Hydrangeas seem to grow semi-naturally in Madeira. Not sure when the growing season is though - pretty unusual to see one in this state in February
Hydrangea color can be changed from pink to blue or blue to pink by rising and lowering the PH of the soil. On adds aluminum sulphate to bring the flowers to blue. Also adding organic matter to the soil helps the plant use the aluminum. To turn a plant pink is more difficult since the PH needs to be raised to help prevent the plant from taking up aluminum. Dolomitic lime can also be added to the soil for this purpose. This plant was a brilliant pink! apparently a hard color to achieve in Florida except in pots.
I've posted the raw shot of this Lace-cap Hydrangea before (see Page 6 of my Photostream), but did some processing on it now to get rid of the wall behind. I upped the shadows almost all the way, and brought up the fill light to bring back the flower. It think it turned out at least interesting.
Autumn in my garden - Hydrangeas changing colors

I really like hydrangeas and the shades of colour sometimes found in just one flower cluster.
It's come to my attention that I've grown three hydrangeas to the point of being too big to live in a pot. In each case I've given the plant away to someone who will put it in the ground.
They grow consistently well for me and here is plant #4 bought since I moved here in December of 2013.
My hydrangeas faded horribly - then this one has changed to its autumn colours & almost returned to its original deep red.
