Carving this particular work was very tedious. Moreso, the planning and arrangement of the figures, rocks and landscape. I had to develop a method of approach relative to the rocks/ stones. Some, I Dremel-carved; and others were hand-carved in pine wood.
The painting part of this process was equally challenging, as I had to view several publications to get the right shading effect of the rocks during the hour of this event -so that no matter how this piece is shown, the effect of lighting wouldn't hide the color balance...whether in shade or open light.
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.” Therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden.

The Begining:
This wood sculpture is the hallmark as well as the beginning of all the wood-sculpted images seen in this photostream.
It started one summer night, after reading the Bible, that I viewed a small piece of wood sitting at the end of my work table. As I glared at it an audible voice said: "Rex!" In my fear, I hastened out of the room -a man who travelled the Albany streets at night.
After getting my bearings, I later went back in and retrieved the wood and the voice continued "you will carve My image and I will show you what to do."
To my amazement and awe, never having the ability to carve, I began. Finally, after the image was finished I waited several months to 'hear' further instructions. It finally came at the exact time, that February of 1996. I read the Gospel of Matthew 8:24-27 and, upon reading it, was led to outline this dynamic layout that soon would awe State Troopers at the New York Capital that summer and those further south in New York City at South Street Seaport -including a Channel One news crew.
The way the scene was coming together was mind-boggling. I tried not to embrace the subject matter and made every attempt to ignore it with my own reasoning and understanding. But the more I tried to fight the compelling force behind it, the more frustrated I became. Finally I yielded and produced my first wood-sculpted diorama.
I finally realized that not only was the gift given to me to do extraordinary works which I, myself, could not fathom -but it was also a message for me (and for believers) to not doubt or lose faith in one's calling. That, like the oarsman guiding the ship in the storm, the Lord is here to guide us through our storms -bringing our ships to port.
"Sacrifice to Me every firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me."

The painted figure shows Magdelene in a distraught position. To get the right effect of her being at the place of cruxifiction I had to study various scenes of women whom lost loved ones to be able to grasp the moment. It is certain that she was a beautiful woman whom was subjected to an adulterous lifestyle. So to illustrate 'the woman' I had to make a judgement call relative to her figure.
There is no question, based upon the Four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John that she was envied -especially when she washed The Lord's feet with her hair. This, alone, designates her beauty and her converting to discipleship.
"The Mark At Calvary" is a work that's seven years in production. It's carved entirely out of wood. A work that clearly, biblically and historically documents the cruxifiction of Jesus the Christ.
Images of this photostream will be randomly uploaded from now until Easter 2012-13 to show the diorama in its entirety and the amazing detail that my hands have been annointed to produce. There's so much to see in this work and it's difficult to explain in a 'few' photos. However, I ask that you, the viewer, follow this and see it materialize.
In the above photo is a handcarved image produced in pine of the woman faithful to Jesus, Mary Magdalene. From accounts of her near-stoning to her visitation (after the Sabbath) to Our Lord's tomb, this work was carefully researched with sketches (to scale) before the actual carving began.
From facial expression to body positioning, this figure took an entire day to carve.
The scale drawing to the left shows my approach to the wood medium.
Similiar to my ship models, changes are made as the work progresses; but the basics are there which keeps the image uniform and whole. The Centurion is positioned as if standing on a rock or broken clay vessel. I chose to keep the latter because it was more evident to see these objects at the cruxifiction site.

This wood creation is 50% percent finished. Much research is needed for the remaining images to make this latest work reality. It is my hope, finances pending, that I can realize this by 2013.

Here in this scene, the waves are visibly seen -powerful enough to bring the ship under. The oarsman and crew, aside from Jesus the Christ, are the only ones to not panic during this crisis.
The Disciples, the ones Jesus disciplined, are strewn about the deck -yielding to the circumstances of the storm. They are going opposite His teachings.
How often do we yield to the circumstances of our lives. My 40 year journey in the maritime has had devastating consequences -even homelessness for what I'm doing in the midst of the storms.
But I've learned that I can survive and produce outstanding work inspite of the storms.

Here, I glue the last shroud in place before placing the vessel in a wood-carved sea. The facial expressions that were on each carved figure caught my attention from beginning to end.
As I built the shipmodel (Greek origin), it was difficult to resist viewing the images. There were hidden messages behind each expression which, at times, distracted me as I rigged the vessel.
