Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
was a French poet, novelist, playwright, and politician, widely considered one of the greatest writers in world literature. Born in Besançon, he grew up during the turbulent Napoleonic era, which shaped his political and artistic vision. His most famous works include Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, novels that combine dramatic storytelling with deep social and moral themes.
Hugo was also a passionate advocate for social justice, opposing the death penalty, fighting for freedom of the press, and supporting the poor and oppressed. He spent nearly 20 years in political exile after Napoleon III’s coup, during which he wrote some of his most powerful works. Beyond literature, Hugo was an accomplished artist, producing over 4,000 drawings, and he had a fascination with the sea, Gothic architecture, and the mysteries of the human soul.
When he died in 1885, over two million people joined his funeral procession in Paris, a testament to his lasting influence on French culture and the world.

Victor Hugo (1802.–1885.) bio je francuski pjesnik, romanopisac, dramatičar i političar, široko smatran jednim od najvećih pisaca svjetske književnosti. Rođen u Besançonu, odrastao je u burnom Napoleonovom razdoblju, što je oblikovalo njegov politički i umjetnički pogled na svijet. Njegova najpoznatija djela su Jadnici i Zvonar crkve Notre-Dame, romani koji spajaju dramatično pripovijedanje s dubokim društvenim i moralnim temama.
Hugo je bio i strastveni borac za društvenu pravdu — protivio se smrtnoj kazni, borio se za slobodu tiska i podržavao siromašne i potlačene. Nakon Napoleonovog III. državnog udara proveo je gotovo 20 godina u političkom egzilu, tijekom kojeg je napisao neka od svojih najpoznatijih djela. Osim u književnosti, bio je i vrsni umjetnik, stvorivši više od 4.000 crteža, a posebno ga je privlačilo more, gotička arhitektura i misteriji ljudske duše.
Kad je umro 1885. godine, više od dva milijuna ljudi sudjelovalo je u njegovoj pogrebnoj povorci u Parizu, što je svjedočilo o njegovom trajnom utjecaju na francusku kulturu i svijet.

Né à Besançon, il grandit pendant la période turbulente napoléonienne, qui façonna sa vision politique et artistique. Ses œuvres les plus célèbres sont Les Misérables et Notre-Dame de Paris, des romans qui allient narration dramatique et profondes réflexions sociales et morales.
Hugo fut aussi un ardent défenseur de la justice sociale — il s’opposa à la peine de mort, se battit pour la liberté de la presse et soutint les pauvres et les opprimés. O deputado federal e candidato à reeleição pelo PSC, Hugo Leal participou na noite desta quinta-feira (5) de uma reunião com a comunidade do município de Areal, no Areal Shopping. Na ocasião, ele apresentou suas atuações, como parlamentar e representante do nosso Estado. Em 2006, ele foi o deputado federal que recebeu mais votos no município. No encontro, o prefeito Laerte Calil, destacou os trabalhos do deputado na Câmara e o que ele tem realizado pela cidade.
