May 10, 2019 - LaSalle Street Bridge and the Reid Murdoch Building located at 325 N LaSalle beyond.
"325 N LaSalle, constructed in 1914, was designed by George C. Nimmons for Reid, Murdoch & Co. one of the country’s largest wholesale grocers. Reid, Murdoch & Co. used the building for corporate offices and warehouse space, with several floors dedicated to manufacturing and processing various foods: cheeses, coffee, catsup, sugar, fish, bread, and pickles. The building even included a humidor where tobacco was rolled for cigars. The riverfront site enabled Reid, Murdoch & Co. to ship and receive goods via a supply chain that connected steamers on the building’s south side to railroad spurs on the north side. Under LaSalle Street, the building’s shipping platform was used to load trucks that delivered to merchants all over the city. The building even connected with the city’s downtown freight tunnel system, 60 feet below street level.
A notable example of the “Chicago School” of Architecture, the building’s design features a red brick façade with decorative terra-cotta embellishments covering a steel and concrete skeleton. Originally the building was symmetrical, with 6 bays of windows flanking the center tower on both sides. In 1926, one bay on the west end was removed allowing the City to widen LaSalle Street.
The City acquired the building in the 1950's where it housed the traffic court, the States Attorney’s office and other municipal offices until 1998, when Friedman Properties acquired it. Friedman painstakingly rehabbed the building, restoring and preserving historic elements, and while modernizing it with new entrances, elevators, and upgrades to the electrical, mechanical, plumbing and communication systems.
The building seven’s floors of office space with retail tenants on the first floor, capped by the building’s distinctive, four-sided clock tower. The two level river walk provides a convenient scenic walkway for public use, a patio where River Roast patrons can enjoy a unique outdoor dining experience, and a point of departure for the Chicago water taxi.

Location: Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami
Esquire, together with partners Double Cross Vodka, Herradura Tequila, and Camacho Cigars hosted the launch party for The Lounge at Gotham Steak, Chef Alfred Portale’s newly re-designed restaurant in the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. As guests sipped on specialty cocktails from Double Cross Vodka and Herradura Tequila, they joined Chef Portale in celebrating the arrival of newly-appointed Chef de Cuisine Todd Miller. Chef Miller created a variety of delicious hors d’oeuvres from a newly designed menu for the 175 guests to enjoy and savor.
Additionally, Camacho cigars created an outdoor Cigar Lounge where guests could enjoy a cigar that overlooked the Fontainebleau’s legendary pool deck. At the conclusion of the event, guests were treated to a gift bag that included an Esquire issue, a copy of Esquire’s new cookbook, ‘Eat Like a Man’, and complimentary cigars and a cutter from Camacho cigars.

This cabinet was my final second year university project. It has elements of both the wunderkammer and memento moris. I reconditioned the cabinet, originally a cigar humidor by fitting shelves and acid etching brass fittings and plaques. The bottles are genuine antiques filled with a variety of liquids, newspaper clippings, tablets, human teeth and many, many other things that represent the things people leave behind after they die. The books are a doctors manual and a genuine third edition of 'On the Origin of the Species' by Charles Darwin. The candles were also hand made and scented with a careful selection of aromatherapy oils to create a smell reminiscent of an apothecary shop. The drawer contains small medical curios, syringes and tubs and so on. Deficit Omne Quod Nasciture translates roughly to 'everything that is born will die.'
This project cost me a bloody fortune :)

I must admit that I was turned away by Macanudo for awhile. It was disheartening that I'd find so many of the cigars at your local gas station, grocery store, bar, restaurants, etc. I was getting overwhelmed with the site of them, as well as not enjoying the oversaturation of the brand. Most of the times when I did try and partake in a Macanudo cigar, I was reminded that rarely any shops outside of a well kept tobacco/humidor shop, can keep a good cigar. Then on my search for a really good natural cigar, I decided to try and get back on the Macanudo bandwagon. Normally before I smoke a cigar, I like to read the reviews to see how close or how far I feel to most of the reviews. Strangely, for Macanudo being one of the most popular brands in the country, there really aren't a lot of reviews being written up about it. I'm wondering if many cigar aficionados feel the same way as me, oversaturated of the brand. Anyway, from the reviews I did see, they were mostly short and positive.
The Macanudo Café Crystal was a good looking cigar, and you can't help but be inquisitive on why it is the nation's best selling and most popular cigar brand. The Crystal has a Connecticut Shade wrapper with a Dominican Mexican filler and a Mexican San Andrean binder. It's completely crafted in the Dominican Republic.
Lighting & First Taste:
After taking it out of the tube, the cigar did seem quite fresh. It wasn't tight at all, and had a sort of sponginess to it. I tend to like this type of texture, as I feel it gives off a great smoke, and can be cut well. Again bringing out my trusty $2 cutter, I had a clean cut and it lit quite well. Macanudo's always tend to taste sweet to me, and this one did as well. There was absolutely no harshness on the first few draws, and I'd go as far as to say it was quite a mild start to this cigar.
Smoking the Cigar:
The one thing that Macanudo is really known for is consistency. This cigar began mild and was constant throughout the body. Although it is considered a mild cigar, and I would agree by this one, there was a good strong taste, and a good amount of smoke that came from this cigar. The cigar never tightened up, and actually moistened up through the finish of the cigar. I never had to strain to take a draw and this, in my opinion, always brings out the best taste of the tobacco.
The Finish:
There was good ash throughout the cigar, and the finish had a good oak-wood type taste, but again was consistent with being a mild cigar. The smoke was good through the cigar, and even the finish of the cigar had no harshness. The sweetness did fade away somewhere within the middle of the cigar.
Band & Packaging:
The packaging, a glass tube, is great for traveling or if you know you are going to smoke the cigar soon. I'm always afraid of cracking them because I usually throw them in my bag when I know I'm going to have time for one later. The band came off well and did not stick to the leaf of the cigar.
