This is Chickaletta our white Silkie chicken. She was attacked late at night by a opossum while roosting in our front porch. This picture shows the damaged eye, waddle, and traces of blood from the torn skin on her neck where the opossum grabbed her. It did not try to kill her right away, instead dragging her towards the woods next to the house. Opossums are nocturnal omnivores and will hunt prey as well as scavenge. They are also the only marsupial indigenous to North America. They move very slowly to not trigger the “chase impulse” in other predators and this is most likely how it was able to sneak up on the chicken. They are about the size of a typical house cat, so a bantam hen would be fairly easy prey. My husband was able to scare it off easily, as opossums are not aggressive. When cornered they will hiss and growl, but rarely attack, and are more likely to “play dead”. They also don’t carry the rabies virus due to low body temperature, but it is still important to see a doctor if bitten. Carrion is on their list of tasty snacks and their mouths are breeding grounds for bacteria. Since they are nomadic creatures we most likely won’t see that particular animal again. www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/st... www.caryinstitute.org/newsroom/opossums-killers-ticks
