The Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal, which is classified as a World Heritage Site by Unesco within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra".

The Initiation Wells (also called initiatic wells or inverted towers) are two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers lined with stairs. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were purportedly used for ceremonial purposes. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.

Of the two wells, the larger one contains a 27-metre spiral staircase with 23 small niches on the side. The nine flights of stairs could be linked to the Knights Templar, which had nine founders. They might also symbolize the 9 levels of Hell from Dantes’ Inferno. At the bottom of the well is an inland stone compass with the Templar cross. Other references may be to Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism rituals.

Templar Connections:

Some believe the well and other features at Quinta da Regaleira, like the Inverted Tower or "Initiation Well," are linked to the Knights Templar, a Catholic military order.

Masonic Rituals:

The well's spiral staircase and underground labyrinth are also seen as reminiscent of Masonic initiation rituals, where candidates would descend into darkness and emerge reborn.

Other Interpretations:

Some also suggest the well's design and symbolism are linked to Dante's Inferno, tarot mysticism, or even the Order of Chris

was in Lisbon for a few days some months ago and went to visit Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra.. we spent a few hours wandering through the beautiful gardens and its gothic mansion...lingering awhile at the so-called well of initiation and its inter connected tunnels grottos and water – features..it’s said to have masonic/esoteric correspondences ,if you buy into that way of thinking..

This is the 'Initiation Well' in the occult themed garden at La Quinta De Regaleira, in Sintra, Portugal. The garden is full of occult symbolism and tunnels, waterfalls and grottos.

This is more of an inverted tower than an actual well, as it was never used for water purposes but for initiation rites related to Tarot mysticism.

Storm initiation in southwestern France, in evening hours. Storm explode sunddenly, and will become supercell a fews kilometers to the northwest. This stormchase begin very well, because I'm in good position from the storms, but the rain's catching up to me fast, so it'll be time to go.

The Initiation Well is one of many interesting things to see and experience at the Quinta da Regaleir grounds.

This is a subterranean tower which sinks 27 meters into the hillside.

You can access the well from the bottom at the Portal of the Guardians entrance or through the connecting cave tunnels. There is another entrance at the topside.

This is the view from the topside.

The well is lined with stone walls and is large enough to support a spiral staircase which winds its way from top to bottom.

Looking for a new apprentice, Count Dooku travels to Rattatak where Asajj Ventress proves herself to him by defeating an entire gladiatorial arena full of various beasts, droids, and warriors.

A sculpture depicting a ritual involving two adults, a baby, and a large vessel. The artist, Mike Gyampo, has named it "initiation."

Quinta da Regaleira is a fantastic nineteenth century palace in Sintra, Portugal; built by millionaire Carvalho Monteiro, who made his money in trade with Brazil, with the help of Italian architect Luigi Manini, it hides multiple symbols having to do with alchemy, Masonic rituals , Knights Templar and Rosa-cruz.

The Initiation Well with its ritual initiation spiral staircase is believed to have been used in Masonic initiation rituals, connected with the earth, where live begin and ends. The well has been built using stones and rocks brought from the seaside near Peniche, 150 Km north of Lisbon. and is interconnected by numerous man made tunnels. These rocks and stones give to the well and its tunnels a feeling of being part of an underwater World.

The initiation well has been built uphill from the palace www.flickr.com/photos/antoniovi/386420188/ , which is also quite enigmatic and full of symbology.

Into the Sisterhood

1/365

It's my 19th birthday today and I started the day with running down to the ocean in the rain to take the first picture of my 365 days. I'm really doing this. I'm recording my 20th turn around the sun.

I wanted a picture that would be really "me" to start off this project. And there's no place else I feel more like myself than when I'm by the ocean.

So here I go. 365 days of photography.
