The Flood

This painting offers a dark and chaotic vision of the last remnants of humanity struggling against the rising waters of the flood described in the Book of Genesis. According to the biblical account, God perceived the wickedness of humankind and decided to expunge the human race from the earth in a great deluge of rain that lasted forty days and nights. Only Noah and his family in the Ark, with a pair of every animal on earth, survived the flood. Dutch artists working in the 1580s and 1590s, particularly in the city of Haarlem, favored the subject of the flood not only for its religious and dramatic content but also for the opportunity it offered them to portray figures in a variety of mannered poses. The artist of this work clearly belonged to this artistic circle, since he filled his painting with long, athletic figures in strenuous, sometimes exaggerated, positions seen from a number of angles.
Subject Matter:
This painting offers a dark and chaotic vision of the last remnants of humanity struggling against the rising waters of the flood described in the book of Genesis. The writhing mass of bodies offered van Mander the opportunity to display his skill in rendering human form, but also creates a sense of panicked desperation as humanity and civilization, suggested by the city in the background, is swallowed by the waters.
Physical Description:
In an ominous landscape a crowd of nude men, women and children, their bodies silhouetted against the descending gloom, struggle frantically to escape rising floodwaters. The figures gesture wildly and strenuously twist their long athletic bodies into a seemingly infinite variety of contortions as they clamber up the last hilltops and trees. A city stands on a hill and appears through the trees in the background.

RICHARD AND ROSANN NOEL GALLERY
From the medieval period through the exuberance of the Baroque, the splendors of European art are on display in this first floor gallery in Alumni Memorial Hall. Several pieces, such as the Madonna and Child with St. Thomas Aquinas and a Bishop Saint, by an unknown Umbrian artist around 1475, have long held an important place in UMMA’s teaching mission—and in the affection of visitors. The massively scaled Esther before Ahasuerus is shown with rare preparatory drawings for the painting, offering a glimpse into the creative process of Italian artist Guercino. Elsewhere in the gallery, rarely seen works of decorative art and long-term loans invite visitors to new discoveries.

The U-M Museum of Art (UMMA) is one of the oldest and largest university art museums in the country. Built as a war memorial in 1909 for the university’s Civil War fallen, the building originally housed U-M’s alumni office along with the University’s growing art collection. UMMA’s collections represent more than 150 years of collecting at the university, with more than 21,000 works of art that span cultures, eras, and media. The Museum hosts nearly 20 special exhibitions per year, and displays works from their permanent collection that features world renowned artists like James McNeill Whistler, Helen Frankenthaler, Pablo Picasso, Joshua Reynolds, Claude Monet, and Andy Warhol, among many others.
In addition to visual art, UMMA hosts a variety of performing arts events. The Helmut Stern Auditorium, located on the lower level of the Museum, is a state-of-the-art, acoustically superb space that seats 185, which hosts lectures, film screenings, readings, and performing arts events. The Auditorium is home to the Zell Visiting Writers Series readings and the Mark Webster Reading series—ongoing events that are free and open to the public.
UMMA hosts a variety of programs and events for all ages. Admission is free and open to the public.
The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) is a meeting place for the arts, bridging visual art and contemporary culture, scholarship and accessibility, tradition and innovation. The museum's collections include nearly 19,000 objects that span cultures, eras, and media and include European, American, Middle Eastern, Asian, and African art, as well as changing exhibits. The Museum of Art re-opened in 2009 after a three-year renovation and expansion.
