Our little friend is back! We've tried everything to attract hummingbirds to our backyard and the crocosmia did the trick!
This Anna's is a lifer of mine. It was also the first time for me to be so close to a Hummingbird that I had to back away to get it focused. I had a blast taking his pictures! More images will be posted after my 2-week absence.
San Jorge de Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary is located at 5,580 ft. MSL. This Hummingbird Sanctuary is part of the ChocĂł Bird Area of N.W. Ecuador, where as many as 500 species have been reported. The trails around the lodge and the open-air Hummingbird dining room provide some superb opportunities to observe 65 and photograph more than 20 species of woodcreepers, nectar, and fruit-eating birds who come to the feeders. This is the most diverse bird destination that we will visit in our itinerary. Here we will actively put into action our 2 multi-flash setups and capture some fascinating images of the stunning hummingbirds at the lodge.
I can guarantee you, this will be one of the most productive photographic experiences that you will have in the Neotropics. At night, we will go back to the feeders to look for the famous olinguito, a "new" species of mammal new to science and revealed by biologists in 2013. Tandayapa is a magical hidden nature oasis.

Something unique to experience.
They are set up on the top of a hill and provide an outstanding view of all the mountains and surrounding valleys such as the heart of Tandayapa Valley, including the old road to Nono -Tandayapa- Mindo now known as the Hummingbird Route. Nearby is the protected Nambillo Mindo Protected Forest, several private reserves, and small villages including Nanegalito, Nanegal, Mindo, and Gualea. The area has vast protected areas of Highland Rain Forest and Subtropical Cloud Forest. Unique to the zone is the transition step from Highland Rainforest to Subtropical Forest, located at 2500 meters.
There are some places on earth where you can feel the grandiose power of nature in full splendor, The Tandayapa Valley Cloud Forest is one of them, where bizarre and phenomenal creatures thrive in the magnificent forest cathedrals, immersed in the ChocĂł bioregion. The astonishing canyons and gigantic trees are one of the most impressive landscapes that I have ever seen. Even though I was 5,000 miles away in an isolated wilderness, I could not avoid the feeling of being perfectly at home. My familiarity with the Neotropical Rainforests may be the simplest explanation for those feelings.

Although there are 4 or 5 Anna's Hummingbirds that stay through the winter, the Rufous wait til spring. I was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to appear. I'm looking forward to following them around trying to get that perfection shot while they are going a million miles an hour.
