Majolika-Manufaktur was set up at Karlsruhe in south-west Germany in 1901 in a pottery built by Grand Duke Friedrich I. The raison d'etre for the pottery was the desire of two German pictorial artists, Wilhelm Süs and Hans Thoma, to produce ceramics in the Italian Renaissance style.

Towards the end of the decade a style had developed with designs, often churubim, on a blue background. Domestic and decorative wares were produced using designs by various artists, and the company started the production of architectural and outdoor ceramics.

In the following years the pottery passed through various hands, at one time being occupied by Villeroy and Bosch, the premises being owned by the state of Baden. In 1927 the word 'Staatliche' was added to the name to indicate state ownership. Top designers of the day were employed, notably Ludwig König and Max Läuger.

The factory was badly damaged by bombs in 1944, and was not back into full-time production of decorative goods until the 1950s, after which business resumed much as in pre-war days with company-employed and freelance designers. Examples of the company's products can be seen at the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe.

Starting to Learn Gimp. Steep learning curve so taking it slow.

Started by standard processing Image by 3rd image. And some specific Gimp effects with this 4th image.

Took 30-40 mins. as learned as I went. Using Clone/Heal,Blur & Dodge/Burn Tools as easy start. Once I figured them out would have taken 5-10 mins to get this Image.

Combination of two images I really liked, but not enough to post them individually. Each had a very different feel from the combination image here, and maybe someday I will let them stand on their own. But for now its time to move on.

I think it can be useful to share this with you to show how I'm

usually editing my photos... Most of the time, I'm simply trying

to remove all the little imperfections from the original pic and I

also spend some time improving the lights, tones, colors and

the general composition of the photo. In the above pic, I have

increased the eyes size, improved the blurred background &

grass and added sharpness to some elements...

I really always want to preserve the "essence" and "spirit"

of the original shot. All the edits I do in post-production

are only meant to express an idea or a message (usually

explained in the title or description of my posts on Flickr).

Long distance ( you can't get closer ) photo of President Bush's house in Kennybunkport, Maine. Although the house stood out, I took some artistic license in adding the clouds and sun and some texture to the rest of the picture. If you mind, Mr. Bush, please post a comment.

All the ozone was gone, and all that remained were the urns of flowers that thrived in the violet sun.

STEP 1

Software: Lightroom

Aerial photographs of two separate scenes are

imported as RAW images into

Lighhtroom. Basic pre-processing such as lens

distortion, vignette removal, white balance tuning and minimal sharpening is applied.

16-bit TIFF files are exported to Photoshop.

STEP 2

Software: Photoshop

Most crucial step in creation of a believable photo-composite is the transparency mask, featured in the center. It separates the foreground (buildings) from the background (desert) layer.

Every composite starts with a clear vision of what needs to be achieved, followed by a tedious painting of the mask.

This task is both creative as well as technical and it takes quite a bit of patience to accomplish.

To create this mask, I used mainly Photoshop’s ‘Lasso’ and Paintbrush tools.

STEP 3

Software: Photoshop

This step is probably the most demanding one; creation of shadows, cast by the buildings onto the dunes in the background. Shadows must follow contour of the terrain. They are obstructed by foreground elements. Their densities and edge sharpness vary depending on their lengths. I used Lasso & Paintbrush tools to create this layer.

STEP 4

Software: Photoshop and NIK Software plugins such as Colour Efex Pro, Viveza and Output Sharpener.

This is where the Photo-composite comes together. All layers are seamlessly fused and blended.

Global Colour Correction is applied on a a single, copy-merged layer. Viveza is used to perform carefully controlled tonal adjustments of the sky and sand.

Color Efex Pro enabled me to create a cinematic look.
