Sharon's nephews rigged up something so we could get the hockey game going despite my dad not actually having cable. Unfortunately someone had to hold this coaxial cable in place all night. We took turns.
And after all our hard work, those lousy bums had the gall to lose in shoot out!
Human Spaceflight: Returning to Earth
As difficult as the task of launching spacecraft into orbit or to the Moon is the daunting task of safely returning them and their precious human and scientific cargos to Earth. The basic problem is how to dissipate the enormous kenetic energy of a spacecraft moving as fast as 32,000 kilometers (20,000 miles) per hour. Friction with Earth’s atmosphere serves as a brake, a process that converts the energy of motion into heat. That searing heat must be efficiently removed from the spacecraft if the vehicle and its contents are to survive.
Ablative Heat Shield
A superhot bubble of glowing gases enveloped the Apollo command module as it reentered Earth’s atmosphere. The ablative heat shield covering the spacecraft charred and evaporated, carrying away excess heat.
Ceramic Shielding
The Space Shuttle is the first spacecraft with wings and wheels, enabling it to land like an airplane on a runway. The vehicle is covered with durable ceramic tiles and blankets that shield it from the heat of reentry.
Slowing for Final Descent
After reentry through the atmosphere, large parachutes slowed the Apollo command module to a safe speed before it plunged into the Pacific Ocean.
Dr. Karen Scott, chief medical officer for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health and Human Services, visits the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to review the first U.S. Department of Defense pathogen reduction technology. This new technology offers a significant improvement in blood safety. Pathogen reduced platelet products recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration reduce the risks from known, emerging and future transfusion-transmitted infections. This protection is especially important in today's increasingly global health care arena, where the blood supply faces threats from expanding epidemics of Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika and other emerging infectious agents. Moreover, pathogen-reduced platelets address another pressing blood safety concern and major cause of transfusion-related morbidity and mortality — bacterial contamination. PRT reduces risk from a wide spectrum of potentially-deadly bacteria in platelets. Similarly, since PRT is a method known to reduce infectious risks from viruses, including CMV, pathogen platelets are considered CMV-safe.

Nineteen news outlets, including NBC, ABC, and CBS local affiliates, as well as The Oakland Tribune (in a front-page spread) provided media coverage, which highlighted China’s continuing sponsorship of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Survivors and descendants of victims of 20th century genocides, Roxanne Makasdjian (Armenian genocide), Peter Li (Nanjing), Dr. Steven Sloan (The Holocaust), Alen Krajcin (Bosnia), Willis Shalita (Bosnia) and Samuel Garang Akau (Southern Sudan) led 100 participants in a torch walk. They handed a symbolic Olympic torch from one to the next and finally to Mohamed Suleiman, a Darfuri, who carried the torch to the stage.
The Honorable Barbara Lee (U.S. House of Rep., CA-9th District) delivered a rousing keynote speech urging the U.S. Government to take effective and prompt action to end the Darfur genocide. Danny Glover, acclaimed actor and human rights activist, highlighted the crisis in the Congo. Nikki Serapio (Director, Americans Against the Darfur Genocide (OurPledge.org) and SF Bay Area Darfur Coalition member) directed his remarks to China and to Sudan President Al-Bashir, highlighting Bashir’s latest obstruction of plans to deploy peacekeepers to Darfur. Rabbi Lee Bycel (Executive Director, Western Region, AJWS) led participants in a very moving die-in. And, Rabbi Henry Shreibman as the Master of Ceremonies inspired the crowd to ratchet up their activism.
Mohamed Suleiman spoke to China on behalf of the people of Darfur: "...my people ...have nothing but nightmare for the fifth consecutive year. They ask me questions I can not answer. ... Why is China giving money to Al-Bashir’s government for oil when China knows he is committing genocide against us? Why does China supply arms and military aircraft while it knows Al-Bashir will use them against us? For more than four years we held high hopes that the UN Security Council would protect us from the atrocities of Al-Bashir and his Janjaweed. Why does China always stand in the way of these resolutions and protect the killers in Khartoum? ... My people are really asking the big question: is there anyone who can make China stop killing us?"

A quick shot of the Fireblast Human Torch I got recently. The figure is quite the standard modern figure with spring action arms, I like the colours this throws off when the sun is setting. The colours of the orange and red really do shine quite brightly.

Please join NESRI, the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School, and other allies for the founding meeting of the Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ESCR) Working Group, within the larger Bringing Human Rights Home Lawyers' Network. Everyone engaged in domestic ESCR legal advocacy is welcome to attend, and you may participate in person or via phone. Lunch will be provided.
The ESCR Working Group hopes to create space for collaboration and convene strategic conversations about where ESCR opportunities lie. This first meeting will focus on current ESCR efforts in the United States, the movement for a human right to housing as a case study, and brainstorming. We will circulate reading materials to guide discussion prior to the meeting.

This afternoon, rock collecting for more inukshuks, near Cave Creek, Arizona. Like "Our Man in the Field", inspiration comes from many directions. Nice to have a man in the image to give a sense of scale, eh? Then there is the sense of the man weighing that rock, to see if it makes our "cut".
