Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954
Most monster movie fans have believed for decades that the design of the Creature was the work of Bud Westmoore, but that is not the case. The Creature's "gill-man" design actually came off of the pen of artist Milicent (Millicent) Patrick. Although the fetching young illustrator never got her name in the films credits she was paraded from film screening to film screening in hopes that her model-like good looks would drum up more publicity for the film. Her contribution to the history of monster films has never been fully given the credit that it so deserves. Unfortunately there a far too many such "unknown heroes" in the genre of horror and sci-fi films.
The Creature's appearance was based on old
seventeenth-century woodcuts of two bizarre
creatures called the Sea Monk and the Sea
Bishop. The Creature's final head was based on
that of the Sea Monk, but the original discarded
head was based on that of the Sea Bishop.
Here we have several shots of Milicent Patrick. Patrick was the person responsible for the look and design of the "Creature From the Black Lagoon".
Universal was already famous for iconic "monster" movies. Frankenstein and Dracula became part of the culture. Creature from the Black Lagoon (CBL) is mostly in the same vein of monster-horror flick, but with a little science in its fiction. Unlike magical or demonic monsters, this one is supposedly a "natural" anomaly of evolution. CBL is often classified as sci-fi, so it's worthy of inclusion here.
Budget-wise, CBL is a B movie, but it's a cut above the usual B crowd. The acting was reasonable. The cinematography was impressive. The only "special" effect was the creature's costume. While the Creature is, in many people's mind, THE icon for man-in-rubber-suit monster costumes, something about the creature found resonance in movie-goers. He was strong enough to merit two sequels.
The producers tapped Jack Arnold for director. Arnold, who directed It Came From Outer Space had an excellent eye. His use of many camera locations, angles, framing and cuts, he lets the camera become invisible. Viewers are in the scene, not simply watching it.
The actors didn't get in the way of the story. Richard Carlson was already a big name in the sci-fi movie world. It Came From Outer Space, Magnetic Monster, and Riders to the Stars. Richard
Denning was a hunky star of many westerns and detective movies. He would go on to star in a few more sci-fi films. The female lead, Julie Adams was perfect as the beautiful damsel. The supporting cast were a little quirky at times, but not as stiff and wooden as second-teir actors tend to be.
Synopsis
A old archeologist, working in the remote Amazon, finds the fossilized hand -- somewhat humanoid, but obviously aquatic. He shows it to some other scientists who agree to mount an expedition to find the rest of the skeleton. While Dr. Maia was doing all this, a creature with the same kind of hand tears up his camp and kills his two native helpers. The scientists spend many days digging and sifting, but come up empty. They decide to go further upstream to the Black Lagoon to search. There, they encounter the Gill-Man. The two scientists are at odds over what's best -- capture the creature alive, kill it and bring it back, study it and leave, etc. All this debate becomes moot when the creature begins killing off crew members. The creature barricades the entrance to the lagoon so the ship cannot leave. The expedition becomes a battle for survival. They manage to drug and capture the creature, but it escapes its cage-tank. It kills Dr. Williams. It then captures the beautiful woman, taking her to his cave lair. The men follow, find her and the creature. After taking several bullet hits, the creature staggers away and dives into the lagoon. The final image is of the creature floating downwards, limp and lifeless.
Why is this movie fun?
This is one of those cultural icon movies that even non-fans of sci-fi know. In that regard, watching it like seeing a celebrity in person. Arnold does a good job with pacing and keeping tension up. It's interesting that the creature gets his own theme music, of sorts. Arnold that the same ascending three note phrase, "do da DEEEEE!" accompany each appearance. The creature's mixture of vulnerability and apparent invincibility, kept you off guard. Spear gun hits or bullets seemed to almost take him down, but not quite.
Dueling Scientists -- Dr. Reed (Carlson) represents the "good" side of science. He wants to study the creature, but not interfere or harm anything. He wants to expand the field of knowledge for altruistic reasons. Dr. Williams (Denning) represents the dark side of science. He's focused on the fundraising potential, the economic cost of expeditions. When confronted with the creature, he's all for killing it (not so much for the safety of the others) in order to bring it back for exhibition. This dualism of scientists is somewhat two-dimensional, but works as a sub-theme.
