On March 26, 2024, experts from the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Memorial and human rights organization OVD-Info, and human rights activist Evgenia Kara-Murza, wife of the political prisoner Vladimir Kara-Murza, joined UN Special Rapporteur Mariana Katzarova at a Human Rights Council side event to describe the scope of political repression in Russia and the fate of political prisoners.

The event - “Political Persecution in Russia after Alexei Navalny's Death and the 2024 Presidential Election: Cycle of Repression and Impunity” was organized by the International Memorial Association and the Permanent Missions of the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and the United States and opened with remarks by Jan Marian, Deputy Minister of foreign affairs of the Czech Republic. Panelists also included Emanuelis Zingeris, Chairperson, Lithuanian National Delegation to PACE; Human Rights Lawyer Violetta Fitsner; Mariana Katzarova, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Russian Federation; Natalia Kolyagina, Memorial; Sergei Davidis, Memorial; and moderator Ole von Uexküll, Right Livelihood Award Foundation. U.S. Ambassador Michèle Taylor delivered closing remarks.

“Today gave me hope that even as Putin silences and imprisons so many, the remaining voices of brave Russians, and those that support them, will continue to document and describe the situation of human rights in Russia,” said Ambassador Michèle Taylor. “By courageously carrying out this difficult and often dangerous work, they pave the way for a future in Russia where repression ceases, human rights are respected, and ordinary Russians can live in the safety and freedom they richly deserve.”
