An ES44AC led "Z" train rips past a waiting eastbound GE C44-9W at Elva Road near Steward on the BNSF Aurora sub. The crew of 969 was outside waiting for the pass. One crewmember told me that the air conditioning was inop on this hot day. He wanted to go fast with the windows open.

This is at the Elva Road grade crossing, just northwest of Steward. A few miles behind 969, on the same track was the "Savanna-Eola" train, also waiting for two westbounds.

Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) savanna on Fort Lewis. As with nearby prairies, oak savannas and woodlands in Washington have experienced drastic loss of extent and have been heavily impacted by fire suppression, grazing, and non-native species. Fort Lewis supports the best examples of oak woodland and savanna remaining in Washington.

Yes, I am headed for Greece! I also made sure to upgrade to Premium Plus, United's international premium economy product, hence the purple background and seats.

Sadly my seat had a broken tray table, complete with an "INOP" sticker from maintenance, which meant I had to eat my meals on my lap - it certainly soured my experience, but I received a compensation.

Diagnostic Description:

This species was entirely misunderstood by Sonder and none of the specimens cited by him belongs here, but rather to "Oxalis depressa Eckl. et Zeyh., 1835", quite a different plant. The true "Oxalis convexula Jacq." may be distinguished from these by its marked succulence, paler bulb with thinner and rougher tunics, thick exserted stem, larger epidermal cells in the leaflets and salmon-pink corolla with a shorter tube and exserted stamens. It has also been confused with "Oxalis obliquifolia Steud. ex A.Rich., 1847". This species is extremely tenacious of life and specimens, unless poisoned, continue to grow for some time in a botanical press.

Provided by: e-Flora of South Africa.

----------------------------------------------

Morphology

Usually caulescent geophyte to 14 cm, with shallow bulb. Leaves trifoliolate, small, fleshy, forming an umbrella-like rosette, leaflets subrotund, with large epidermal cells. Flowers salmon-pink with yellow tube. Erect, rather succulent, 4-14 cm high, entirely glabrous, usually with a well-developed and sometimes branched stem. Bulb narrow-ovoid, attenuate or subrostrate at the apex, 2-3 cm long, the older often persisting on the rhizome through the action of the contractile root; tunics imbricating, rather thin, rough, reddish-brown. Stem thick, 2-5 cm long or rarely not exserted. Leaves often numerous, short and closely congested or spreading, up to 5 cm long; petioles dilated into prominent submembranaceous stipuliform wings below the articulation; leaflets 3, thick, fleshy, entire, the medial shortly petiolulate, subrotund, widely attenuate at the base, 4-10 mm long, 5-12 mm broad, the lateral obliquely rotund or sub-semicircular, rather smaller, conspicuously impresso-punctate on both sides (very irregularly on the scurfy lower surface) when dry. Peduncles 1-fld., 1-5 cm long, usually longer than the leaves, with 2 alternate linear or oblanceolate membranous bracts towards the calyx. Sepals ovate or oblong-ovate, obtuse, submembranaceous, 3-5.5 mm long, ecallose. Corolla 1.6-2.6 cm long, pale salmon-rose, with a short widely funnel-shaped yellow tube; laminae of the petals broadly and obliquely cuneate or subtriangular, obliquely truncate, twice or three times as long as the attenuate claw. Filaments, the shorter 2.5-4 mm, the longer 4-8.5 mm long, minutely glandular, edentate, the longest exserted from the corolla tube. Ovary oblong, sometimes minutely glandular-pilose on the upper half, ecallose, the chambers about 18-ovuled; styles sparsely and minutely glandular-pilose.

----------------------------------------------

"Oxalis convexula Jacq." is a winter spring bloomer with rosy-salmon flowers with a yellow throat. Leaflets are in threes, thick and fleshy. The flowers need warmth to open. The original single bulb managed to form about 80 bulbs in these four years. They write that plants grow up to 15 cm tall with a short stem at the base and 3 almost round succulent leaflets, and one salmon pink to orange flower with a yellow center per stalk. There, additional warmth is present and blooming begins in October or November. The plants form multiple small bulbils clustered about the axis of the flower stems. These are deposited on the ground below the plants and, in areas such as San Diego, they produce large numbers of plantlets either in spring or in the fall. If not destroyed, they produce within several months a new crop of flowering specimens. The temptation to permit this attractive species to bloom should be overcome as the weedy behavior can lead quickly to numbers that are difficult to contain." Tim Harvey, also living in Southern California, but more inland, had some planted in the ground for 7-8 years and reported it was definitely not invasive. To propagate it he had to save bulbils in the spring and plant in fall. He believed they did not survive the heat of summer. However, in his Accession Number inventory of Oxalis, Michael Vassar cautions that for each of the forms of this species listed there, many bulbils are formed. Michael lived and grew his plants just north of Los Angeles. Mary Sue Ittner in Northern California struggles to keep hers going and unlike many other species does not find there are extras to share with others. Diana Chapman who grows hers in pots in a very large greenhouse in Northern California does observe the bulbils and provides some useful guidance: " A tip for dealing with aerial bulbils produced by "Oxalis convexula Jacq." and others. Vacuum them up before they have a chance to blow around." Christiaan van Schalkwyk reported that this species has never formed axial bulbs in his garden in South Africa, but noted that Salter in his monograph stated that it was such a vigorous plant, that it kept growing in between the pages of his press. He had to poison it in order to make herbarium specimens. So, the species seems to thrive under certain conditions, but not others.