Many B-grade sci-fi films show their low-budget monster as little as possible. CBL breaks that rule in a big way. Viewers get several partial views right away (the hand) and not too far into the film, a full view of him. Since the producers didn't cheap out on the gill-man's costume, viewers aren't let down. He looks, moves and acts much one would think a gill-man would.
The gill-man is not simply a killing machine type of monster. His curiosity with (attraction to) Kay makes him more complex. In the swimming sequence (a strong foreshadow of the swimming girl scene in Jaws), he swims along with her, unseen, in a sort of parallel dance. He, the ancient, strong and primal male matching moves with the lithe, beautiful, innocent female. Some suggest that the gill-man's popularity was how well he echoed the adolescent male condition: awkward, unattractive, misunderstood, full of rage, attracted to beautiful women, but insecure approaching them. The big scene, in which the gill-man grabs Kay off the boat and swims her down to his cave lair is easily a young male fantasy.
CBL has the classic they're-after-our-women scene. It lives up to the poster art. The gill-man grabs the woman and runs (swims) off with her. He carries her in his arms toward his lair. Unlike other versions of this classic image, the gill-man appears to actually want the woman.

Bagattelle d’Inverno, l’ultima grande sfida #snellobb04
Birichinate, cammuffamenti, trasvestimenti, scherzi… insomma, in una parola: Carnevale!
Comunque lo si dica e comunque lo si festeggi, il Carnevale è da secoli una festa in cui la parola d’ordine è “divertirsi”.
Quindi, bando all’austerità e bando alle restrizioni, potevamo, noi di MondoSnello, non cogliere quest’occasione perfetta di Gusto e di Benessere, per vivere l’ultimo grande appuntamento delle gare di cucina di Snello Blind Box?
Eccoci qui, allora, amici di Mondosnello, estimatori dei prodotti Snello Rovagnati e appassionati Food Blogger che partecipate con noi ormai da un tempo che comincia a farsi lungo, perfino “tradizionale” (proprio come ci piace ;-)) a darvi il benvenuto a questa quarta sfida tra pentole, fornelli e… qualcosa di speciale – sennò che Carnevale è!
I fantasiosi piatti saranno assaggiati e votati da una giuria di esperti gastronomi di altissimo livello, a cominciare da Gil Grigliatti, gourmet di cultura ed esperienza internazionale. Da giovane è stato fiduciario Slow Food, nonché ispettore della guida dei ristoranti del Gambero Rosso per diversi anni. Autore del blog bilingue di cultura enogastronomica isymposium.org. Ancora Paolo Barichella, esperto di Food Design, autore del blog barichella.it; Alessia Cipolla, architetto e sommelier, autrice de lacostruzionedelgusto.it; Alessandro Salamone, reduce dalla trasmissione di La7 Chef per un giorno, autore di spaghettibites.com e ancora Angela Tomaiuolo co-fondatrice del web magazine milanodabere.it. Inoltre sarà presente Giacomo Kratter, otto volte campione italiano ed ora allenatore della Nazionale Italiana Snowboard. Quella da snowboard però non è l’unica tavola che ama: infatti Giacomo è un grande appassionato di cucina e adora farsi coccolare in ristoranti di lusso.
La giuria per l’occasione sarà presenziata dallo chef stellato e pluripremiato Davide Scabin, uno dei più apprezzati in Italia e all’estero, noto al grande pubblico per la partecipazione, nei panni di giudice dei cuochi in gara, a La Prova del Cuoco condotto su Rai1 da Antonella Clerici.
