Wild hydrangea seed heads.

Does anyone of you know, how this plant is called? I always forget the name...

Hydrangea - thanks!

Hydrangea arborescens in my native wildflower garden. Webster Groves, Missouri.

This wonderful blue of marvellous Hydrangeas (macrophylla) matched the sublime blue sky when my new Sony T900 registered this photo in the Lincoln Park Conservatory at Chicago, USA.

The name 'large-leafed hydrangea' conjured up in my mind its etymology: Carolus Linnaeus (1753), following Jan Frederick Gronovius (1686-1762), composed the name from the Greek words for 'water' and for 'vessel', because the seed capsules reminded him of Greek Jars. Indeed, when they open up - 'yawn'; Yawning Ewers, as it were - they do in their dehiscence resemble those jars. The Hydrangea they described is in fact the North-American 'arborescens'

The great garden flowers above - Hydrangea macrophylla - originally derive from Japan, where they are called 'rain flowers'- Ajisai -, a name that fits well with jars as collectors of liquid.

Now for a drink...

I puzzled over this shrub in bloom in the Roan Mountain area (Tennessee, USA) on 7 July 2020. I initially thought it was a Viburnum species, but something was not quite right. An astute observer on iNaturalist corrected me at last. This is:

Wild Hydrangea - Hydrangea arborescens

I was expecting Hydrangea to have large sterile flowers around the edge of the cluster, but these are not always present. I should have looked more closely at the flowers--they have 8-10 stamens, characteristic of Hydrangea, while Viburnums have 5 stamens. If I had looked at my trusty Newcomb's Wildflower Guide for this one, I would have not gone astray, as that is highlighted as the difference between Hydrangea and Viburnums, otherwise similar in overall flower arrangement, branching (opposite), and foliage.

It lacks the large outer sterile bracts that one would expect on this species, but apparently some wild populations lack those.

Near the George Observatory at the Brazos Bend State is an open field. At this time of year it is covered with flowers.

The windmill at the Brazos Bend State Park Nature Center still functions, filling the tank, which in turn provides water for a flower garden. The garden is planted to provide flowers for most of the Spring and Summer.

Daddy-Long-Legs or Harvestman visits Wild hydrangea, June, Missouri. Wild hydrangea is very popular with native bees and pollinators.

The plaque read, "'Annabelle' is a cultivated form of H. arborenscens with completely sterile flowers (meaning no food for pollinators). We like to combine the natural species with the cultivar to get the best of both worlds. 'Annabelle' provides the show, while the natural species provides the food." However, I notice a pollinator was visiting the flowers of this cultivar! Hmmm - maybe it did not stay for long...

Common name: Little Ladies'-tresses

Photographed in Mt. Magazine State Park, Logan County, Arkansas

Il nome ha origine latina, significa "che cura orti e giardini". Ortensia era anche un soprannome di Venere. Per il periodo della sua fioritura, da marzo in poi, è considerata il simbolo di Pasqua.

"Morning has broken, like the first morning

Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird

Praise for the singing, praise for the morning

Praise for the springing fresh from the world..."

Hydrangea arborescens 'Abetwo' was developed (pp20571, 2009) by Timothy D. Wood from Spring Meadow Nursery of Grand Haven, Michigan. 'Abetwo' originated from an open pollination of 'Annabelle' (parent) and an unknown H. arborescens in 2002. Compared to Hydrangea 'Annabelle', it is taller, has larger flower heads, and thicker stems that do not splay when wet. The flowers start out lime green and mature to pure white. Blooms in early June for ~ two months.
