It's been a fairly chilly Friday, the bright sunlight notwithstanding. I was glad to see a few clusters of the liverwort blooming despite the roller-coaster weather conditions of the past several days.

I don't think this place is still going, as it seemed pretty deserted. That's a shame because their sign is a beaut! Stainless steel arrow (with chasing lamps), gold channel letters, neon and a nifty little lantern on the top. What's not to like? I hope that if the place is to be no more, someone will at least save the sign.

(later) I just talked to someone at the Allen County Historical Society (next door to here) about researching the Artkraft neon company, and inquired why this place closed. Seems the area around here is becoming sorta "druggie" and rough, so they tossed in the towel. She (the person there) said it was a shame, since their food was very good. The building is still for sale, if anyone out there is willing to give it a go.

Okay, this is me being artsy. The emu in this photo is neither cold nor neglected nor sad. She's just preening, and she doesn't care that she's sitting in a puddle. But, I thought it made a moody image.

Hoodoos seem to have huddled as closely as possible in this small canyon--were they trying to escape the wind, or hide from the sun?

Hoodoos form when a hard sedimentary layer and an underlying softer layer (e.g. ash) become exposed, and the upper layer begins to break up. Hard fragments protect the softer layer immediately underneath as erosion removes uncove portions of the soft layer.

Brendan Rodgers' Celtic earned the 'Invincibles' tag by beating Hearts, but who else has achieved the rare title?

The Scottish Premiership champions secured their league triumph back at the start of April but the pressure was still on for their season finale on Sunday, as they looked to finish the campaign undefeated.

They did just that, with goals from Leigh Griffiths and Stuart Armstrong sealing a 2-0 win and taking their league record for the 2016/17 campaign to P38 W34 D4 L0

"Winter Squirrel Huddle" by Patti Deters. This Grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) has found a protected spot in the crook of a tree branch to shelter from the snow and wind. She has her tail wrapped around her back and over her head as if for extra protection against the cold Minnesota winter. She looks a bit scared and forlorn as she huddles alone in isolation. These little rodent mammals have double-jointed ankles that allow their feet to face both forwards and backwards which is why they are such great tree climbers. By tucking herself into a circular ball against the tree trunk, she has made a sort of natural minimalist piece of artwork. Coots are rather small water birds that are members of the rail family, Rallidae. They constitute the genus Fulica, the name being the Latin term for "coot". Coots have predominantly black plumage, and—unlike many rails—they are usually easy to see, often swimming in open water. They are close relatives of the moorhen.