Per questo, abbiamo deciso di mettere insieme una serie di ingredienti saporiti, variegati, originali, proprio come in ogni ricetta gourmet che si rispetti:
- un pizzico di tradizione – la sede di InKitchen Loft, che ormai è prontissima ad accoglierci, in qualunque veste ci presentiamo
- e uno di modernità – quello che emana netto dalle protagoniste della gara, giovani donne che si muovono agili tra vite professionali sfidanti e articolati ménage familiari
- una buona dose di fantasia - fatta di maschere, costumi e colori sgargianti
- e l’ingrediente segreto – le nostre amate BlindBox, chiuse fino all’ultimo secondo anche al più ardito degli sguardi
- il tutto cosparso con una spruzzata di giocosità bambina – grazie a un buon numero di piccoli “scavezzacollo” che avranno il loro tavolo, i loro ingredienti, i loro cibi, e soprattutto una chef d’eccezione - Stefania Corrado, la “Multitasking Chef” che più che presentazioni merita i nostri più sentiti complimenti ;-) – a guidarli alla scoperta del buon cibo, del gusto e del mangiare bene… sapendolo preparare.
Già, perché, in fondo, soprattutto in un’era estremamente tecnologica come la nostra e come quella di quell’immediato futuro in cui saranno loro i protagonisti del mondo – far mettere “le mani in pasta” ai nostri bimbi lo consideriamo un onore, oltre che un piccolo grande contributo all’educazione dei “buoni mangiatori” di domani…
Amanti della cucina, appassionate del gusto, attente all’armonia dei sapori e alla cura per la buona e la bella tavola
Estimatrici di ricette snelle - per velocità, capacità, leggerezza - esperte nella valorizzazione degli ingredienti di stagione e nella rivisitazione moderna di piatti tradizionali, si sfideranno, si concentreranno su pentole e fornelli dimenticando tutto il resto, per dare il meglio di sé.

March commemorates Korean War

CAMP HUMPHREYS — Republic of Korea Army officers joined Korean Augmentation to the United States Army Soldiers (KATUSAs) for a rucksack march in commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War here on June 25.
“What we did today is nothing compared to what our predecessors had to go through during the Korean War,” said Cpl. Oh, Hyeon-myeong of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, United States Army Garrison Humphreys. “What they did during the Korean War changed history and the way we live today. This rucksack march allowed us to think about war veterans who marched longer distances with heavier rucksacks, ready to shed blood for their country.”
The Korean War was fought between the Republic of Korea, supported primarily by the U.S., and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, supported by the China and the Soviet Union. It began June 25, 1950, resulting in the division of peninsula that continues today. During the Korean War, the United States provided approximately 300,000 Soldiers to the effort.
The KATUSA program began in July 1950, during the Korean War, to support the alliance between the armed forces of the Republic of Korea and the United States, and the program still continues today. The KATUSA program provides the United States Army with Korean-speaking Soldiers who can speak fluent English, allowing greater military functionality and maneuverability throughout the Korean peninsula.
“This rucksack march was conducted to inherit the will of fallen patriots and pledge the punishment of enemy provocation,” said Major Lim, Dae Chon, ROKA Support Group Area III commander. “North Korea is still threatening the peace on the Korean peninsula with various provocations, and ROK Forces will continue to solidify the sense of national security and self-reliant defense potential.”

Rock band with roots in Southern California and Japan formed in 2012. The core of Lolita Dark is formed by singer/ songwriter / guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Rayko (Ray), Bassist Rain Balen, and Drummer Joey Felix who are also members of the Los Angeles rock band "Dig Jelly", and Okinawan vocalist and keyboardist Machiko (May), and guitarist Patrick Cabrera of prog metal band False Empire.

Lolita Dark has performed at various venues including Bar Sinister, House of Blues, J-Pop events hosted by "Tune in Tokyo", and Rayko's on going event “Tokyo Status” .Lolita Dark has also performed at Anime Expo, Nan Desu Kan, Anime Los Angeles, and Pacific Media Expo, where they opened for Japanese artists BACK-ON (Avex) and D (Avex, Universal Music). Lolita Dark was also invited by NAMM 2015 to host a panel to talk about their success in finding a niche in independent music market.
Lolita Dark is working on their third release while they perform as an opener to national acts from Japan, and headlines local clubs and anime convention circuits.

Lolita Dark's second album, “Queen's Decade”, was released in the spring of 2014 at their opening performance for Gacharic Spin (Universal Music) at Tekko 2014.

