Supporters of the PPP at a popular rally in Nasirabad, in the suburbs of Rawalpindi on Jan.4, 2008. At some point, people (incl. children) were praying for Benazir Bhutto, a scene that I've seen repeatedly at every gathering. As in many other aspects of life in Pakistan, it seems that politics and religion are closely intricated.

I hope your not tired of firework shots just yet....some of the best are yet to come.

Explored Jan 2, 2012

San Francisco rang in the New Year with one of the best firework shows I have seen much less filmed. Several Pink Butterfly fireworks erupt over the skyscrapers that make up San Francisco's unique skyline. The fireworks reflect in the shimmering waters of San Francisco Bay as seen from atop Yerba Buena Island.

To the far right, you can see the Transamerica building with its stunning ornament that strobes and twinkles brightly in the distance. The famous Embarcadero Center are the towers outlined with lights and just below it and to the left you can make out the red lights atop the Port of San Francisco's restored clock tower.

Just prior to the bridge you can see the fairly new tower known as One Ricon Hill and of course the famous suspension section of the beautifully lit Bay Bridge. The far south, the hills of South San Francisco are adorn with lights from the many antenna towers. It all makes for one incredible New Years Eve vision of the City by the Bay.

Another of Christian. This took way, way too long to finish, mostly because I spent aaaaaaages cutting out 20 different versions of the guitar to end up only using 5 :|

Had this song on loop pretty much the entire time I was making the photo. It somewhat influenced the final product :)

ALL MY PHOTOS ARE NOW ON SALE!

I've been hanging out with folks in the Polaroid scene, past six months or so. Some of 'em have YouTube pages, or podcasts, followings. They've been at it for five years, or seven years, some folks are new to it, some folks are older, some are younger.

I'll be talking to them, worker among workers, that's how I like to describe it, how I try to think about myself when I'm hanging out with other artists.

Then I'll pull this image out of the archives to talk about here and realize it was fifteen fucking years ago...and at that point I'd already been taking photos seriously for five years? That I've been at this a long goddamn time! And I'm not tired of it!

Lot's changed, so much. At the time of this photo, I was living in a tiny apartment (albeit in a great neighborhood, with some fun neighbors), I was driving an old old car that had over 300,000 miles on it, I probably had a month's worth of rent in the bank, if that.

But I'd met so many people online, I had friends coming out my ears.

I didn't have all I wanted, but I had what I needed. I was very lucky. Maybe that's one of the biggest lessons of my twenty year journey: Make as many friends as possible. Meet people as much as you're able. Put yourself out there, no matter how shy you feel you are.

Everyone involved in this photo was someone I met because I was crazy online. Messaging people, texting people, IMing people, talking to people, commenting on other people's photos, talking to people, that was really my main hobby. Photography was a side benefit to all the people I've gotten to hang out with.

This photo, much as I like it (why did I wait 15 years to post it????), this is nothing compared to the great time we had, that day. The good times are waiting for us all...

When I go on holiday, as well as getting some nice shots to set the scene, but I also like to get some shots of the local people. Come to think of it, even in London I still try and get the odd portraiture shot. I think I prefer the travel photography though, at least that way I get to fly around the world.

I was walking through a square in Marrakech, just outside the main souks. I saw this man in the shadows in the corner and I loved how the latticework shadows were falling across him. I got on the telephoto lens and snapped a few shots from the other side of the square. He's looking directly at me in this shot, but I'm not too sure if he knew I was actually taking his photo, as I was quite far away.

This really needs to be seen large, as the shadows look a bit confusing otherwise. Try it and see for yourself!

#357 in interestingness (on 2008-09-09)

Basic exposure: f/16, 0.013 sec (1/80), ISO 100, 12 mm

Location: Borgercompagnie-Noord, Hoogezand-Sappemeer (Gr.), The Netherlands.

Processing info for newbies: Manual blending - layer masks - from several variations of a single exposure.

The following basic steps are taken into account when working towards an end-result - from camera import to posting a low-res version. Depending on some in-camera settings here are the steps some have been asking for:

1. convert to sRGB mode

there's no need for Adobe RGB.

2. Lens correction

you and I may not need it, but sometimes I like to straighten things up.

3. crop

14:9 ratio being my personal preferable format. Yours may differ.

4. modest pre-sharpening

don't exaggerate clearly visible noise, otherwise reverse steps 4 - 5 and forgo step 8.

5. noise reduction

artistic choice, not a necessity. Sometimes I like to add film grain instead.

6. toning

changing white-balance, selective coloring or color contrast enhancements.

7. Burn & Dodge

emphasize shadows and lights to your needs. I forgo the standard tools and use B/W brushes on a 50% gray filled layer in Overlay mode instead.

8. after-sharpening

don't overdo. Take care of 100% white halos around edges, especially with the High-Pass filter. Too enthusiastic usage will result in spit-ugly optic grayish areas throughout your image.

9. contrast curve

mostly linear to medium in Luminosity layer mode, just because I like curves.

