According to traditional Japanese beliefs, all humans have a spirit or soul called a 霊魂 (reikon). When a person dies, the reikon leaves the body and enters a form of purgatory, where it waits for the proper funeral and post-funeral rites to be performed, so that it may join its ancestors. If this is done correctly, the reikon is believed to be a protector of the living family and to return yearly in August during the Obon Festival to receive thanks.
However, if the person dies in a sudden or violent manner such as murder or suicide, if the proper rites have not been performed, or if they are influenced by powerful emotions such as a desire for revenge, love, jealousy, hatred or sorrow, the reikon is thought to transform into a yūrei, which can then bridge the gap back to the physical world.
The yūrei then exists on Earth until it can be laid to rest, either by performing the missing rituals, or resolving the emotional conflict that still ties it to the physical plane. If the rituals are not completed or the conflict left unresolved, the yūrei will persist in its haunting.

Nearly 100 teams took part in the 2019 Human Exploration Rover Challenge, held April 12-13 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The competition, hosted by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, challenges high school and college teams to design, build and test human-powered roving vehicles inspired by the Apollo lunar missions and future exploration missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. This year’s competition marked 25 years since the inaugural event.

On Thursday, June 26, the diocesan office of pastoral services hosted a two-session Symposium on Human Life and Dignity at Cathedral Square Center in Grand Rapids. This second annual event focused on two important issues: The morning session with Dr. William Passinault, Rebecca Mastee of the Michigan Catholic Conference and Sister Darlene Wessling, FSE of Great Lakes Caring (Hospice) talked about medical and theological considerations for end of life. The afternoon session with Father Bob Malloy, OFM Cap. addressed our pastoral response to people with mental illness.
Dan Boylan "Recent Works" was in the Lied Art Gallery during 2002. Boylan was born in Omaha, NE in 1940. He studied at the University of Nebraska at Omaha before moving to California in 1961. He returned to Omaha in 1984 to paint full time and exhibit his work throughout the midwest.
His exploration of painting takes him through the many worlds of nature: the midwestern landscape, the city scene and ultimately to the subject of the human figure.