La parroquia del Sagrario Metropolitano o iglesia de la Soledad se ubica en las calles 2 sur, esquina con la calle 13 Poniente en la ciudad de Puebla. En siglos anteriores el templo se encontraba a un costado de la catedral., pero en el siglo XX, se trasladó la sede a la iglesia de la Soledad por disposición del Arzobispo y su Cabildo. Sobre la devoción a la Virgen de la Soledad sabemos que en el siglo XVII la promovió el mulato Manuel de los Dolores. La respuesta a esta devoción fue positiva. La construcción del templo se remonta a los primeros años del siglo XVI; primero fue una pequeña ermita, que marcaba el límite de la traza urbana. Después en 1631 la construcción del templo se terminó y fue consagrado. El crecimiento de la población obligo al sacerdote aumentar las dimensiones del templo. A mediado del siglo XVIII fue terminado el nuevo templo y dedicado una vez más a Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.
Sobre la primera iglesia del Sagrario se sabe que estuvo en el portal de Iturbide (Borja) posteriormente fue trasladada al templo de La Veracruz (Concordia) donde estuvo desde 1540 a 1648. Los límites de la parroquia eran los de la ciudad colindando con los barrios de Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Sebastián y Santiago por el norte y poniente. Por el oriente y sur el río de San Francisco, que la separaba de Analco. En 1538 se erigió la ermita a San Blas y luego se le agregó San Antonio y en 1698 el Ilmo. Sr. Fernández de Santacruz la hizo ayuda del Sagrario, permaneciendo así hasta 1769 fecha en la que fue erigida parroquia con el título de San Marcos y se constituyó ayuda del Sagrario a la capilla de Dolores. Posteriormente se agregaron como ayudas la Compañía y San Cristóbal. Para 1924, tenía en su jurisdicción 22 templos: La compañía, la Concepción, la Concordia, la Santísima Trinidad, San Roque, Santa Inés, los Gozos, Ntra. Sra. del Carmen, la Mansión, la Soledad, Capuchinas, San Juan de Letrán u Hospitalito y San Jerónimo.
El archivo del Sagrario se encuentra en la parte superior de la oficina parroquial, fue inventariado por Adabi. Los forman 711 libros que están depositados en anaqueles de madera los libros van de 1545 a 1999. 613 constituyen la sección sacramental y 98 la disciplinar. El libro más antiguo es el de Bautismo de españoles de 1545. Al archivo se anexa un acervo bibliográfico formado por 475 libros los más del siglo XX, ubicados en 7 cajas archivadoras. Al inventariarse se añadieron 262 libros duplicados de las parroquias de la ciudad. Sus polos cronológicos van de 1908 – 1983 y se hallan en 22 cajas.
Los registros sacramentales son de los más antiguos de la ciudad de Puebla, están por castas. Existen registros, por separado de los expósitos. Entre los libros de la sección disciplinar destacan: 2 libros de Capellanías 1765 – 1855, los cuales nos permiten conocer las fundaciones piadosas existentes y sus beneficiarios. Los cuatro registros de Canon 1768 – 1899 en los que se asientas los diferentes sacerdotes que sirvieron a la parroquia y las licencias ministeriales y de culto otorgadas a la parroquia. Uno de los registros más abundantes y completo es el de Cuentas de 1804 – 1996 con 33 libros y 1 legajo, que permiten reconstruir la vida económica y social de la parroquia. También los libros Gobierno, registran los mandatos emitidos por la diócesis y autoridades civiles de la época. Registran lo acontecido referente al el gobierno de la parroquia, y son tres libros que van de 1770 a 1928.
El primer libro de 1770 a 1866, ubicado en el armario (14/C/33), se encuentra en buen estado físico, forrado en piel, con aproximadamente 200 fojas sin foliar, contiene dos expedientes anexos referentes a Santa Inés Zacatelco de 1837. En él se asientan las circulares, providencias, edictos o mandatos emanados por el obispo de la diócesis y las autoridades civiles virreinales. Es notable uno de estos documentos en el que se registra una disposición del tenor siguiente: “Agregación de la Iglesia del Colegio del Espíritu Santo a el Sagrario, Carta del Exmo. Señor Virrey”. Fojas 105 f. a 109 V.
