The smooth tarmac path stretches ahead, a pale grey ribbon winding between patches of rough grass. To either side, the ground rises slightly, dotted with the dark shapes of trees and bushes. The air smells faintly of damp earth and cut grass. But the path ahead is blocked. A bright red plastic barrier, angled across the tarmac, dominates the view. Its rough, ridged surface feels solid. A white circle with a red border is attached to the barrier, and a rectangular sign with raised lettering reads "ROUTE BARRÉE". You can trace the outlines of the letters with your fingertip. The barrier feels substantial, effectively preventing passage along the path. The scene evokes a sense of interruption, of a journey halted by unexpected roadworks.
