There are several large birds of prey in this relatively not so densely inhabited area of Switzerland - but I never really seem to have the right lens on my camera when they show themselves. Neither did I this time, but at least I had the 70-200mm lens and a 2x extender with me, and had the time to exchange lenses while this beauty patiently sat on top of a tree. Cropped, no other editing. The only other bird of prey I've had recognized from a photo around here before was a Red Kite. Thanks for Mike from #ID Please for having confirmed that this, too, is a Red Kite (Milvus milvus) - much appreciated!

I'm off today to meet some bears and wolves. See you tonight/tomorrow! :) Have a nice Sunday!

Thanks for the ID Barboi,
Has big thorny-thorns completely covering its trunk, these ones in a neighbor's garden [Alameda, Calif.] are maybe two feet tall. Medium waxy leaves that are usually a gorgeous green though some of them are slightly reddish now. I seem to remember them blooming later last year.
And I just bought a teeny one at Trader Joe's that seems to be doing fine in my overheated, nearly sunless this time of year dining room. They also had some with white or yellow flowers.

I found this little bone...part of a spine, I think...on the rocky shore of Lake Huron as i walked on Saturday afternoon...... below you see it with a ruler to give scale...( I think I have had this ruler since very early childhood...)
I have no idea what the little solid white globules are on the articulating surface of the bones....besides beautiful.... like little pearls !!!
and I would VERY much appreciate any clues as to what I have found...thank you !

I was out walking the neighbourhood today when I spotted this insect. At first I thought it was a wasp, but the more I looked at it, I thought it was a bee. The only problem is - it is huge and was so heavy that the stems of the flowers had trouble holding up the weight. I think the flowers are called Easter daisies - the flowers are about 3 cms wide, which would make the insect at least 5 cms. What does everyone think it is?? It was so big that it didn't have to fly to get onto other flowers, it just reached over, as you can see by the next photo. These are SOOC, only cropped. I have been told that it is a Female Scoliid Wasp, but this one was bigger than those in the descriptions that I have found on the internet. Thank you ozymiles, I think I agree it is a Hairy Flower Wasp. See link: www.lochmantransparencies.com/p3084/hairy-flower-wasp

a fungus I've been watching for several days now....and I have NO idea at all...even where it belongs in a handy category in my well-organized Barron book of Mushrooms Ontario&Eastern Canada.
As you will see in the photos below...the surface is now covered with velvet...smooth a couple of days ago. This clump is at the foot of a pair of large pine trees, on a well-travelled path, and so far no-one has vandalized this beautiful specimen.
If you have any idea what this is...please tell me !

when a little sunlight hits these "Doll's Eyes Berries"....in the woods...it looks like a torch...the trouble is, I can't remember what the flowers look like , in the spring when they bloom...so this is not really the name !

I have never done a spore print with a result like this...how ???
I left it in place for several days... and during the undisturbed time, the mushrooms shrank considerably...as you can see...and the WHITE spore print left a lot of spores !!! In the usual 24 hour period...you would see nothing...but the extended time made a big difference
below it, you see the mushroom on the day I picked it...I am still unsure just what this common mushroom is...in our mixed woodland, in SW Ontario .
ID Please would be GREATLY appreciated!
Explore #212, Apr 26, 2008... Thanks to Joy Gant for the ID... it is Ipheion uniflorum of the Aliaceae family, Spring Starflower.

I don't know whether this turned out too dark, I mostly try not to edit too much, but I wanted this to be gloomy, not pale ;)
Oh, and I need a, um, swiveling display.. or old trousers. I had a hard time getting an okayish crop (detail? What is the correct English word for "Ausschnitt" - chosen before taking the photo, not afterwards?)
And while we're at it, I need a bag (crumpler messenger boy 5500), a filter, a tripod, .......
Don't know the ID of this bird (update, ID provided by Anuj, thanks), but i have observed these couple of time earlier but never was able to take a shot. They are alert and quick and fly away before I could go near and point my lens to them. Fortunately i found them far top on one tree nesting. Its a cropped version.

The reason I am not certain what it is, is due to the lack of the white spot usually on the back of the bill on the Scaup females. The only other duck that fits is the very rare Tufted duck. But it doesn't seem to have a tuft?

Would love to get an ID for this little butterfly. Looks like skipper and looked to be about 2" to 2.5" wing tip to tip. It was taken In Cobourg Ontario, Canada.
