Read the story of the EVENT on which I took this pic in Blogger HERE
This was taken during the joint Med Mission of my sister, Dra. Debbie Udarbe, and her best friend, that is considered my other sister, Dra. Rayzen Canono. This is actually the second joint med mission, as the first was held in Tarlac, the hometown of Dra. Canono, and this one in particular is done in Alcala, Pangasinan, my mother's hometown.
It was raining but it didn't bring down the high spirits of the event. It was a success.

The Bessang Pass Natural Monument is a protected area and memorial that commemorates the victory on June 14, 1945 by Filipino soldiers serving the U.S. Army Forces in the Philippines Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL) over the Imperial Japanese Army in the Battle of Bessang Pass which led to Japan's eventual surrender and end to World War II in the Philippines. It covers an area of 693.32 hectares (1,713.2 acres) and a buffer zone of 427.79 hectares (1,057.1 acres) in the municipality of Cervantes in Ilocos Sur. The mountain pass was initially a component of the Tirad Pass National Park, declared in 1938 through Proclamation No. 294 by then President Manuel Luis Quezon. On August 10, 1954, it was established as the Bessang Pass National Shrine with an area of 304 hectares (750 acres) by virtue of Proclamation No. 55 signed by President Ramon Magsaysay. The national shrine was finally declared and reclassified as a natural monument under the National Integrated Protected Areas System in April 2000 through Proclamation No. 284 by President Joseph Estrada.

The sinking belltower of Laoag City. Taken the day before leaving the city. There's always something the day before leaving a place you don't get to visit often. You'll never know if you'll ever get back.
This tower was built by Augustinian Friars in 1612. Its original height was 45 meters, the tallest, largest and most massive in the Philippines. Its design has baroque elements typical in Ilocos. It is built of old brick and stones. The tower rises in four tiers, and the base supports the graduated upper tiers. Access to the top is via a vaulted tunnelleading to a winding wooden stairway. At the top are 6 belts of different sizes. History has it that centuries back, a person on horseback can enter its vaulted entrance without stopping. Today, a person around 5 feet tall hast to stoop to enter. The tower has sunk considerably and evenly, earning the reputation as the sinking belltower.

This Bacarra Church belltower was known as the "bowling acrobatic tower o Southeast Asia". It was called acrobatic because initially, the belltower tilted during an earthquake in 1931, but never fell. In 1989, an earthquake shook Bacarra once more and the tilted topmost portion finally collapsed. The bells are still used up to this day, a rope(visible in the image), is tied to the bell above.
This church is in Bacarra, an old town which was established by the Augustinian mission in 1591. Bacarra Church, was constructed together with the tower and convent by the Spanish Augustinian Friars in 1593, and inaugurated in 1782. It was destroyed by an ntensity 7.8 eathquake on August 1983, was reconstructed and inaugurated a year later.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church
(The "Powdery White" Batac Church)
Its powdery white exterior stands out in an otherwise nondescript city of Batac in the province of Ilocos Norte. Built in the 16th century, the church’s whiteness is due to palitada - a decorative plaster used to protect and decorate soft volcanic stones that form these colonial-era churches. The palitada is a mixture of lime, sand, water, and molasses or egg whites.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion), commonly known as the Santa Maria Church is the parish church of Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur Province, in the northern Philippines. The church was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993 as part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines, a collection of four Baroque Spanish-era churches.
The Santa Maria Church is an attraction to both tourists and Catholics in Ilocos Sur. It is not only a reminiscent of the four centuries of Spanish domination of that area but also a unique structure with a diversified architectural design of bricks and mortar. It was built in 1765 on top of a hill not only as a lookout and a citadel but as a religious center during the early administration of the region by both the friars and soldiers of Spain. Its style is known as Earthquake Baroque due to its massively thick walls engineered to withstand the temblors common to the Pacific Ring of Fire.