10. editable hi-res storage

personally I like to store 16-bit Photoshop files for all sorts of printing purposes when needed. Someone may ask for a customized version tomorrow..

Depending on your working mode, convert to 8-bit, resize and shave down to your preferable low-res format - to prevent shameless thieves from getting away with your hi-res work. One final slight sharpening for the extra awe from Flickr friends.

Between steps 6 - 8 - actually it could be anywhere - sometimes other effects happen to occur to spice up my end-result.

This all seems an awful lot of work to some - from whom I got questions almost daily - but basically it isn't when certain steps obviously become routine. Also note that I like to process everything that's coming from a lousy camera-sensor anyway, full-frame or not. That said you may conclude that I'm not a photography purist and I don't pretend to be. Instead I'm simply an image maker and it's not even my sole intent to reproduce reality in any way. I do this stuff both personally and professionally for many years and I still love to experiment and learn as much as I can.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Clean Stream Comment Policy: I like to read personal words instead of Automatic lines, which were lamely picked from a dropdown-box without any other effort to be taken. The latter won't be valued and will be removed. If my work just doesn't bother you, no hard feelings, just move on.

If you like my work, faving or leaving a personal note is all it takes, really.

Also having trouble digging through all these pesty group awards to extract those scarce clean comments someone personally wrote? The Flickr No Award Greasemonkey script hides them all and works like a charm. Warning: when installed, changes are you're staring at an empty stream :)

72/365 - In The Colors - Ben Harper

Tough start of a new week. Bad results in several stupid tests at school lately and a lot of work to finish before intense days of practice tests next week. You see what I'm talking about ?

So after courses me and Loic had to made a new shot for the school project we've been working on all the weekend. The theme is "Do it as..." a (famous or not so) photographer.

The original feelings we had with this work were very great, we found we had to understand the style of a photographer and shot new pictures with this particular style. We also have to redact about this photographer, define his style and explain his pictures.

In fact, that's basically less interesting, we have to purely copy two pictures of a photographer like a xerox and describe "technically" the original pictures.

Whatever, it's been several weeks that I wanted to make a tribute to Dustin Diaz with this theme, cause he has been inspiring for me. But in the end, I was really unmotivated to just copy his work.

Don't think that's the better way to learn something...

I've been working on learning how Dustin does his pictures for few months to inspire my own ones and be able to shoot something decent for this theme.

Finally I decided to change and try some new things, I wanted to make fashion pictures outdoor with the spring feeling, I found great fashion pictures by Ted Grambeau, but that was not really what I wanted to do. I've shot some pics as Ted Grambeau this Sunday with Emmeline, but finally we ended with the Dustin like picture in the subway that I really liked.

With no fashion photographer name found, I decided to get back on my first idea, that's why we had to shot another one this Monday with Loic.

First we went to a lake outside Toulouse with Melissa and Florent where Loic wanted to shoot his theme picture. Found the place interesting and decided to go for a fashion shoot with Melissa for today's shot. After that, we went back to my place to pack the rest of the things we needed for my DD shot and we went to the center to find the right spot.

A lot of hard work. Hope you'll enjoy it cause we don't have that much sleep theese days...

Love to read your comments. Take care, see ya tomorrow.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

The pressure to come up with something every single day (without any breaks!) is intense... Sometimes it's enough to make your head explode! I'm trying to challenge myself every day (though admittedly a few times I've uploaded something crap because I'm having an off day).

Sometimes when the pressure gets too much I tell myself, "This is just a 365 - my photography can keep going once the 365 days are up. This 365 isn't the only photography I'm ever going to do, so it doesn't have to be 100% perfect; I'm still learning."

But then I wonder if that's just giving myself permission to be complacent and slack off...

Joe Cocker - With a little help from my friends

Behind the two-dimensional images of our photos often lie entire stories from our lives…

And this snapshot once again confirms that rule.

On one hand, I took this photo during a recent trip to the countryside with friends. Over the past couple of years, due to the widespread chaos on the streets caused by so-called “state services” (doesn’t the word “serve” imply protecting and helping citizens for the state?..), we haven’t gathered for outdoor getaways as often. To be precise, I’d never joined my friends’ celebrations before, fearing encounters with “people hunters”… Or rather, my wife always worries about my safety, and anything beyond 10–20 kilometers from the city remains off-limits…

But this time, everything aligned perfectly for me! A friend rented a house practically within the city limits to celebrate his birthday. With our birthdays less than a month apart, I immediately suggested a joint celebration when I heard about the location.

Everything worked out so well that my wife had no arguments left against the idea. And in the end, it turned into a warm, heartfelt gathering, filling everyone’s inner world with new memories and my gallery with fresh photos…

As for the photo itself, it captures part of a morning ritual we reenact almost every day at the office. We have a full manual coffee-brewing kit there. We brought it along on the trip, and that morning, we enjoyed what might have been the best coffee in the past year. But above all, we filled the “cups” of our memories with fresh, vivid moments — just like the coffee cup in the picture.

...next time I'll try to make a story about my relationships with coffee...
