Kayla Loyd, a graduate student from Vienna studying workforce education, and Grant Bredar, a junior from Salem studying information systems technology, work on their homework Friday at a Mediascape table on the seventh floor of Morris Library. The Mediascape tables, which are part of the $5.4 million renovation completed Jan. 27, allow students to connect their phones, laptops, or tablets to a large television monitor. Each week, Amailah picks one book we've read and writes in her homework journal about it. For October, the assignment was to write about your favorite part of one of your books. Kids do this at different levels -- some dictate and the parents write, for example. Amailah likes to write her own and is getting very good at ear-spelling and even regularly gets in some book-spelling of some sight-words (words that aren't spelled phonetically). A parent then writes out the translation at the bottom of the page and Amailah draws some art in the middle.

The picture is of Heather Mitts & Heather O'Reilly (of the US Soccer Women's National Team) taken during the July 3, 2004 US vs Canada game (in Nashville, Tenn.) Since the one goal of the game was made by Mitts, that's when I'll guess the photo was taken.
