Every day 7 people die in home fires and most die in homes without working smoke alarms. The American Red Cross working with volunteer participants, fire departments and other local agencies are canvassing at-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms. The Felton Fire Department collaborated with the American Red Cross Central Coast Chapter and hosted a “Sound the Alarm” Campaign on August 24, 2019.

The day after Valentine's Day, 65 Red Crossers converged at the El Dorado Mobile Home Park in Sunnyvale, where - along with the Sunnyvale Fire Department - they installed 322 free smoke alarms. Their efforts made 280 residents living in 98 homes safer from home fires.

Working to prevent home fires, we were in a Moss Beach community installing smoke alarms and providing home fire preparedness training.

Red Crossers and the Richmond Fire Department worked together to provide the local community with free smoke alarms and home fire safety information on Saturday, May 7 in Richmond, Calif. Together with the Richmond Fire Department, the team made 42 homes and 151 residents safer installing 149 free smoke alarms.
The Red Cross visited a neighborhood in Suisun City in Solano County to install free smoke alarms in homes. Everyone took COVID-19 precautions and wore masks. After a long hiatus visiting homes personally to install alarms due to the pandemic, the Red Cross is happy to have the opportunity to return to vulnerable neighborhoods when possible to continue this important lifesaving program. In San Bruno, CA on Saturday April 28, 2018, the Red Cross kicked off its "Sound the Alarm" campaign, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Together with the San Bruno Fire Department, the Red Cross offered and installed free smoke alarms, replaced batteries in existing alarms, and provided fire prevention and safety education.

Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders (LAPR) Presentation to Holly and Alex Bateman: The American Red Cross Lifesaving Awards program originally conceived as one award in 1911 has since evolved into three awards. The Certificate of Merit, The Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders, and The Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action all of which recognize an individual or team of individuals who saved or sustained a life using skills learned in a Red Cross Training class.Alex and Holly Bateman were driving down a street and saw flames coming from the roof of a home. They stopped, dialed 9-1-1 and knocked on the door but did not enter, to alert the family, who was unaware their home was a blaze. They kept the family calm and near the curb as they were in shock their home was now in flames. EMS/Fire Dept arrived and took over providing care to the family and went to put to the flames out.
The Batemans were awarded the Extraordinary Personal Action award at the Humboldt Bay Fire Station in Eureka.

Red Cross staff and volunteers gathered in Santa Cruz on Saturday, 9/28/19 to install free smoke alarms in the Voyage West and De Anza Senior Community mobile home neighborhoods. The team was welcomed by Regional CEO Jennifer Adrio, Central Coast Executifve Director Michele Averill, Disaster Program Manager Patsy Gasca, and Fire Prevention Division Chief Rob Oatey. Together they expressed their appreciation for the volunteers time and encouraged the teams about the significance of this life saving gift of smoke alarms. Rob Oatey reminded the team members about a DAT call, not too long ago, where teams supported clients displaced by a motel fite. At the most recent incident, every person was safe because the sound of the alarms which woke them up. By the end of the day, a total of 115 new smoke alarms were installed in 54 homes.

Humboldt/Del Norte Red Cross Volunteers banded together for a full day of smoke alarm installations in Crescent City. The 13 volunteers formed teams of 2 and installed 144 alarms in Apartment complexes and homes including one RV. They trained clients on the many aspects of emergency preparedness with the focus on home fires, earthquakes and tsunamis.
