The Silicon Valley Chapter and the community of San Jose came together to install smoke alarms at the Golden Wheel Park after a tragic fire killed a grandfather and two children the previous month. Partnering with the Red Cross were the City of San Jose, SJFD, Team Rubicon and other community groups. Seventy-five volunteers installed 250 smoke alarms in 83 homes ensuring that more families were better prepared.

In San Bruno, CA on Saturday April 28, 2018, the Red Cross kicked off its "Sound the Alarm" campaign, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Together with the San Bruno Fire Department, the Red Cross offered and installed free smoke alarms, replaced batteries in existing alarms, and provided fire prevention and safety education.

Red Cross volunteers, staff, and local Seaside High School students, along with the support of the North County Fire District of Monterey County Fire Department, came together on a bright, sunny Saturday to Sound the Alarm. After a briefing by the Fire Department, DPM Patsy Gasca, and remarks by Monterey County Supervisor Phillips, the teams spread out into the neighborhood to install free smoke alarms. By the end of the event, 57 area homes had been made safer from home fires.

Red Crossers and the Richmond Fire Department worked together to provide the local community with free smoke alarms and home fire safety information on Saturday, May 7 in Richmond, Calif. Together with the Richmond Fire Department, the team made 42 homes and 151 residents safer installing 149 free smoke alarms.

“I dealt with people who have been through fires or floods in their homes and these fires are really fast. With a plan in hand already, everyone gets out safely and nothing really bad happens, besides the property being damaged, and that’s always replaceable,” says German, who used to work at a restoration company where he talked to many people whose homes had been damaged by fires.
German was happy to receive a visit from the American Red Cross in Santa Clara on May 21 as part of the Sound the Alarm program. He now feels his family is better prepared after the Red Cross installed free smoke alarms and discussed a home fire escape plan. “If everyone has a plan on how to escape and meet up that will definitely help us,” he says.

“My stepdad has been a Fireman for 27 years so we have always talked about fire preparedness, prevention and escape plans and what to do in case of emergencies. It’s definitely been drilled into me from a young age how important these things are,” says Megan, a volunteer for the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm program. Megan and nearly 100 other volunteers installed free smoke alarms in homes in Santa Clara on May 21.

Red Crossers and the Richmond Fire Department worked together to provide the local community with free smoke alarms and home fire safety information on Saturday, May 7 in Richmond, Calif. Together with the Richmond Fire Department, the team made 42 homes and 151 residents safer installing 149 free smoke alarms.
The Oakland Fire Department coordinated with the Alameda County Red Cross to install smoke alarms in the Fruitvale neighborhood around the Unity Council Center. Forty-one homes were made safer with the installation of 166 smoke alarms. Our Salvation Army partner was also at the event providing meals and support.
