Hydrangea arborescens 'Abetwo' was developed (pp20571, 2009) by Timothy D. Wood from Spring Meadow Nursery of Grand Haven, Michigan. 'Abetwo' originated from an open pollination of 'Annabelle' (parent) and an unknown H. arborescens in 2002. Compared to Hydrangea 'Annabelle', it is taller, has larger flower heads, and thicker stems that do not splay when wet. The flowers start out lime green and mature to pure white. Blooms in early June for ~ two months.

American Hydrangea, aka Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), a shrub native to the eastern United States is on the left. The yellow flowered Kalm's St. John's Wort, (Hypericum kalmianum 'Gemo'), a midwestern native, is on the right. Both shrubs attract an incredible number of bees and other insects.

Very dramatic looking little shrubs growing in moist areas in relatively good quality shady woods. This one was part of a community emerging from eroding cliffs around a small waterfall. The stream fed into the Potomac river only a dozen or so meters away.
The plaque read, "'Annabelle' is a cultivated form of H. arborenscens with completely sterile flowers (meaning no food for pollinators). We like to combine the natural species with the cultivar to get the best of both worlds. 'Annabelle' provides the show, while the natural species provides the food." However, I notice a pollinator was visiting the flowers of this cultivar! Hmmm - maybe it did not stay for long...
Back up to Persimmon Ridge Road in Greenville County, South Carolina. It seems that there is always something in bloom during the non-winter seasons. Today, we found more Asclepias tuberosus (Milkweed). In addition, we found a large population of Hydrangea arborescens (Wild Hydrangea). What appears to be flowers along the outside edges are actually sterile flowers. Those smaller flowers toward the center of the inflorescence are the ones that the bees are interested in. It is a very showy native plant...
