Irvin McDowell was infamous as the leader of the Union Army during the humiliating defeat in the first battle of the American Civil War at Bull Run.

Irvin McDowell was a career Army officer who taught tactics at West Point and was aide-de-camp to General John E. Wool during the Mexican-American War. During the American Civil War, Brig Gen Irvin McDowell was appointed commander of the Army of Northeastern Virginia, despite his protests at having never commanded troops in battle. This was possibly done at the request of his patron Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase. Despite his continued protests that his green troops were unready, McDowell was driven by political pressure to attack the Confederate forces at Manassas. While McDowell displayed imaginative tactics in generalship the subsequent Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, ended in disaster as his green troops ended up being routed from the field. Under his successor Maj Gen George McClellan, McDowell was appointed commander of the I Corps of the reorganized Army of the Potomac. With 40000 troops, he was supposed to join McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, only to be rerouted again due to political pressure, to defend Washington DC and block the Confederate forces wrecking havoc in the Shenandoah Valley under Maj Gen Thomas Jackson. Eventually he was appointed commander of the reorganized (again) III Corps of the Army of Virgina under Maj John Pope. He preformed capably enough at the Battle of Cedar Mountain but preformed exceedingly poorly at the Second Battle of Bull Run, acting indecisively, uncommunicative, and inept, leaving the army flank dangerously exposed. McDowell escaped censure by supporting Pope's accusation of his subordinate Fitz John Porter, leading to the latter's court-martial. Nevertheless his military career was over. McDowell was appointed commander of the Dept of the Pacific (later the Dept of California) for the remainder of the war. After the War he was commander of the Dept of the East, the Military Division of the South and finally back to the Military Division of the Pacific. In 1879 the Board of Review commissioned by President Rutherford B. Hayes on the Court Martial of Fitz John Porter recommended a pardon for the latter, assigning most of the blame for Second Bull Run on McDowell, causing McDowell's reputation to drop considerably. Following his retirement, Irvin McDowell became Park Commissioner of San Francisco, showing a love for landscaping.

Stereoscopic photographing was a procedure invented in the 1850s giving a striking relief effect. It became obsolete in the 1950s. Two photos of the same object are taken on a glass plate from a slightly different angle. It was during the American Civil War that the first photos of battlefields and fighting appeared but it was during WW1 that such reporting developed.

The car in this shot came round the corner and hit straight into the island in the middle of the road, it made it all the funnier when he/she reversed to try and get round the island and only ended up crashing into it again! I managed to capture a shot just after the crash.

Surprisingly, drugs were not involved in this late night hair cut and subsequent photo.

I have never gotten stuck on this road (only 7km of it anyway) - but once I was in the township town of Botshabelo (went shopping at the warehouses) and took the back dirt road out as people told me to do because it is safer - I asked if the road was dry enough and was told it was. When I reached the place where the dirt road goes up to join the highway, it was flooded - and even on grass I got bogged. The highway patrol police car stopped to help me (Thaba Nchu policemen) - and they couldn't help me - then the second patrol car stopped - then the third.... Eventually they called highway rescue and I was completely embarrassed by it (in my 1979 VW Golf)!

NUS Political Society Freshman Orientation Camp 95. Bottom left: me.

I've always thought of myself as looking young for my age (who doesn't?). People often mistake me for being younger than I am. So much so that I started to get cocky. "I should totally try the guess-your-age game at the fair", I'd say. "I bet I'd clean up at that!"

So this year at the Ex, I finally tried it.

Sure enough, I won. Not only did the guy miss my age by a whole 5 years, his guess was in a different decade from my actual age! Great success! Except...

He guessed over, not under.

So I was mistaken for an old(er) man and described as looking "beat up" in front of a large group of bemused onlookers. But on the upside, I got this cheap, off-model Brian doll to forever remind me of my humiliation.

I always feel bad for the catcher who just has to stand there while the other team congratulates themselves on a multi-run homer.
