Wurzel Jesse
Root of Jesse, 2008
Albertina - Sammlung Batliner
The painting Tree of Jesse demonstrates Kiefer's free and associative take on mythology and history. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah speaks of the Tree of Jesse that the twelve tribes of Israel spring from, which, as Kiefer sees it, make up the whole Jewish culture. Kiefer is fascinated with myths because they connect the heavenly and the earthly sphere and make it possible to interprete events and disasters inflicted on humankind as the work of gods. For him, myths are still potent: they keep the world under a spell and impact to us a sense of the lingering presence of ancient powers.
And yet, the work on the myth is not - and is never - completed. Jesus Christ's line of descent, the Tree of Jesse, reaches all the way up to the recent past of the Jewish holcaust against a scorched background the little shirts and dresses of exterminated children are floating in the air. The flowering family tree turns into a painful whithered thorn bush.
Anselm Kiefer
It is the exploration of German history and mythology that is in the center of the work of artist Anselm Kiefer, born 1945 in Germany. Before embarking on an art career, Kiefer studied law, literature, and linguistics. Ever since his beginnings, Kiefer has devoted himself to examining German postwar identity.
In so doing, he falls back on classical history painting in several respects. What Kiefer has in common with it is the monumental picture sizes, historical subject matter, working in series, and a generous, sweeping style of painting aimed for panoramic effect. However, while traditional historical painting celebrates victorious battles and triumphant generals, Kiefer keeps the memory of suffering and annihilation alive in paintings of scorched earth. His oeuvre deals with the horrifying events and experiences of the 20th century, giving them impressive articulation in images that preserve the memory as timeless documents.
The world that Kiefer's work speaks of is wounded, which finds expression in the scabby, rugged surfaces of his paintings. Whereas many artists respond to what happened in World War II by refusing identifiable pictorial content and representationalism and turning to abstraction as a spiritual retreat, Kiefer's achievement and significance consists in having restored the allegorical monumental painting to the world again.
The focus of Albertina Contemporary Art is on the art of the second half of the 20th century. Both the stars and the diversity of post-1945 art will be on display: works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig, among others, form the centerpiece of this year's presentation of contemporary positions from the ALBERTINA.
Around 80 masterpieces illustrate the multi-faceted artistic production, ranging from hyperrealism to abstraction, from facets of aesthetics of color to political topics, and illustrate the complex parallel currents of the past decades.

“Magic Water”: water and humankind. Let yourself be captivated by twelve water images
The Hansgrohe Calendar constantly presents fascination with water in new interpretations, with a focus on people – and on the magic that water bestows. Now in its tenth year of publication, this motto is also the title for the Hansgrohe Calendar 2013: “Magic Water”.
Hansgrohe was lucky enough to scoop American people photographer Liz Von Hoene and New York still life photographer and designer Craig Cutler for the artistic interpretation.

July 20, 1969. It was 40 years ago today that humankind set foot on another world!
This is a picture taken of the "Special Edition Life Magazine: To The Moon and Back" that I have been keeping safe. I came across the magazine after my Mom's folks passed away.
Though this image later became a cultural icon from MTV, I think it stands best as an icon of what humankind can do if we focus our energies and intelligence on positive goals!
Please note the text at the bottom of the image (view large). It wasn't a sound stage!

Whilst visiting a customer at Canary Wharf, I was stopped by a beautiful girl working for Oxfam (Scarlet Sam-Martin) - First I thought she was trying to sign me up for a monthly donation, but it turned out she was just after some support for a petition. I noticed that she was holding the device pictured above... Being a geek I was curious...
She was using this device to collect names and addresses of supporters of their "Be Humankind" program - This is a program where they are promoting alternative energy and awareness of peoples carbon footprint. I was pleased that they were using technology themselves to achieve this, after all one way to reduce the carbon food print is to stop using paper, right?
Very cool stuff - Wonder who provided the device and gave them the application?
