Hortensia (Hydrangea) is een geslacht bloeiende planten uit de hortensiafamilie (Hydrangeaceae). Er zijn ongeveer 100 soorten verspreid over de hele wereld, waarvan sommige in het wild voorkomen. Vooral in China en Japan komen hortensia's veel voor.
De bloemen zijn roze, paars, wit of blauw afhankelijk van het pH (zuurgraad) van de bodem: In zure gronden worden de bloemen blauw, in basische gronden roze en in pH-neutrale bodems paars. uit: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hortensia
This hydrangea shot is 100% inspired by some of the incredible hydrangea shots I've seen from Japan this spring/summer. A worthy attempt, I suppose, but I don't think I'll ever be able to capture the beauty of the hydrangea the way the Japanese can.

Hydrangea flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flowerheads (corymbs or panicles) most often at the ends of the stems. Typically the flowerheads contain two types of flowers: small non-showy flowers in the center or interior of the flowerhead, and large, showy flowers with large colorful sepals (tepals). These showy flowers are often extended in a ring, or to the exterior of the small flowers. Plants in wild populations typically have few to none of the showy flowers, while cultivated hydrangeas have been bred and selected to have more of the larger type flowers.
The name Hydrangea is derived from Greek and means ‘water vessel’ (hydria), in reference to the shape of its seed capsules.

All over Maine we saw beautiful Hydrangea Trees, bushes. hedges in full bloom. They were amazing! We have some Hydrangea bushes but they stay small. I don't know what variety these were but obviously you can train them into anything. This Hydrangea hedge outside of Augusta Maine borders a Cemetery and stands at least 8-10 ft tall!!!
