After seeing Rika and WL off at Golden Mile, ER suggested to have our buffet dim sum breakfast at Chinatown. To our surprise, the restaurant schedule has changed and the buffet will only start at 11 AM. Anyway, we went for our 2nd choice and ate at a traditional shop at Smith Street.
Since we were at Chinatown, we walked on foot to various places and took some snapshots with the festive moods in. However, the festive decorations were still in progress. So, hopefully, we will be back one evening to take in the night scenes.
For the coming Chinese New Year, ER and I planned to make in advance some “Fu Chow” meatballs wrap in “yan pi”. We got these special dry wrappings from “Yue Hwa”, where we found lots of products made in China. It was from here that we bought the potherb mustard/xue cai after a strong recommendation from a Chinese middle age lady. She came from Guangdong and currently staying in Sengkang, a residential estate in Singapore.
I think you could guess that this particular fried rice was learnt from her :) I was told pickled potherb mustard from Ningbo, China, is the best! This particular brand of “xue cai” in vacuum packaging is consumable after opening. It is crunchy and goes well with plain rice and porridge as a side dish.

Although ER’s father had never handed down the recipe to him, he tried to make Foochow dumplings anyway. With the packet of yanpi bought from Yue Hwa, he made them here for the first time after moving to Punggol 21.
We bought the ingredients days before New Year’s Eve, but was too busy to make them in advance. Today, Chinese New Year’s Eve, with words from him, I helped to prepared and seasoned the filling. While I was busy with getting lunch ready, he did the wrapping and the dumplings were in all shapes and different sizes :) No complains, we only chuckled at the sight including him! The good thing about yanpi is that the finished dumplings were placed on top of each other without the problem of sticking! Steaming, they were placed in an oil plate and steamed in batches in single layer. We like the tasty dumplings although my father-in-law’s dumplings were second to none!

Yoghurt with honey was first tasted during our breakfast at one of the Café in Meteora, Greece.
Meteora means "suspended in air". A good glimpse of the history on Meteora monastries can be found in this web site www.great-adventures.com/destinations/greece/meteora.html
My friends and I stayed in Glyfada during our 7 weeks business trip in Greece. Every weekend, we would spend our time visiting places in Athens, Delphi, Corinth, Meteora, Mykonos.
My fond memories were on the food we savoured, some of them that I could recall were souvlaki, moussaka, tzatziki, fried calamari, rabbit stew, pita bread "Gyros", feta cheese, Greek pizzas, olives, Greek salads, Ouzo, nougat pies (only know that yesterday, while looking at Greek recipes & Flickers photos about Greece). - ER

Besides garlic and leek, we love to eat leek flowers as well. They taste best if the thin membrane of each stalk is removed before use. Generally dried mushrooms are soaked in hot water for half and hour before use.
My version:
Recipe:
Mushroom Stir-fried With Leek Flowers
Ingredients:
400 g leek flowers - peeled and cut
10 dried mushrooms - soaked and sliced
100 g minced pork
3 cloves garlic - chopped
3 tbsp oyster sauce
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt, sugar and ajinomoto to taste
1. Peeled all the stalks of leek flowers for better crunch and flavour, wash and set aside.
2. Soak the dried mushrooms in hot water till soft, remove the stalks and slice the mushroom caps.
3. Season mince pork with 2 tsp of soy sauce, pinch of sugar and a little cornflour.
4. Heat up olive oil in a fry pan, fry the chopped garlic till fragrant, add in minced meat and stir-fry till just cooked.
5. Add in the leek flowers, oyster sauce and seasonings. Stir-fry till the leek flowers are just done and yet still crunchy. If it gets too dry, add in a tablespoon of water during stir-frying.

I am always amazed at the unwavering popularity of deviled eggs. While you may consider them old fashioned they are always one of the first things to disappear at a party, potluck, or picnic. Deviled Eggs are wholesome and delicious. storify.com/catalinkava/healthy-homestyle-delicious-devil...
These people were dancing to the tune of lively country and western music right in front of Hougang Mall...whether to the youth or elderly, this is a good way to relax and exercise.
This is where you can find some traditional kind of Beijing foods. In the old days of 1990s, ordinary people will take their kids here for some "eat outside" experiences.

Ingredients of prawn paste for fried chicken as listed on the bottle: shrimp paste, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, spices, fermented beancurds [lam yee], cooking wine.
An occasional treat of streaky pork, I consciously avoid this cut because it has too much of unhealthy fat, braised with shoulder butt I normally used in this favourite dish. When the meat is ready, the layer of skin and the fat under it are so tender and tasty...it certainly minus the feel that they are the fatty and oily stuff! This dish goes well with plain rice, plain porridge and Chinese steamed plain buns call "man tou".
This is a hand-me-down recipe; I meant I have learnt it by watching my mother cooked it while helping out in my maternal home kitchen.
Stewed cuttlefish pork was one of the signature dishes my mum cooked during Chinese festivals. In the olden days, my mother used to make her own sweet glutinous rice wine known as yellow wine to go with this dish. To those who like cuttlefish, the pungent aroma it exudes during the cooking process is alluring and surely would induce one's appetite! And the sauce is really tasty with the addition of 'Hua Tiao Chiew', a type of cooking wine, which I have used in this dish.
Regrettably while two of my younger sisters have inherited the skill of making Hakka yellow wine, I have not. Still all is not lost, I am happy that I am able to produce a few Hakka dishes like the ginger wine chicken, black vinegar trotter, fishballs and fishcakes, niang doufu, mei cai men rou, braised pork etc. And of course my mum's delicious, nutritious "Dang gui Dom double-boiled chicken soup"...not sure if it is a Hakka soup though.

[Hougang Mall is at the background.] Hougang Mall is where we shopped for groceries and essentials from July 2003 to the third quarter of 2004 before the mall, Punggol Plaza which houses about 60 shops, a bank, a 24-stall wet/fresh market and a supermarket on the 3rd floor, is opened for business.
This building was constructed in 1930 I was told it began life as a hamburger stand then later it became Polar Bear Ice Cream, after it closed it was later purchased by a local hispanic restauranteer. who named it Casita Ludi. But In 2014 The owner shut the down the business. In 2015 the Oak cliff Chamber of Commerce listed the building as endangered Not long after it went vacant. On November 15, 2015 The Oak Cliff Advocate reported strong thunderstorms raced through oak cliff caused significant damage to the building. This photo above was taken on Nov 19, 2015 , showing the extensive damage to the wood plaster crown that was on top of the structure. when the crown come of the top it damaged the sign and the two center pillars of the structure. a series of cables also helped hold the top in place broke free and it fell hitting the ground. The wood at The base had also rotted. When the sign hit the building. It hit with such force that It caused large cracks In the plaster they were easily visible on both sides the right and left side of the structure. With the damage to the building it is not known whether it can still be saved or not. Currently the building is owned by Firebrand restaurants, who also owns the El Fenix Restaurants The construction of the building is comprised mainly of wood and plaster .Stay tuned for updates .

After much waiting, tenggiri fish was finally available from the wet market this Saturday. Weighing slightly more than a kilogram each, I had wanted to buy two but, ER said, “One whole fish is sufficient.” That amount would be used up for a pot of fishball soup as shown here. Yes, I should have bought two…simply because fish paste is so versatile in making different foods and we certainly enjoy fishballs.
