Climbing toward the Upper Falls and railroad bridge

It is a long climb up a stone stairway with many switchbacks to get from the Middle Fall area to the level of the railroad bridge.

Lynchburg, VA Amtrak Station. Heading north on Amtrak Train 20.

It had been a long night. Train 20 was about four hours behind schedule getting into Gainesville, having been stuck behind freight congestion south of Atlanta. Amtrak does not own the tracks for this stretch, meaning that the freight trains get top priority. I was thankful to have a sleeper; at least I had a bed waiting for me. I got up in time to catch the tail end of breakfast.

I was not feeling terribly creative. I decided I would do a project of photographing whatever was outside my window when the train stopped. (Taking pinhole photographs from a moving train is more than a little challenging.)

Row of tombs at the 'Old North' Weymouth Cemetery. I cropped this image quite a bit and the lighting was so-so, but mostly I was looking for even sharpness across the breadth of the image, which (happily) seems to be the case.

Gotta love a shiny bar. Heroes Brewing, of course, for the @deviantArt WeeklyFotoChallenge of 'bar'.

Fifty years ago today, I soloed an Army TH-55 helicopter at Fort Wolters, Texas. In honor of the occasion I decided to take my flight school mug along to the various watering holes I frequent for a photo series.

The ones we flew were bright orange. They were affectionately(?) referred to as LOBs, Little Orange Bastard. Half a dozen of them bobbing up and down as they waited in line for takeoff clearance was quite the sight to see.

Wildflower explosion.

Milady planted a couple sections of our back yard with wildflower seed packets. They bloomed late and long. There is still color out there today even as the rest fades to November gray.

The white blotches are long-stemmed flowers swaying in the light breeze. They are never still.

How terribly strange to be seventy four.

Out on the dock which seems so solid. The Canandaigua Lady sits in her moorings. Everything in focus, everything a bit fuzzy. 'Tis the nature of pinhole cameras. 'Tis the nature of finding myself at seventy four.

How terribly strange to be seventy four. On this June 16, May 7, when I took these photographs, seems a long time ago.

On the other hand, I have enjoyed every age that I have been. I expect to enjoy being seventy four.

In early May I drove down to Canandaigua, New York for an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon about my weird knee, which turned out to be a bone on bone right hip.

I was not going to drive that far and not stop at a local brewery. It was a Monday; the brewery that was open was Twisted Rail Brewing at the north end of Canandaigua Lake. It was a beautiful day. I drank my beer and ate my tacos out on the deck then went wandering.

Woods and water, snow and clouds.

I finally got back down to the Gibsonville trail at Letchworth State Park yesterday afternoon. It felt good to have a pack on my back and a path under my feet.

"Say no more," she said.

There was bush overhanging the lawn next to the sidewalk.

Said I, "One of you needs to lie down under that bush and take a photograph straight up."

Three of the young ladies gave me dirty looks. Not this one.

"Say no more," she said, as she lay back with her skateboard under her head.

As I look at this again, what strikes me is the blandness and beauty of everyday life. The difference is whether I keep my eyes and heart open to see what is there.

Picture 3/3 - The High Line, New York City linear park.

www.thehighline.org/

While in New York City I had the privilege of walking the entire length of the High Line park. The High Line is a 1-mile long section of the former elevated New York Central Railroad which has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway. The High Line Park currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, up to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center. This was taken somewhere along the line. I'm sure New Yorkers will know precisely where. The recycling of the railway into an urban park has spurred real estate development in the neighborhoods which lie along the line.
