The history of the ferret's domestication is uncertain, like that of most other domestic animals. It is very likely that ferrets have been domesticated for at least 2,500 years. They are still used for hunting rabbits in some parts of the world today, but increasingly they are being kept simply as pets.
Arnie was a wonderful cat, a classic marmalade Tom - independent, determined, incredibly affectionate & yet still quite wild - and pretty thick, but this just added to his charm! He was loved by all who came into contact with him - and that was a lot of people, as he was a great roamer. He arrived with us by accident, or more properly by his determination, as a little ginger ball of kitten fur, appearing through our catflap & becoming the best of friends with Merlin, our own young kitten at the time. He had on him a collar with a name-tag and address, so we returned him to his owners in the adjacent street, but he kept coming back....they didn't seem too worried, and said each time "Oh, no doubt he'll be back with you"...in the end, we just let him stay, though we renamed him Arnie, from the above phrase, as his given name of Tibbles just didn't suit.
He lived over thirteen very full & happy years, gradually turning from a fluffy red ball into a more threadbare old gentleman, still hunting (rabbits were his favourite) and making friends - and extra food stops - all over the place. In the end, at the very end of the summer of 2006, his kidneys gave way & he lost control of his bladder, so sadly his time had arrived. But he will never be forgotten - and not just by us, it seems..
Rest in Peace, Arnie - and thanks for all you gave us. You really were the Best of Cats...
Endless Caverns is a commercial show cave located three miles south of New Market, Virginia. The cave was discovered in October, 1879 by two boys who were hunting rabbits on the farm of Ruben Zirkle. Not long after the discovery, the Zirkles began doing candle lit tours through the cave. In 1919, the cave was bought by Colonel E.T. Brown, who had the cave fully wired and lights installed. Endless Caverns opened to the public as a show cave on August 14, 1920. The present mapped extent of the cave is six miles, making Endless Caverns one of the larger caves in Virginia.
Didn't catch any, but sure had fun chasing. (This is my first try with Adobe LightRoom 2.2, still using Elements 7 for final edits.)

Being a wild kid is fun
because I can jump from
tree to tree,
swing from vine,
loving hunting rabbits,
trust in having fun.
Both Fleck and Floss came from a rescue centre. They were brought over from Ireland where there are large numbers of unwanted collies. Fleck had been well looked after, but Floss had been left to find her own food. Although she has calmed down in the seven years we have had the pleasure of her company, she was a practised hunter and found little problem in hunting rabbits and squirrels.
Harris's hawks are among the only birds of prey to hunt in groups. These three were hunting rabbits with a falconer in Dartmoor, England.
bunnies live here... i made the mistake of not collecting the ball the last time we were here, and walter went running up to 'check' (a keyword associated with CATS, bunnies, dickies or people), opened his mouth and the ball went rolling - under the fence, for about 10 feet
i couldn't get in - did consider going over the barbed wire for all of a minute, and walter is NUTS with the yelling - can't let those bunnies have his BALL, noway jose
an effin expensive american$$$ ball, our black hole, and no freakin bunnies are gonna keep us from that (that and w needed to run for at least another hour - no way to do that without a ball)
i put my back into it, bending the gate open just enough for walter to squeeze inside... can you see the next, more problematic dilemna coming?
so he's in, and he grabs his coveted ball and absconds - all before i have time to straighten up/turn around... turn around to an empty-of-dog compound as he's off in the crap hunting rabbits...
i call and he appears (thank god for practice), wearing a wicked grin - mouth empty, of course and then i really start to wonder... as he promptly turns back to sniffing the hallowed hunting grounds... god i am dumb! not only have i lost the ball, now my dog is locked up tight
the next commands out of my mouth (and i'm trying to be reasonable/not too demanding - no way to reinforce anything here) are 'find it' and 'bring it' and blow-me-over if he doesn't actually manage to do both! excepting the bring is still a good five feet out of reach... so, out comes the treats and another, more desperate plea (one that he understands and really loves to ignore), 'closer'...
and it works! (but not immediately, his closer would drop the ball closer, and have it roll back out of reach more than once) and i now have the coveted ball! now i'm only missing the dog
it took twice as long to coax him out (had to put my back to him and into the gate again)... this time i made sure the ball was in my pocket
A pet ferret (most are now) with the formal name "Mustela putorius furo: They were commonly used for hunting rabbits when I was a child in England.
