Making sure the little ones did not touch it, I paused for a moment to pay my respects.............and to take my photograph. The richly decorated frieze is similar to that of Maison Carrée (Nîmes, France), and these two temples are considered the two best complete Roman monuments outside Italy.

These Cyprus trains are roughly over 100 years old. The Cyprus Railway was a railway network that was in operation from 1905 to 1951. At the time in 1905, Cyprus was under British colonial rule and it was them who introduced this incredible revolutionary technology, with many constructed-in Plymouth, UK and transported to Cyprus. Up until this point, the modes of transport were by camels and donkeys. In Cyprus, there were a total of 39 stations and stops along a 37-mile route from Famagusta in the east to Evrychou in the west. The railway network was used for various reasons, including passenger travel, with stations located every two miles, with signs in Greek, English and Turkish. The government also used the railway for transporting mail, timber from Troodos and freight from the port of Famagusta. In total during its 46-year history, the Cyprus railway train line carried over 7 million passengers and 3 million tons of goods and minerals. I feel like people do not fully understand how much life changed for our species between 1900 and 2000. To give some perspective, chariots were invented in 2000 BC and were the fastest form of transportation known to man for around 3800 years until trains in the 1800s. then 100 years later we were flying, and 66 years after that we were on the moon.

Tyrannosaurus rex, located in the Orton Hall Museum. This skull is a four foot long replica. The whole skeleton is 45 feet long. The living animal is thought to have weighed seven tons.

Lucky Star theme park is the first and only place that I have visited and recall what it was like before it was abandoned. I had my 8th birthday party there and would visit sometimes with friends and family as a child, especially as it was in my hometown of Aradippou. It was strange to explore the place and remember what it used to be like and all the fun memories I had there. What I felt with seeing Lucky Star in the state it has become isn't even a glimmer of what others feel when they see their childhood homes, schools, towns etc, abandoned due to war. Even worse, when they are forbidden to see because of military occupation of these places - Aradippou.

Varosha, a city worth $150 billion, was abandoned in 1974 when the Turkish military invaded and captured the northern half of Cyprus. 40,000 Greek Cypriot residents fled the city for fear of violence. Varosha was fenced off and declared a Turkish military zone, with no one allowed to enter for the past 47 years. The invasion resulted in widespread looting, destruction of historical sites, and displacement of 200,000 people, including 40,000 from Varosha.
Before the invasion, Varosha was a glamorous coastal town with golden sandy beaches and grand hotels that attracted famous stars like Sophia Loren, Richard Burton, and Brigitte Bardot. It was a thriving place known for its festivals and events, and it played a significant role in Cyprus' tourism, accounting for 90% of it.
In October 2020, people were allowed to visit the fenced off area for the first time. However, the Turkish government opened it for business and political interests rather than allowing the former residents, who still own properties there, to return. This move has sparked international condemnation due to its violation of United Nations resolutions. Evidence of attempts to erase Greek and Christian symbols by Turkish troops since 1974 was apparent, with crosses taken down and signs in Greek scrubbed away. The city felt like an apocalyptic place from the 1970s, with surveillance cameras monitoring visitors and military drones causing unease. Entry into buildings was strictly forbidden. During my visit, I encountered a group of Varosha refugees reliving memories on the streets, reminiscing about their first loves, laundry spots, favorite dining places, and childhood homes.

I took this picture with my phone at the Drake Union during sunset yesterday. The docks beneath the Drake are the perfect place to hang out or be alone to watch a sunset since it faces west and the sun sets right above the river.
