A few times a year, Human Connections organizes GETs (Global Engagement Trips) for student groups, tourists, and other visitors eager to gain a better understanding of the local culture in Bucerías, Nayarit, Mexico. This particular GET group, from Northern Illinois University, participated in a week long program centered around social entrepreneurship, NGO management, and sustainable development.

A tender moment between a grandmother and her grandchild — captured in a warm, sepia-toned embrace. Their smiles and closed eyes tell a story of unconditional love, safety, and timeless connection across generations. This portrait is a reminder that sometimes, the safest place in the world is in the arms of someone who has loved you long before you were born.

Human Connections hosts students from the US twice a year to participate in a 2 week to 2 month long internship program, during the winter and summer seasons, respectively.

Interns immerse themselves in the local culture through interactions with our artisans, with the Bucerías community, and with local homestay families. Interns also contribute much to the work and structure of Human Connections, integrating into the office culture as part of the HC team.

NIU students learn from our Huichol artisan, Leonarda. Leonarda is from a non-Spanish speaking, marginalized indigenous community in Mexico. Thanks to her skills as a talented artisan and her business-savvy, Leo has become a successful entrepreneur.

"Moving forward after a loss takes discipline. It takes focus. The world owes us nothing. You can choose to remain angry and be another statistic or you can funnel this pain to help someone else, prevent them from experiencing the loss you feel."

This dynamic street photograph encapsulates the vibrant energy of Paris, showcasing a diverse group of individuals navigating the bustling urban landscape. The composition draws the viewer's eye to the central figure, a woman in sunglasses and a stylish coat, who stands out amidst the crowd. The use of depth of field emphasizes her presence while the blurred figures around her suggest movement and life. The contrasting textures of clothing and the interplay of light and shadow add depth to the scene, inviting viewers to ponder the stories of each passerby. The cloudy sky overhead hints at the unpredictable Parisian weather, adding an atmospheric layer to the narrative.
