The boiler, frames, cylinders and wheels of rebuilt West Country pacific 34039 Boscastle stand on a siding adjacent to Loughborough Central station sometime in 1974.
Locomotive History
34039 was built by the Southern Railway at Brighton works and entered traffic numbered 21C139 in September 1946, allocated to Stewarts Lane MPD. In November 1948 Boscastle moved to Brighton it became the first West Country class locomotive to carry the new standard British Railways passenger green livery in August, 1949. In 1951 Brighton’s allocation of West Country class locomotives were dispersed and Boscastle was sent in May 1951 for trials on the Eastern Region based a t Stratford. The trial was not a great success due to the crews’ unfamiliarity with this type of locomotive and the problems of getting fitters and spare parts across London when they required attention and Boscastle returned to Brighton in March 1952. In November 1958 “Boscastle” was due for a Heavy General overhaul and was sent to Eastleigh works and emerged in rebuilt form in January, 1959 allocated to Bournemouth. In September, 1962 Boscastle transferred to Eastleigh. The first West Country class withdrawals were in 1963 and in May 1965 Boscastle” was condemned after running some 745,000 miles in its 19 year career. It was sold to Woodham Bros of Barry and arrived in South Wales in September 1965. In November, 1972 Boscastle was bought for preservation and arrived at the Great Central Railway on 22nd January 1973, being the first main line locomotive on the preserved line. Restoration began almost immediately at Loughborough but took far longer than anyone had anticipated and it would be nearly twenty years before on the 7th November 1992 Boscastle moved for the first time under its own power. The engine was withdrawn from traffic in June 2000 and is currently undergoing an overhaul.

One of my early photographs, taken using a Hanimex Compact non SLR “point and shoot” camera with a 40mm lens of dubious quality around the edges of the frame finds 24146 stabled in the shed yard at Birkenhead sometime in 1974.
Locomotive History
24146 was delivered from Derby Works in February 1961 as D5146 and was one of a batch of four locomotives (D5143 – D5146) allocated to Willesden MPD. It transferred to Longsight in October 1964 and to the Stoke Division (Crewe Diesel Depot) in November 1968. It received Rail Blue livery in March 1968 following classified repair at Derby Works. 24146 was withdrawn in January 1976 and after initially being dumped at Basford Hall yard moved to Swindon Works in May 1976 and was broken up during October 1976.

Beach cafe, Mona Vale beach, Sydney, July 2018. Sydney has many beach cafes, the best located ones are often located in the Surf Life Saving Clubs right on the beach. This is a crop from a 35mm frame taken while I was enjoying a coffee in the winter sunshine.
