I must admit. I usually scan quickly through gatherings of house finches to hopefully find that different bird traveling with the group. It is a quick scan too! Having fed backyard birds most of my life. A house finch is a house finch. Same color males and same color females with very little changes from one to the next. Walking through Meadowbrook Park the other day with a very small window of time in between rainfall. I noticed some commotion with the group and shoot a few photos from the hip and continued walking to my truck. Later that evening I scrolled through the days photos and color caught my eye. A faded red which turned out to be a blood orange color and a goldish color on another. Kicking myself for letting my guard down and passing by the commotion without thinking about why I also admit. I never had seen or known about the Variant possibilities within house finches. May not be notable for a rarity for most birders. But for me, I'm almost forty years old and I have never seen any other color then reddish and/or brown. Then the best part of seeing one color variant is. Seeing Both at once! I posted the Orange the other day and now the yellow. Thankfully it stuck around for more observation by me. It was and is an eye opener and mind opener!

A Common Yellowthroat (Juvie Male) already has the hide in plain view tactic down. If the branches and leaves hadn't moved with each of his movements. I may have missed him. Glad I didn't. He had a nicely decorated viewing spot!

Grasshopper Sparrow
Second season and I've lucked out with the same location and this season brings a second sparrow that has been following this one. I would love to think this is the same bird from last year but I haven't been able to match this one to the last.

I noticed this walking across the street and leaping about a foot once or twice. Get out to get a closer look and for sure have not seen one of these before. Trying to get a few photos was difficult due to the scolding temperature of the street and the first dozen attempts were thwarted by this katydid turning to face me each time. Whoa! A wee bit aggressive I see! Snag a few shots and started to look into what this could be. The closest I've gotten to was a possible American Shieldback -Atlanticus americanus. Waiting on ID insight and as I read a little about these. They tend to be on the will bite if threatened chart....Also not too many seen that often around here.
