The South Carolina National Guard hosted a visit for students from the Colombian War College to various functions of the South Carolina Military Department as part of the U.S. National Guard's State Partnership Program (SPP), 6-11 Sept., 2015. These students are the future senior leaders of the Colombian Army and the cultural and military exchange facilitated by this SPP engagement is expected to further strengthen and develop this multinational initiative. The relationship between South Carolina and Colombia was formally forged in 2012 when South Carolina Gov. Each fall, Recipe for Success Foundation hosts the My Favorite Holiday Food Writing Contest, in which fourth graders from all over Houston submit essays about their family holiday food traditions. The lucky overall winner is honored at our annual Blue Plate Special Cafe Awards Luncheon in November before experiencing their prize: Chef for a Day in the kitchen with the Houstonian's executive chef, Neal Cox.

 

On January 25, 2014, this year's contest winner, Ivan Marquez from Matthys Elementary, spent a day touring the sprawling hotel kitchens and working with Chef Cox and his team to prepare a three-course meal for his family and educators.

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs hosted a major Veteran Career Fair in Washington, D.C., where federal agencies and private sector companies partnered to hire Veterans on the spot. The Veteran-focused career fair and exposition was attended by thousands of Veterans competing for approximately 6,400 public and private sector job opportunities. Federal agencies included Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and EPA. Over 20 private sector partners included Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Citigroup, Safeway, Washington Area Transit Authority, Philadelphia Police Dept, Johns Hopkins Hospital, JP Morgan and many others.

 

"Ensuring that Veterans are educated, trained and able to translate their military skills into careers in both the public and private sector continues to be a top priority for the Obama Administration," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. VILSECK, Germany - U.S. Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria (BMEDDAC) Soldiers hosted the 2016 Vilseck-Grafenwoehr Native American Indian Heritage Month Ceremony at the Rose Barracks Multi-purpose center Nov. 22. The event Guest Speaker was Ms. Barbara Wilson, a member of the Inupiat tribe whose native lands are located above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, explained the customs and traditions of her people, accompanied by a colorful slide show of photos. An original poem in honor of Native Americans was read by the author, Christian Wilder, a 5th grade student of the Vilseck Elementary School as well during the course of the one hour ceremony. Opening and closing the event was BMEDDAC Col. Andrew Powell, who presented the organizers and special guests with certificates in thanks and recognition of their support.

National Native American Heritage Month begins Nov. 1 each year to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of this country's original inhabitants, explorers and settlers. Throughout the Army's history, Native Americans have served valiantly and with distinction in times of peace and war, while also fighting for the right to be an equal part of the nation. We recognize their rich heritage and honor their spirit and true devotion to this land. This year's theme is "Serving Our Nations."

Throughout the U.S. Army's 240-year history, Native Americans have served and contributed with distinction and honor in times of peace and war.