La copia de dicho documento se remite según, acuerdo celebrado por la Junta Superior de Aplicaciones celebrada del 2 al 9 de enero de 1790, en la que se dispone el destino del Templo y Colegio del Espíritu Santo de la Ciudad de Puebla, para que sea expuesto. Está Firmado en la ciudad de México el 7 de mayo por el Conde de Revillagigedo. En él se expone lo siguiente: Sobre los autos de aplicación de los Colegios del Espíritu Santo, San Gerónimo, San Ignacio y San Javier de Puebla, informado por el Ilmo. Sr. Obispo Don Santiago José de Echeverría el 16 de agosto de 1788. y expuesto por el Sr. Fiscal de la Real Hacienda, defensor de temporalidades al respeto el 23 de septiembre del 89. Señala además lo que se acordó para los Colegios: Que al colegio del Espíritu Santo, se reunan los de San Gerónimo y San Ygnacio, bajo el titulo o advocación del Colegio Carolino para que se cumpla allí (sin la distracción que necesariamente causaría en los alumnos de primero, la precisión de ocurrir diariamente a las aulas del Seminario Tridentino).con los específicos destinos de su fundación y erección que son los que se aplicaron por la Junta superior el 27 de mayo de 1771 y de 89. Por lo que a partir de este decreto quedaron unidos los colegios de San Jerónimo y San Ignacio al colegio del Espíritu Santo, con la obligación de que cada uno corra con sus gastos de traslado y que al rector del colegio Carolino, nombrado oportunamente por el Sr. Vicepatrono, le sean entregados, por el comisionado de temporalidades Don Joseph Pérez Platon, las rentas y pertenencias de los Colegios de San Ignacio y San Jerónimo.
Que en el mismo Colegio Carolino se admitan los indios hijos de caciques que acudan a el para su enseñanza o instrucción pero en calidad de pensionistas por no haber fondos con que dotar su manutención que respecto a que los [20 pesos] a que son principalmente obligados, los bienes del colegio de San Ildefonso que entregó el fundador el Ilmo. Señor Don Alonso de la Mota y Escobar impuestos al 5 por ciento sobre los propios de aquella ciudad están ya asignados para dotación de ocho cátedras establecidas en el de San Ygnacio, cuatro de ellas de Sagrada Teología, y las restantes de lógica, física, metafísica y Ruedas. Este informe debía ser notificado al propio comisionado de qué fincas les estaban impuestas dicho capital. Y de el dinero que debía aplicarse para dos dotaciones de cátedras que se establecerían para el Colegio Carolino una de Jurisprudencia Civil y otra de Cánones de la cual ha carecido San Ignacio con perjuicio a los alumnos. Por lo que se pide a la Junta superior que de inmediato quede formado el Real Patronato en el Colegio Carolino. En cuanto al templo del Colegio del Espíritu Santo, se ordena que sea abierta al culto público de los fieles, que la iglesia sea atendida por un cura del Sagrario con todas sus funciones propias del ministerio parroquial sin causar división del curato, variación o alteración alguna de su gobierno ni en la partición de emolumentos o derechos parroquiales por lo que deberá mantenerse sobre el mismo método que se lleva con la autoridad episcopal.
Que el cura más antiguo sirva en el Sagrario y el menor resida en el Colegio del Espíritu Santo asignándole habitación y la de sus ministros la parte conveniente, la que se destinaba para Amiga o Escuela de niños que cae en la calle de San Roque por donde el cura podrá tener entrada a su casa con separación del resto del Colegio con sus gastos a su cuenta. Dicha aplicación fue dirigida a los curas del Sagrario de la catedral los cuales acordaron cumplir con lo mandado el cura menor se quedo en la Iglesia del Colegio con sus anexos y el cura mayor en la capilla del Sagrario. Dicho acuerdo fue observado el día 22 de abril de 1790 y ejecutado el 7 de mayo de 1790.
