Thanksgiving wishes to all Canadian flickr’ites. Hope you had a joyful celebration with family and friends.

cheers!

I was intrigued by the Gianmarco Lodi's photostream and particularily this picture caught my attention and coupled by this (and a lot of smoke) they made this composition.

Norman Walker's "Jacob and The Angel" Revival with John Dahlstrand's Wings projected on the rear wall of the stage. The original photo was in Flickr's Explore

Music: Alberto Ginastera

Cheoreography & Costume Design: Norman Walker

Jacob: Javier Chavez (Guest Artist) in brown costume

The Angel: Bo Binton in white costume

Artistic Director: Cecily Bressel

Dress Rehearsal Photos: Chic Bressel

Jacob, having wrestled with an Angel of The Lord all night, asks the Angel to bless him. The Angel blesses him and says henceforth his name shall be Israel (Yisrael in Hebrew) He who contends with The Lord.

I shot Jacob And The Angel in the theatre at yesterday's (May 30th, 2014) dress rehearsal of "Arizona Ballet Theatre Salutes The Americas 2014." The lighting is dramatically low, so I had to shoot at slower shutter speeds than I like to use.

Performances were the following Saturday Evening at 6 pm and Sunday Matinee at 3 pm, in the University Of Arizona's Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.

Isn't it great how things turn out sometime. It was a dull and dreary Saturday morning, I really didn't have any plans and as I was heading out to do some shopping the phone rang.

"hey, you wan'na go to the Humber".

Of course I said yes, I would never refuse an invite to one of my favourite places to snapp off a few regardless of the weather, summer, winter, rain or shine. Shopping can wait. Like I said, it wasn't a particularly nice day, not a lot of sun, even a bit over-cast but to the Humber we went and I'm so happy we did.

After roaming the parklands and lagoons for a couple of hours without seeing anything too exciting, almost disappointedly we decided to leave the valley in search of something else to do for the rest of the day. We stopped at a picnic table down by the river to have some snacks and make an alternate plan.

Suddenly the sun came out and everything came to life, birds started flying all around, animals scurrying everywhere, fish jumping in the water, it was almost as if mother nature pushed the ON button and one of the most sudden transformations that I had ever experienced. From the mundane to the thrilling in the blink of an eye.

Needless to say our cameras started working overtime and just before the clouds came back, this magnificent creature landed on the far shore. What a surprise, what a fantastic surprise. I had seen this bird on a previous visit but never managed to get a decent shot. This time, it was ready to sit and pose with wings spread wide. What an actor, what a show-off, it absolutely made my day.

Once again, a trip to the Humber turned into a fantastic adventure, filled with unexpected surprises and everlasting memories.

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.
