Hydrangeas seem to grow semi-naturally in Madeira. Not sure when the growing season is though - pretty unusual to see one in this state in February

Hydrangea , commonly named the hortensia, is a genus of more than 70 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in) tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (100 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

Hydrangea flower colour can change based on the pH in soil.

soil with a pH of 5.5 or lower will produce blue flowers, a pH of 6.5 or higher will produce pink hydrangeas, and soil in between 5.5 and 6.5 will have purple hydrangeas. White hydrangeas cannot be colour-manipulated by soil pH because they do not produce pigment for colour.

I appreciate that in my neighborhood many of the homes show gardens in what Americans call "the front yard", rather than having all the horticulture being in the private space behind the house. Most of these are very small (this being a city, albeit a fairly green one [lots of purposely planted trees]) but they provide interest and beauty for the walker and passerby.

our Hydrangea is a mass of flowers this time of year

Hydrangea color can be changed from pink to blue or blue to pink by rising and lowering the PH of the soil. On adds aluminum sulphate to bring the flowers to blue. Also adding organic matter to the soil helps the plant use the aluminum. To turn a plant pink is more difficult since the PH needs to be raised to help prevent the plant from taking up aluminum. Dolomitic lime can also be added to the soil for this purpose. This plant was a brilliant pink! apparently a hard color to achieve in Florida except in pots.

NORMALLY a girl or woman with an exaggerated sense of self-importance HERE a flower requiring a great deal of attention and excessive effort to maintain beauty, style and image.

A diva is not necessarily difficult to work with, she is just very professional and and has a low tolerance for incompetence...

Yes I was listening again to what this flower had to say, quite obvious he? Between you and me, sshhhh, a bit of a drama queen really! LOL!

Playing with lights again...

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Taube':

alkaline soils encourage pinker blooms and acid soils bluer.

“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment.

I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower.

I want them to see it whether they want to or not.”

Hydrangea

Hydrangea (/ha?'dre?nd?i?/;[1] common names hydrangea or hortensia) is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably Korea, China, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (98 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.[2]

Having been introduced to the Azores, H. macrophylla is now very common, particularly on Faial, which is known as the "blue island" due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island.[citation needed]

‘Hydrangea’ is derived from Greek and means ‘water vessel’, which is in reference to the shape of its seed capsules.[3] The earlier name, Hortensia, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, referring to the wife of Jean-André Lepaute.[4]

Peegee Hydrangea

Even if you don't recognize this shrub's singsong name, you've likely encountered this gorgeous hydrangea in a Southern garden or two. Peegee hydrangea is a popular selection of Hydrangea paniculata, which takes the form of a shrub or a small tree. It is one of the most popular and widely grown of the panicle hydrangeas, and it is also known as ‘Grandiflora.' Peegee hydrangea is often grown as an upright tree; it can be trained to heights of up to 25 feet tall, but it is most often found growing at heights of 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Because of its height and spread, it is sometimes used as a hedge planting.

The foliage of peegee hydrangea is attractive, with dark green, oval leaves, each of which ends in a point and turns bronze in the autumn months. Peegee hydrangea also produces showy white blooms throughout its flowering season, which is one of the big draws in planting this particular selection of hydrangea. Big clusters of white flowers bloom out in a stunning spray, and then they fade to pink, bronze, and brown as they age.

This hydrangea thrives in full sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil that's attended by regular watering. It's a hardy, fast-growing planting, and it's also eye-catching when it blooms. Hydrangea paniculata blooms on new growth, so it requires some pruning in late winter. This is a great hydrangea for beginners because it's so easy to grow and is a relatively forgiving shrub in terms of care and environment.

The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.

Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.

Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.

Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.

So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

HYDRANGEA - Thank You for Understanding.

Have a wonderful day and thank you for your comments with all my heart, M, (*_*)

I've posted the raw shot of this Lace-cap Hydrangea before (see Page 6 of my Photostream), but did some processing on it now to get rid of the wall behind. I upped the shadows almost all the way, and brought up the fill light to bring back the flower. It think it turned out at least interesting.
