Tiny size 11 and size 15 beads run around the edge of silver plated hoops in a geometric pattern. Each bead was woven in by hand using an off loom technique called brick stitch. The brass hoops for this pair of earrings was hand formed and finished off with a bit of wire wrapping as well.

'Libnaniya we shisha // Lebanese Woman Smoking the Hookah' On Black
One of a group of young women smoking the hookah at the Arab American Street Fair, which was held in NYC's East Village on July 8th. She posed for me by making a huge puff of smoke...

This was taken on July 8, 2006, four days before the Israeli invasion, when Lebanese in the USA (as everywhere) were still in a relatively lighthearted mood, which is no longer the case. I thought that I couldn't NOT make a comment regarding the current destruction of Southern Lebanon, and of Beirut itself--and beyond. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have family and friends there... May this senseless & cruel violence end soon!

These are a prototype for a kinetic hoop earring that I am working on. These are finished but I am not completely satisfied with them and will probably make some alterations. I like the look okay but it is a bit too industrial and seems clunky. Inside the sterling silver frame is a tiny brass bearing that is able to move about freely. There is even a bit of noise as it does this.
These measure approximately 5/8" in diameter.
Hand formed brass ovals have been embellished with a geometric beaded pattern. I then added a faceted picasso bead in the middle for a pop of shine and color.

These started an an exercise in making the domed hoop forms that comprise the body of the earrings. Thank you to our friend, fellow artisan and teacher Melinda Alexander for setting us on this path.
