Bir dönem dairenin her önemli evrağı elimden geçerdi ta ki bilgisayar denilen kendini beğenmiş devre yığını gelene kadar. O geldikten sonra yavaş yavaş bir kenara doğru itildim. Önceleri durmaksızın on parmak kullanılan daktilo gitmiş, yerine nadiren bilgisayar boş değilse ayak sürüyerek kullanılan, antika adledilen ben kalmıştım. Kim bilebilirdi ki meraklı bir çocuğun bana hayatımın ikinci şansını vereceğini?
Babamın işyerine ilk kez gideceğim için heyecanlıydım. Acaba evdekiyle işteki hali birbirine benziyor muydu? Aradaki farkı anlamam uzun sürmedi. Derneğin sürekli gelip giden üyeleriyle o kadar meşguldü ki elime birkaç kağıt verip küçük odadaki daktiloda bir şeyler yazabilme iznini soluklanırken verebildi.
Odaya girdiğinde boş boş dolandı bir süre. Sıkılınca ses çıkarmamaya gayret ederek sandalyeyi çekip oturdu. Odanın ona yabancı oluşu neredeyse boş olmasına eşdeğerdi. Sonrasında tedirgin ama sert bir şekilde E tuşuma bastı. R, D, E ve M onları izledi. Birkaç saat boyunca anlamlı anlamsız sözcükler yazdı. Belli ki yabancısı olduğu tuşlarımla tanışma sürecini hızlı geçmeye kararlıydı. Yüzünde beliren anlık tebessümdü unutulup, bir köşede çürümeye bırakıldığım hissini bertaraf eden. Adının Erdem olduğunu sonradan öğrendiğim bu çocukla tanışmam böyle oldu.
Ne zaman babamın işyerine gitsem artık sormaksızın daktilonun başında buluveriyordum kendimi. Çıkardığı sesleri mi yoksa yazı karakterini mi sevdiğimi bilmiyordum. Sadece o küçük odada daktiloyla geçen zamanın farkına varamıyordum.

Erdem uğramaz olunca büsbütün yalnız kalmıştım. Dairedeki varlığımla yokluğum birdi. Kendimi imha edebileceğim bir tuşum olsa tereddüt etmeksizin basardım. Bir gün apar topar kutuma kaldırıldım. Hiç şüphe yok ki kutum tabutum olacaktı; içinde bakımsızlıktan her geçen an çürüyecektim. Bir yere götürülüyordum ama nereye? Gerçi kullanılmadıktan sonra bu sorunun önemi var mıydı?
Hangi arada kutudan çıkardığımı hatırlamıyorum lakin merakım yerini daha büyük bir şaşkınlığa bıraktı: Bu babamın işyerinde çocukken kullandığım ilk ve tek daktilonun ta kendisiydi.
Bir daha açılmamak üzere üstüme kapanan kutumun kapağı açıldığında yüzündeki gülümsemeden tanıdım onu. Neredeyse tanınmayacak kadar değişmiş ama tebessümünü çocukluktan yetişkinliğe taşıyabilmişti. Hiç vakit kaybetmeden teker teker tuşlarımı denemeye başladı. Her tuştan sonra odada sesin yankılanmasına izin veriyor ve sonrakine geçiyordu. Hepsinin çalıştığından emin olduktan sonra bana masasında yer verdi. Artık bir masa lambasına komşuydum ve daha da önemlisi özgürdüm. Meğer çocuğun bana sunduğu ikinci şans parçalıymış. Odada bir bilgisayar olmasına rağmen, karalamalarını ilk benimle temize çektiğinden varlığını umursamıyorum. Sanırım beni kıskanıyor!... Buluşmalarımızda masa lambasıyla bana birkaç fincan kahve zaman zaman eşlik ediyor ve bir de Erdem'in ağırlaşıp tuşlarıma harf harf düşen düşünceleri.
Karalama kağıdındaki düzensizliği daktilonun rahatlatıcı ritmi ve kahve kokusuyla gidermeye çalışıyorum. Başkalaşımını tamamlayan sözcükler beyin zarımı yırtarak daktilonun üzerine düşüyor. Sesleri odada yankılanırken dışarıdan farkedildiği muamma olan gülümsemenin yüzüme yayıldığını hissediyorum fazlasıyla tanıdık bir o kadar yabancı gelen...
