As I wanted to do some more test shots using the 50D, I yet again called on fellow photogrpaher Kevin O'Mara to be my test subject. He filled the role quite nicely, and I'm sure he'll have a shot or two from the shoot posted on his flickr page soon enough. I'm posting this picture in my "Portraits" set, but I seriously considered posting a couple of the pictures from this shoot in the "Kids" set, because Kevin is just a big kid when you get him in front of a camera.

I'm posting this at full resolution so you can see the noise of the 50D at ISO 400. I did do some minor sharpening in Photoshop on Kevin's right eye because it was a little out of focus (the sharpening is evident when viewed at full resolution).

(forewarning: Flickr has become my blog for 2024)

I posted a few shots back about my "new" Pentax K-5 IIs. Pentax is a name I knew as a kid, well before Nikon and Canon, as my mom had always used her Pentax K1000 from about 1980 up through 2005 when she switched to digital (a Canon PowerShot A580), something she said never was the same as shooting with a "real" camera.

Anyways, while I shot with that old K1000 when I first got into photography, I moved away and into digital myself, getting sucked into all things Nikon, Canon, and Sony. Though I remember seeing some Pentax dSLR's being sold new, they always looked tacky as I mostly remember the ones you could get in various colors. I've always preferred black or silver just because change is scary. Over the years, I would encounter the cult-like following Pentax has on various forums especially the still active Pentax forums. I decided I wanted to go back to my roots and after more than a few dives down the Pentax rabbit hole, I decided why not just get one - they are the only major brand of digital SLR's that I have never tried.

Ordered a Pentax K-5 IIs (s = no AA filter, the first SLR to not employ one) from Japan and only had my mothers old 50mm f/2 from the K1000 (wish I kept the body too!) but I wanted to experience the kit lenses from the era so I ordered a SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL for about $30 and then I wanted to short telephoto kit zoom and I found a good deal on eBay for another 18-55mm, this time the improved SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II (Mark II) and it also included the SMC Pentax-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED, which was used for this image, and all for a whopping $45.

I shot mostly with busted kit lenses for the first 6 years I took pictures with dSLR's, and for the bottom of the barrel kit sets, all of these lenses, especially the 18-55 Mark II, perform better than Nikon and Canon's offerings. That is, of course, excluding mirrorless kit lenses, I know absolutely nothing about those, but for dSLR's this is as good as it gets for cheap kit zoom lenses. I'm not suggesting you buy a kit lens, however, avoid them if you can, they are optically inferior to better lenses. However, in the realm of what they are and their purpose, they can produce some nice shots. This lens, the 50-200, is not sharp but it produces great colors.

I really can not wait to eventually get some of the absolute amazing lenses that Pentax makes and has made. They still produce stunning optics and, of course, everything even back to the Takumar lens days are just great. They are the most underrated brand and their cameras are built like tanks. This is quickly becoming my favorite camera, even more so than my Nikon D610 and Canon 5D Mark III. Not bad for a 12-year-old APS-C body!

Siggi, my dog - today is his 8th birthday

- The Border terrier originated in the border country between England and Scotland, and may be one of the oldest kinds of terriers in Great Britain. Purely a working terrier, the Border was bred to protect the stock of their owners. They had sufficient length of leg to follow a horse, but were small enough to follow a fox to ground. Borders on the farm in the 18th century also had to find their own food, so they had to be good hunters to survive.

- Alert, active and agile, the Border Terrier is willing to squeeze through narrow holes and sprint across any terrain to capture his quarry: the fox. This persistence made him an excellent working terrier back in England, and allows him to succeed in Earthdog, Obedience and Agilty trials today. Known for his "otter" head and game attitude, the Border is medium-sized with a wiry coat that may be red, grizzle and tan, blue and tan, or wheaten with a dark muzzle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