Este documento, valioso por la información que ofrece nos conduce a precisar la forma en que el Colegio Carolino y la agregación y apertura al culto público de la Iglesia del colegio del Espíritu Santo. Datos importantes para la historia de la educación y de la Universidad de Puebla, así como para la historia de la Iglesia poblana.

Building our Cabin in the Ozarks: 1969 we bought 40 acres, adjacent to what is now Mark Twain Forest, in Crawford County, MO. Near streams that would be ideal for swimming fishing and canoeing. After the first winter and spring we began to build a new cabin. On weekends we would set a foundation footing or two and by the latter part of July 1970, we we ready for setting the flooring & sawing of frame gussets. My brother in law and his sons joined our six for the week end. At the end of the weekend, the joists, flooring and one rigid frame was up. For the next two VERY HOT AND SUNNY weeks,we rushed to build our cabin, close it in, and put on roof tar paper. (The tar paper blew off by the next week end of course. ) This is when we finished the roof.. Later we painted and stained the Cabin, brought in the electric and propane tanks.
For the next 14 years we used the cabin on week ends and vacations, as much for living green and close to the earth, as well as having time together with those we love, in a place we loved. WE called it "Turtle Run", as "Deer Run" would have been too easy. Located near Pucky Huddle, MO

Kentucky Tavern Straight Bourbon Whiskey, produced in Owensboro, Kentucky at Glenmore Distilleries since 1903, the distillery has gone through a number of owners over the years and is currently owned by The Sazerac Company, it is also made at the historic Tom Moore Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. This was my grandfather's Bourbon of choice, he simply called it "KT", this bottle was bought from J's Liquors on West Parrish Ave in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Uno de los principales edificios de la EXPO, concebido como la puerta principal de acceso a la misma. Diseñado por la arquitecta de origen iraquí, ganadora del Premio Pritzker de arquitectura, Zaha Hadid.
Su planta, horizontal, orgánica y trenzada, asemeja un gladiolo tendido sobre el río Ebro con una longitud de 270 m. Se diseña para alojar salas de exposición sobre la temática de la gestión sostenible del agua. Organizado en 4 secciones, lo que serían 4 vainas de la flor, se divide en dos niveles, comunicados por rampas destinándose a las zonas de paso alrededor de 3.100 m2 y el espacio expositivo en torno a los 2.700 m2 de superficie, tiene un recorrido audiovisual de 900 metros de longitud y 40 minutos de duración. La sección tiene forma de diamante, como forma racional de distribuir fuerzas a lo largo de la superficie. Esto genera un área de sección triangular bajo la planta principal para uso de almacenaje e instalaciones. Su autora lo define como un objeto que nace de las condiciones naturales del río y sus riberas.
El puente cuente con sólo dos apoyos secundarios en ambas orillas y uno principal en una mejana (isla natural en el cauce de un río), alcanzando su mayor luz ciento ochenta y cinco metros por lo que, junto con la inestabilidad de los suelos fluviales de Zaragoza, obligó a construir una cimentación record de profundidad por pilotaje en España (70 metros), aumentando costes y plazos de ejecución. El pabellón se construyó en tierra firme y una vez completado fue desplazado a su ubicación final sobre el cauce del Ebro. Esto significó mover una estructura de 140 metros y 2.200 toneladas, a lo largo de 123 m longitudinales y 9 laterales sin emplear ningún apoyo intermedio.
La estructura es metálica y de hormigón. La cubierta de plástico, en forma de escamas. La ventilación natural crea un microclima interior que evita las molestias del sol y del cierzo. Comienza con una pequeña sección en el barrio de La Almozara para ganar anchura conforme se acerca a la margen izquierda. La fachada inspirada en las escamas del tiburón, se genera por un patrón de tábulas solapadas y se conforma mediante bastidores metálicos con paneles triangulares de cristal y de grc (hormigón y fibra de vidrio) que le da una tonalidad irisada. En el diseño se presta especial atención al encuentro con las orillas realizándose mediante suaves rampas.
Finalizada la EXPO el pabellón se encuentra cerrado al público y sin uso, pese condición de puente peatonal para cruce del Ebro y sala de Exposiciones
